I saw this posted on JI that he is the 6th ranked OG on PFF. Raise your hand if you were one of the many that wanted him gone and/or replaced with Warmack/Cooper or God forbid Peterman; my hands are comfortably down. I have a funny feeling that Ducasse might be in a similar position next year with a different team. Anyway Slauson only signed a 1 year deal with Chicago; maybe we bring him back. Talk about buying high. LOL.
I was gonna mention this too. He is having a good year, I thought he was the weak link last year. It's difficult to grade OL play year to year, evidently. Letting him go looks bad right now.
I was in favor of keeping him. He was injured and played next to an injured Mangold. He would have been good for us this year. For a 6th rounder he was a decent player for us. I think Winters will be an upgrade in time but immediately he should have been starting for us. Ducass should have been kicked to the curb.
I don't know that keeping Slauson was an option. He may have been disgruntled by the playing time split forced down by "higher ups".
I wanted to keep Slauson and bring in Warmack. RG was a big issue for us last year. Slauson was average but an everyday guy and had chemistry. This year he is playing better for sure in Chi
Ftr I did not want to see him go, but I understood how Tanny had cut his contract the year before, so Slauson was probably as they used to say ill-disposed to the Jets. Idzik still might have had a chance to keep him, but I do not recall hearing about any real effort having been made to do that.
that was such a fucking woody johnson, mike tannenbaum debacle... oh man that shit still frustrates me. i must say i am so glad that there isnt any of that type of shit going on right now.
i thought Slauson was very stiff, and was routinely getting beat on pass protection because of it when here. but he was pretty tough in run blocking, and getting a little better every year though. with the limited Chicago snaps i've seen, he's the same player, but has taken a nice step in the right progress direction. ironically enough, that's exactly what i'm seeing with Winters as well. Winters is converting from Tackle, and showing a lot of growing pains in the process, especially in pass pro. I think he'll improve, but drafting a OG in the first 3 rounds is imperative. I'd also re-sign Colon (or a better FA option if available), and let all 3 compete for the 2 starting spots, with the other as backup.
Slausson like Moore was begging to come back. He took the vet min to go to Chicago. Not resigning Slausson made no sense. I understand not resigning Moore as he would have cost more dollars as Moore was ranked the 4th best guard in football last year by PFF. Either way we are paying for the loss of both this year.
No doubt we should have kept him. You don't get rid of your veteran OLs who (unlike Vlad) can play and be starters. He's a lot better than Idzik's draft pick Winters. He has a history I think with Bill Callahan so there is a chance if Bill is still at Dallas he could sign there. I don't think his ties were really with Rex (who is on offense anyways) and who knows who'll be the head coach of the Jets anyways in 2014.
Hence one of the reasons why our O-Line was a lot better last year then it is this year. Slauson was not this good for us, but he was pretty solid. We've replaced him and Moore with an average player in Colon and Brian Winters who has been utter garbage.
I don't know if it's true or not, but I read somewhere on the web (so it must be true, right? ;-) ) that the Jets wanted to bring Slauson back, but the Bears offered more than the Jets were willing to pay.
Who knows for sure? Slauson is young and could have upped his game (especially with better coaching).
