Yeah....Simms..that was pretty impressive. As far as Bohannon is concerned, this guy has put up more highlight plays than "the terminator" put up in his entire time here yet gets little press. The new Rex I take it. Just a solid football player. Made the one dumb move when it looked like he had the first down if he went outside and thought he was Barry Sanders taking it inside in the attempt to make a move.

He got reemed for that and from the looks of him, will never do that again.

He's fighting for a roster spot is my guess. And not being a special teams player he could be on the bubble.

Braylon Edwards is like a 3rd/4th receiver at this point. Given that he doesn't play on ST's that makes him vulnerable to the Jets deciding to go with a younger guy with multiple roles.

Easy calls: Jeremy Kerley, Santonio Holmes (if healthy), Stephen Hill (barring a shocker)
Versatility: Clyde Gates (if making roster as KR)
Youth movement: Ryan Spadola, Zach Rogers
Bubble: Braylon Edwards, Clyde Gates (if not KR), Zach Rogers (scary move to the PS)

And yes I get that Gates has had a good camp, but what can we say about him right now that we couldn't say about David Clowney? If he's returning kicks we can say he's a KR/WR. That's important for him right now and it really hurts Braylon Edwards chances to make the squad if he's competing with Gates on those terms.

Braylon's best chance to make the roster may lie in Santonio Holmes just not being ready to go. Having Holmes stay on PUP/IR for 6 games would really help Braylon out.

  5. Well for one he can run more than one route successfully. He's useful on special teams(which Clowney never was) & he's actually been used to some success on some gadget plays like End arounds in practice to some success.

I'm completely on the same page w/ you about all the other WR's including Braylon..but I really think Gates is an essential player at this point. He's valuable as a #3-4 & he's a lesser version of both Kerley/Holmes which makes him very valuable as a back-up.

Braylon saved nacho on two of his 3 catches, I'm not sure either Hill or Spadola make those catches.. well I'm fairly certain Hill doesn't.. I haven't seen enough of Spadola to comment. They need a go to guy with size. Braylon is the only one that fits the bill at this point. I may change my mind the more I see of Spadola but at this time there isn't anyone on the roster that can do what Braylon does to help out an inaccurate QB.

The issue with Gates is I need to see more as a return guy. His returns for the most part were to the right against Jax, I want to see him handle all types of returns (i.e. left and center). What if he turns out to be the guy that can only run right? Like a point guard that can't dribble for beans with his left hand, he'll get exposed quickly. Lets hope the ST coach calls different return set ups this week.

  8. Don't disagree w/ any of this.

However..whether planned or not this is more of a "Quick in & out of breaks/hit the seam" type of WR group. There's a lot of quick athletic 5'10 or so types who are very dangerous in the open field.

Hill can definitely take the top off a defense & will be an x factor. He gets open & safeties must respect him. Whether he hangs onto the ball is the major question.

As for the big intermediate type. You're right there isn't a consistent force w/ long term capability on the roster. But Obamanu or Edwards could be that steady 2-4 catches a game type within that role.

Obamanu might have the edge given that he's a better route runner, plays special teams & is an idzik guy.

Gates is an absolute lock. He belongs up there with Kerley, Holmes, and Hill. Since you asked, the difference between him and Clowney is
    A) he's a much better player than Clowney and
    B) he doesn't have the competition Clowney had. (clowney would've made this team too)

Gates could end up being one of this team's top recievers by the end of the year. I really don't think he's that bad of a receiver anyway.. I think he's a lot closer to Jeremy Kerley in talent and ability than most people realize.

Zach Rogers ain't making this team. Braylon is fine as long as Holmes is out. If/When Holmes comes back, then his days are numbered. I could see him getting cut once its assured Holmes is back. I think Spadola is an interesting one. I can see him making this team. 6 WRs on the roster week 1, with Holmes' injury, with Spadola and Edwards at the bottom. 5 WRs without Edwards once holmes is back. - My prediction.

I decided to keep this going for this week (no QB talk):

I think Braylon is on the fringe and he might not make it, especially since Holmes is off the PUP list.

I really like what I'm seeing from Winslow, I think he can be a decent TE for us.

The DL, oh the DL is incredible to watch. Damon Harrison did a great job filling in too and stuffing some big runs. With Coples and Ellis back, that DL is going to be stout. Sheldon also picked up a sack!

The depth on D, at safety and CB is concerning. I really like Walls as a depth corner, kind of that role Strickland had back for us in 09. A solid depth corner.

The defense did a good job locking up the outside plays after that one big run.

Special teams, Malone has been blasting kicks. Cundiff and Folk have been doing a great job kicking kickoffs out of the end zone. Our coverage on kickoffs was spotty at times, but improved as the game went along. It was concerning Folk missed a "high" pressure kick. Cundiff also missed with the icing but I'm not sure if he kicked it seriously after he heard the whistle.

Our run game is concerning. I think Khalil Bell provides good depth. Ivory showed some of his burst on a screen catch, but besides that went backwards near our own EZ a couple times. Powell seems to be reliable runner and pass catcher. Mcknight got no snaps I think, he might be on the fringe also.

    BIG MO!!!:metal:

    SNACKS!!! :metal:

SHELDON... (guy needs a nickname) ...:metal:

I love our d-line, its the best thing on the whole damn team. anybody with a weak line is gonna feel it, and will receive a complimentary pillow for their starting piece of dead meat- I mean QB.

not sure who gets the starting kicking job, I was inclined to say folk but now I don't know...

the RB's looked great last week and not so much this weak, so I'm not sure what to make of them. Ivory was getting cute out there to little effect, I need to see more of him breaking tackles like he did before.

the receivers looked okay, but dropped em a bit too much if my memory serves correctly.

Allan made a wrong commitment and basically lost us that opening TD, and Wilson is Wilson.

    1. Dropped passes: Happens when the ball does not come to where the receiver was expecting - i.e. through practices. The only case where I can point the receiver and say it is ALL his fault is... say, Alge Crumpler during the playoff game against the Jets, where Brady delivered perfect spiral right between the numbers.

Sure, adequate receivers make the catch out of the pass more often than not, but also remember there are a lot of other factors, i.e. tighter coverages, protecting yourself after the catch, looking for the daylight after the catch, etc. In that regard, while receivers didn't help Geno much, Geno didn't help them look that much better either.

    2. Geno as of now is worse choice than Sanchez is. Geno next year is a different story but I still stand by this assessment.

    3. Jets need better talent all around, but I'd say Jets will do very, VERY well to draft a QB in 1st, and either OLB or S in 2nd next season. Geno literally shit the bed in my books. I have never seen a rookie so horrible.

Sims looks very good against the 3s. Not sure he would look so good against the 1s. I would give him a shot however.

Geno looked better last night than Ryan Lindley did against us last year.

Any WR's teams were counting on that have gotten hurt in the last couple of weeks? The Jets might be able to get a desperate team to bite on Holmes for a late pick and clear some major cap space in the process. That would leave the Jets with Braylon Edwards or Mohamed Massaquoi or somebody like that in the roster spot that Holmes would otherwise occupy.

I have seen a lot of rookies look worse than Geno looked last night. That doesn't make me feel better about his performance but to suggest that Geno's performance was somehow uniquely bad is pretty silly.

If the Jets had a starting QB right now and Geno was clearly a developmental backup for the year last night would have made us all yawn.

It's the fact that the Jets have no starting QB and that Geno appears to be odds on favorite to win the job that has everybody hyperventilating over normal rookie jitters.

I like the offensive playcalling as well for the most part. As far as the defense our safety play will be a huge factor for the defense this year. That 84 yarder by Wilson should have never happened, Allen was there and completely whiffed on the tackle and Landry was late on the pursuit. I can't say who was at complete fault for that without knowing the playcall but just my observation from the play.

With last nights performance Allen lost any chance he had at the starting job.

A little bit drastic no? After that 1 play he was pretty solid all night afterwards. He's only a second year 7th round pick.
