If he plays like he did in 07 he's better than all of those guys. All I'm saying is the coaches and talent evaluators should take a look. If they think he's the 09 Merrimen with 4 sacks or if they aren't sure which Merrimen they would get then your 100% right why bother but if they see something in him and think he can get back to his old form then he can help any team in the league.
Jason Taylor has a bionic arm and Pace is coming back from a broken foot and limping this week. It can't hurt to have another guy for depth. Whether he wants to take on a backup role will likely depend on his priorities (money, location, championship, starter, ...) and opportunities available in the middle of the season.
Westerman is also still beat up. Only downside is Merriman not filling a ST spot, but we've managed without Westerman on Teams.
Theres going to be several weeks before Merriman plays again. If Thomas/Pace/Taylor get hurt/banged up id instantly expect the jets to be the front runner to get him (maybe not so much thomas), if theyre all healthy id consider it more than a long shot. Still though, the Jets grabbed two discarded chargers already and both ended up being absolute fucking grand slam moves for the organization . Makes me really hope we get Merriman with hopes that well be going 3 for 3. Having those guys on our team will be the closest the chargers come to a superbowl anytime soon
He won't be released this week but sometime in the next six weeks... By then chances are the Jets have a major injury or a player that has fallen out of favor with the coaches. There will be someone to cut, and Merriman is worth the gamble if Adalius Thomas was in serious consideration.
GeigerGeiger geiger has spoken btw. ESPN made a good point that Shawn will NOT be let go until after the Patriots game.
I don't think Merriman really has anything left in him. Recall a couple of years ago he was told that playing with a knee injury he suffered was "the world's dumbest idea" and that it would threaten his career. Instead of waiting, prudently, he rushed out there, aggravated the injury, and hasn't been the same since. That and the juice. There's a chance he's completely washed. -X-
Taylor backing up Thomas and Merriman backing up Pace. It's not like we're loaded with OLB depth. I say bring him in.
westerman is the 4th OLB right now but he plays any position. lance laury and kenwin cummings are the back-up ILBs so if we grab merriman we can cut cummings and slide westerman back inside. cummings has barely played. matter of fact in his 2.25 season with the jets has not recorded even a tackle.
He's a special teams blocker. i'd rather have merriman. just saying. its an uncapped year. we can give him a 1 year deal and put cummings back on the practice squad. Remember were making a SB run. if he can add a pass rush even for the last 6 games and the playoffs its worth it. plus if he can play well in 1 defense it would be a rex ryan defense. and merriman knows he'd be playing for a big contract in the offseason so there is motivation. also by signing him then letting him walk we get a comp pick probably a 4th or 3rd rounder. that means we can get comp picks from cromartie (3rd rounder) Holmes or BE (3rd rounder) Merriman (3rd or 4th rounder) Thats 3 extra picks all possible 3rd rounders we can use to get some quality depth at o-line, LBer, and CB
