someone correct me but i recall edwards 1st game as a jet coach was a juicy loss to the colts....at home.....opening day. before we all knew what we were in for, i remember having a very uneasy feeling about edwards, bradway and the stategy they initiated us to that season. fast forward to yesterday and at times i felt as if i was watching a replay of that game......overmatched on both lines, terrible run D, no running game, etc etc etc. it left me wondering where is that talent on this roster? lets face it - there is some talent - Revis is a keeper, Harris will be a keeper at his ILB position, rhodes a keeper, cotchery a keeper, jones and washington are keepers at RB , mangold a keeper at C. - Notice a trend here. we have some keepers but they are young and have not reached their full potential - except for t jones. they have yet to blossom into playmakers and we do not know when they will but the chances are they will and we hope they are on the jets when they do. the issue is we have other players who have blossomed into their full value and its just not enough to carry the team deep into the playoffs. guys like coles, CP, baker, barton, ellis, drob, moore, clement - and others who i cannot recall right now - are nice players, very nice at times but there is no more upside to them and we need to phase in new guys at these positions with the intent of UPGRADING that position. IMO - coles is a 1A type of receiver and he is very good, its up for an argument whether his spot is a spot of need at this point. personally the jets beed to groom another 1-1A type of WR very soon - like next year at the latest. this talent gap will frustrate us this year and the darksiders will be circling. the key will be to get continued improvement out of your young crop of guys, possiby finder a new starter or 2 along the OL and LB?. and dare i say it - at QB. The last opp the jets had to revamp there roster for the good was the year they selected nugent in the draft - and they goofed. this time, the jets will have to revamp several areas leading in to the 2008 season. if they hit gold then we will have a nice cluster of young 1-2-3 year players who will blossom before our eyes in the nest 2-3 years. NOT throwing in the proverbial towel on 2007 as i have stated several times that teams usually take a step back in year 2 - tougher schedule, roster changes to phase in younger guys, phasing out some vets that helped in the inital transition and so on. i will consider 07 a success regardless of the W-L record if...... - the left side of the OL improves from now - running game improves. - the DL makes more tackles - and the TE position becomes more compeitive. i will not comment on the QB as today is NOT the day for it. best, jil
Jil - agreed, but why isn't it the day to comment on the QB? Hurt feelings? No one agrees more about the poor behaviour of Jet fans RE: Chad than I do. However, the QB situation is one of the key issues that has to be fleshed out this season if the Jets are going to make it to the next level. There is a talent gap - the Jets need to close it. I was somewhat dissapointed how they handled the Kendall sitation, it was inevitable what happened. Maybe Bender will become a player? I think the FO thinks so... What will be a success this year? Making strides towards a team that has the talent and toughness to win the Super Bowl in 2008 or 2009.
Because he was by far the best player on the field for the Jets yesterday and makes anyone complaining about him look like they don't know a thing about football.
Which is generally true, most days. However, the OC has to start taking some heat. With this O/L, there are clearly not enough plays chipping at the corner of the flat, to spread the defense w....i....d.....e to open up both the medium miuddle and the run game inside.
You can take this to the bank the NYJs will NEVER/EVER win a SB with CP as the QB just like they were NEVER/EVER going to win a SB with Herm as the HC
Gee, thanks for your fabulous insight, Captain Obvious. What's next, are you going to tell us that oil and water don't mix?
They are defending him because the guy didn't have a terrible game- the O Line and piss-poor D were the cause of our demise. Were you on vacation yesterday?
and you can take this to the bank, the NYJs will NEVER/EVER win a SB with this D no matter who the QB is..
Yes, he was the best player on the field for the Jets. However, considering how awful the team played, that's not saying much. I like Chad's fire and heart, but his physical limitations will always hinder this team. It has nothing to do with the long ball. His long ball is fine. His lack of arm strength comes into play even on the short passes. When Brady makes a thorw, it's zipped in there quickly, allowing the receiver to have a chance to run upfield and gain extra yards. Chad's passes do not afford his wideouts the same opportunity. The ball gets there and the completion is made, but the ball takes a little bit longer to get there, giving the defender a chance to close in and make the tackle immediately. His weak arm is the difference between a 5 yard reception and a 15 yard reception.
Thank you Koz. If you want to discuss the QB position for future success of the team, yesterday wasn't the game to base it on. Chad played as well as he could have with NO RUNNING GAME AND HORRIBLE PROTECTION!!!! And except for the goal line call with Coles lined up in the backfield, Brian called a subpar game. No Brad Smith, not much use of the tightends, not much play action to slow down the pass rush, no oustide running. I didn't see one sweep or pitch play yesterday testing the edges. With a guy like Mangold, I thought we'd see a lot of what we used to do with Mawae, pulling him out and using his athleticsm to lead block. I saw none of that.
Ah so you are finally agreeing after months & months of defending the NYJs that we lack many, many quality players. Is that correct?
How long until we ban your senile ass again? You have to be the worst poster in the history of this board. Calling you a troll is being nice.
I never said this was a SB caliber team, NEVER! I did expect the D to play better than they did yesterday and thankfully they have 15 more games to do so.
In 2004, the defense was very good and we had the NFL Rushing Titleholder, yet we couldn't score points. Granted, we had garbage at the time behind Chad, but he still couldn't get it done.
While I agree with your point that the Jets won't win a SB with Chad, I hope you're not blaming that on him. The wrong team has been built around him. If you put Chad on last year's Bears' team, for example, I honestly believe they're SB champs. Ditto with the Ravens or Chargers. Chad's an excellent QB in that he will never cost you the game. He makes fewer mistakes than any other QB in the league, but he needs the right team around him. He's not going to win games on his own, and he's not going to be able to guide a team from behind when he has to air it out. Defenses know he won't be throwing deep, so he's generally unsuccessful when every situation is a short throwing situation. The Bears struggled last year because their D and running game could control games, only to see their QB make a mistake and turn the momentum back to the other team. If you put Chad on a team with a solid line and solid D, he's a SB QB.
I'm for praising Chad yesterday but your argument "fewer mistakes than any other QB in the league" doesn't bode well when you consider that his TD and INT count were nearly identical last year.
