Former Mets and Royals pitcher Ambiorix Burgos will spend nine months in jail after beating his girlfriend in a hotel near Shea Stadium last September.
Burgos punched, slapped, and stepped on his then-girlfriend and reportedly boasted "The police won't won't do anything to me. I am a baseball player." Well, he was a baseball player, but those days are gone.

New York Mets designate Marlon Anderson for assignment

The Mets designated outfielder Marlon Anderson for assignment Saturday, clearing roon on their 25-man roster for pitcher Livan Hernandez, who will make his first start Saturday night against the Florida Marlins.

If Anderson, 35, clears waivers, he can either accept a minor-league assignment or become a free agent. He went 0-for-4 in the Mets' first four games this season.

Johan Alexander Santana Jr. was born at 5:51 a.m. Tuesday in Fort Myers, Fla. The firstborn son of the Mets ace weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces. Johan Santana Sr. skipped Citi Field's debut to be with his wife, Yasmile Garcia, when she gave birth. It's the couple's third child. Santana Sr., who lost 2-1 to Florida's Josh Johnson on Sunday at Dolphin Stadium when a dropped ball by Daniel Murphy resulted in two unearned runs, is next scheduled to pitch Saturday against Milwaukee righthander Jeff Suppan.

Billy Wagner wows in Met workout

Billy Wagner took a big step toward returning from major arm surgery Tuesday, but the lefthander declined to talk about his seven-month recovery.

Wagner, the Mets reliever who has been supplanted by big-ticket free agent Francisco Rodriguez as closer this season, threw 23 pitches in a rehab outing at Tradition Field. Following the workout, he did not make himself available to the media.

"We're just observing where he's at," said Guy Conti, rehabilitation pitching coordinator for the Mets, following the 36-minute session. "This is a very long process.

"It's a matter of us putting our eyes on him. I haven't seen him since the end of last season. He's in tremendous shape, as you can tell."

Wagner warmed up with some long-toss and 10pitches in the outfield on Field 7, then had a bandage placed on his left thumb before moving over to the bullpen behind the stands at the spring training complex. He fired 23 pitches from the bullpen mound, with a couple bouncing in on his battery-mate, Gulf Coast League catcher Juan Centeno.

NEW YORK -- During Saturday afternoon's postgame press conference, Mets ace Johan Santana took a break from discussing his seven scoreless innings when he was asked about teammate and friend Luis Castillo.

"He is a man of war," Santana said.

And if the start of 2009 is any indication, Castillo is not only in battle shape, he's slowly winning over once-hostile ground.

"I'm feeling like a new man," Castillo said. "I'm feeling like I can play."

As of Monday, Castillo was hitting .389 -- tops among Mets with at least 10 at-bats -- including two doubles and four RBIs.

Arguably the fact that Castillo has appeared in 11 of the Mets' first 12 games is evidence enough of the infielder's turnaround.

In an abysmal 2008, Castillo was hurt, underperformed and eventually lost his starting job, becoming a source of fans' frustration. Plagued with sore knees and an injury to his left hip flexor, Castillo hit .245 in 87 games, with just 11 extra-base hits. It was the worst average for the three-time National League All-Star since 1998, when he was just 22.

At times, manager Jerry Manuel was hesitant to play Castillo because of the harsh treatment at Shea Stadium.

"We knew if we had to get anybody off to a good start, it would be have to be Luis," Manuel said. "And we made a concerted effort to do that, starting Day 1 of Spring Training."

For Castillo, the opportunity to revive his career started months before that.

Upon returning to the Dominican Republic in the offseason, Castillo would drive two hours to his workout complex daily, where a combination of conditioning, strength training and rehab lasted another four hours. The rigorous routine had Castillo out the door at 7 a.m. and not returning until late afternoon.

The results were noticeable: Castillo arrived to camp 17 pounds lighter and said he hasn't been this svelte since 2003.

"This year, I will be a different me," Castillo said. "I want to show the fans, I want to show my teammates, I'm a different guy."

That guy has been a key contributor so far.

Castillo went 4-for-4 with three runs scored in April 11's win at Florida, and collected the Mets' first RBI in Citi Field history with a run-scoring double on April 13.

But it was his starring role in Friday night's thrilling 5-4 win over the Brewers that solidified Castillo's new hero status. With two outs in the ninth, in front of a crowd of 36,436 at Citi Field, Castillo delivered a walk-off single that put the finishing touches on an already memorable New York night.

"When [teammate Gary] Sheffield got 500 home runs, I wanted to win," Castillo said. "I don't want to think about last year's [problems at the plate]. You know, when I see that situation, that's what I want."

After going 2-for-5 with two RBIs on Friday, Castillo followed with a two-hit game Saturday. And the home-crowd jeers that once haunted him have been replaced with resounding applause.

"I feel great," Castillo said. "And in that moment [Friday night], I felt good because I want to change everything. I want to turn it around and get past last year."

While Castillo declines to delve into the details of last season's frustration, Manuel admits that winning back the home crowd was a major goal coming out of Spring Training.

"That was the biggest key," Manuel said. "We had to get some folks on our side, get on his side. That's just part of it. And he was able to that."

With the fans behind him, Manuel believes Castillo has not only shed unnecessary weight but is free of the stress and ridicule he shouldered last season.

"He seems to just be a lighter person, not just physically but emotionally," Manuel said. "And when you play that way and you have talent, it gives you the freedom to let that talent flow. And I think that's what's happening right now."

Given a second chance, the second baseman is showing the Mets exactly what they envisioned when they signed Castillo to a four-year, $25-million contract prior to 2008.

"It's good to see him -- after all the things that he went through last year, all the media criticism that he had -- now performing the way he is," Santana said.

"Him being healthy is a plus for us, and I'm very happy for him. He's going to be a key player in our lineup, and he's showing it already."

For the fans that are still skeptical, Castillo has a similar message.

"I feel different. I can run, I can have better movement," he said. "I worked so hard, and that's because I want to be ready for this season.

"The type of year I had last year I don't want to have anymore."

Can anyone tell me why the mets made such a big deal about having standing room tickets avalible...i remember them saying the stadium holds 42,000 but its 45,000 with standing room. Yet, they dont actually sell standing room tickets at Citi Field.

Yankees did the same thing.

The wide concourses and open-air build of new ballparks makes them extremely conducive to standing and watching the game from public areas, instead of having seats. There are plans for standing room only tickets at both the new Yankee Stadium, and Citi Field, but sales of these tickets have been put on hold indefinitely.

In Queens, the Mets set expectations low right off the bat, announcing that internal evaluations of Citi Field would take place before any standing room tickets would be sold. In the Bronx, there have been mixed messages from the start. The calendar is now in the month of May and according to our source in the ticket office, "[there is] still no word on the SRO tickets...my guess is we won't be selling them anytime soon."

Both teams are stuck between a rock and a hard place. If they put the standing room tickets on sale immediately, they are giving fans another reason not to splurge on the still-overpriced premium ticket offerings. The Yankees have become so desperate to sell these seats that they have slashed ticket prices and have even enlisted the help of Yankees legend David Cone, who is cold-calling prospective ticket buyers. From a business standpoint, this would be a bad time to put standing room only tickets on the already crashing market.

On the other hand, delaying the sale of standing room only tickets may generate more bad PR for the new stadiums - the last thing that the Yankees and Mets need . Fans who have been looking forward to purchasing affordable tickets directly from their team's respective ticket office may feel that they are left out in the cold because the teams are unable to move their overpriced ticket options.

When reached for comment, Yankee spokeswoman Alice McGillion said "we have always said that we would not sell standing room tickets for some time until the flow of the fans in the building is clearer. When that flow during the game becomes more predictable we will make a decision on standing room."
