Seeing as there has only been one draft so far with this regime, we can't really come up with any patterns of drafting. The only thing we know is what we've been told and that for the most part will draft the BPA. Leonard Williams was not a need, AT ALL, but Mac and Bowles saw the talent and wisely choose to draft it because that's what u should do. I did go back though to observe any patterns from previous Arizona and Houston drafts. What I noticed from the last two drafts and is that defense and OL were drafted high. Looking back in the past drafts of the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans here are a couple of known players drafted high. Tyrann Mathieu DB, Kevin Minter LB, Alex Okafor LB, Jadeveon Clowney LB, DJ Swearinger S, Jonathan Cooper OG, Xavier Sua- Filo OG, Brennan Williams OT Just some food for thought, Now on to the draft... 1. Myles Jack ILB UCLA (6'1 245) David Harris is playing solid but is getting older, DeMario Davis doesn't deserve big money and he can't cover particularly well either if he leaves I'd have no problems with it as long as we can get ILB to replace him. This draft actually is pretty top heavy at that position. Myles Jack, Jaylon Smith, Reggie Ragland and Scooby Wright are all 1st round LB prospects and would fit in the in a 34 scheme. What separates Jack from the others though is that's he's an ELITE cover LB maybe the best come out in years, coverage wise. Jack is special everywhere else as well. His only downfall is a knee injury that prematurely ended his junior season, but he's a rare talent. Jack won Pac-12 Offensive and Defensive Freshman of the year as a part time RB full time LB in 2013. Whether Jack falls to us is a question and the combine will play a big part in that but I'd gladly take a linebacker like Smith or Ragland here, this is a great group. Scheme wise Ragland probably fits the best and Smith is another special prospect that might be the first LB chosen overall. Gronk stopper / part time back up RB 2. Jayron Kearse S Clemson (6'4 220) Freak athlete at 6'4 220, why another safety u ask well Bowles has a lot of 3 safety looks. In ARI he had Mathieu, Bucannon, Johnson and Jefferson and they were rotated frequently. Right now we have PS guys Miles and Bush starting and getting meaningful snaps. I like A.Allen and could see him filling in that role but I don't think he or Gilchrist are starters. Allens contract is up and Gilchrists contract is pretty much a short term one disguised as a 4 year deal, I think he's a middle of the pack safety and could be upgraded . Kearse is the nephew of former all pro DE Jevon Kearse the original freak so he for sure has the bloodlines. Some compare him to Sean Taylor although not quite the hitter or prospect his measurables are up there. There's one thing that we should really focus on this offseason, and that's stopping Gronk. He is the key to Patriots dominance these past couple years. Take away him, draft players to stop him and that's when we'll take over this division. We weren't fortunate enough to draft the all-pro QB but there's more than one way to win a Super Bowl. DRAFT BETTER Gronk stopper 2.0 3. Kareem Are OL Florida State (6'6 335) A JUCO transfer from Florida State and the first offensive player selected. Looking at the players available currently this draft to me is definitely more talented on the defensive end than it is offensively. No ELITE RBs or WRs only 2 ELITE OTs. TE is solid but no first round prospects there. I'd like to draft a tackle higher but Tansil and Stanley are gonna go really high. I like Spriggs but I'm not picking him over Jack/Ragland/Smith. Are is a JUCO transfer with a ton of talent, he's a great run blocker already and needs some more development in the passing game but he should be a fine starter. 4. Stacy Coley WR Miami FL. (6'1 187) In 2013 Coley was voted a freshmen all-American gaining 1463 all purpose yards. Injuries have slowed his trmendous start since but Coley has played solid this season. Really good run after the catch guy and we need another WR with Smith being lost for the season. Coley is a burner 4.3 speed with really good RAC ability. As a hurricanes I can't tell u about the wasted talent that has come through here, be unnoticed and suddenly flash potential in the NFL. He may one just another talented cane not utilized properly during the "Al Golden" era 5. Beau Sandland TE Montana State (6'5 250) Former Miami JUCO transfer, this guys really intrigues me physically he's impressive. Almost a Amaro clone good size and better than average speed. I'm not looking this up but I'm pretty sure out of any team in the league we have the fewest catches among TE, some backups Scott Chandler or Ladarius Green are better than anyone we have on our roster. Amaro wasn't drawing rave reviews before coming down with that injury, we need another body. 7. DeAndre Washington RB Texas Tech (5'8 200) Change of pace back, Powell will probably be gone after this year, I doubt Ivory and him are both resigned. Washington can do everything for such a small back he can block, catch out if the backfield and run in between the tackles. He's small but quick isn't blazing fast but he's shifty and sudden.
Nice work bro. Very early but still good shit. I wouldn't be mad at this. We need to bulk that o-line up a little more though early in the draft. That safety... is he a free safety? and would you take him if we retain Marcus Gilchrist?
I like it, but taking a safety 2nd is rough. He'd obviously have to be a steal, like a clear 1st round talent and a true FS for me to like the move. I believe Gilchrist's contract is pretty guaranteed so, its not like we can just cut him and save money as a result.
Good read. I like it. I don't know beans about any of the players, but like your justification and what you say about the players. Does either Stacy Coley or DeAndre Washington return punts? If not, that would be my only quibble. We either have to get a WR or RB who is a good PR.
I like it! Only thing is depending on FA. If we don't address RB in FA then we shouldn't wait till the 7th for a RB.
Jayron would play FS for us, he might run a 4.3... As far as Gilchrists contract nothing really more is guaranteed other than this year... Refer to this article http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/03/marcus_gilchrists_jets_contract_not_at_all_what_it.html So he can get cut after this season or we can keep him either way his contract really isn't guaranteed. As far as the question regarding Coley and Washington returning kicks, Coley has the ability and has done it it college.
So I'd suppose that if we took Kearse in round 2, we would probably cut Gilchrist at the end of the 2017 season and save that $6 mil, which isn't bad. We would also have a very young secondary at that point, Pryor, Kearse, Marcus Williams, and perhaps Revis could mentor that group if he's still around.
Bowles has been very complimentary of Gilchrist, and said that he quarterbacks the secondary. I would think that unless Williams or Pryor possesses that ability, regardless of how much talent and speed Kearse has, he would need to be just as smart as Gilchrist and have that ability to QB the secondary before he would supplant Gilchrist as the starter. I haven't been able to see the Jets that much this season, so haven't formed a definitive opinion on Gilchrist yet. In the 2-3 games I've seen, I think he has blown some coverages for big gains or TDs and missed some tackles, so I'm leaning more negative than positive, but I could be getting him confused with another player. Either way, it doesn't matter what I think, but rather what Bowles thinks. The idea of having a young secondary with Pryor, Kearse and Williams is definitely appealing. That would potentially give us perhaps the best safety combo in the league, and a lot of speed on the back end.
coulda sworn gilchrist only had one year guaranteed money like cromartie .. he'd be an easy cut but I don't think we will cut him he's been solid this year.
A Linebacker and a Safety one and two is completely vomitous imo howevever, nice research on the OL and WR...frankly offensive players should be going 1 2 and 3 for us with that TE 3rd and RB 4th Something like a 60%/ 40% split O vs D
Holy shit. I would take this draft as is and not look back. Please send an email or letter to Mac. Seriously. And if you don't want to I will. True story. _
This would be an incredible draft, but I don't see the 1st/2nd round as remotely realistic. (and I don't really know enough about some of the guys you've picked lower than that.) If we don't make the playoffs we'll be picking about 20th, dropping into the mid-late 20's depending on our playoff performance. At ILB, J. Smith/ M. Jack are my 1/2 prospects atm. Either would be absolutely insane value with the 20th pick. Both will likely be gone by the 15th pick. Ragland hasn't impressed me quite as much on tape, but I honestly have weird trouble evaluating 'Bama players. That said, what limited film I've seen on him hasn't really impressed me the way Smith/Jack have, so I'd probably be just as happy with a solid OL prospect there. If Jayron Kearse makes it out of the first round, I'll be really surprised. If he makes it past the 40th overall pick, someone's found a drug problem no-one knew about or something.
If this was our draft i'd double Gronk with our 1st and 2nd round pick all day... Put Marcus Williams/Buster Skrine on on Edelman with a Pryor shadow on top of that.. Let out D-line destroy those young boys they got on the o-line... sheeshhhh. That oughta make Brady wanna hurry up and retire! lol!
The more i look into this thread and watch all the videos and look into the small details.. my god this draft would set us to be like a defensive dream team by 2017 season. Pryor and Kearse = Baby Earl & Kam Good work again my man.
I like it, but with our current record we might have to trade up for Jack. Love the pick though, fantastic MLB in space.
I like the first 2 picks but i just don't think either will be in their respective rounds they're when the JETS are OTC. i actually propped Jayvon Kearse in a thread earlier this season. And I didnt know that about Gilchrist being off the $$ books this year if we so choose ----- good read. There will be more experience O-lineman when our 3rd round is OTC, ------ specifically my favorite = Sebastian Tratola. Sorry, but not sold on a WR in the 4th --- even though the guy is lightning fast & we lack speed on the team.
Coming back to this after yesterday... losing to buffalo may be the only way we even get close to this happening... we're destined for big things if we get in the playoffs i can feel it!
Gilchrist is not a strong safety by any stretch. He's a converted cornerback and played a pretty pedestrian strong safety spot in San Diego. I like the ideas but I think offensive tackle/guard is a more urgent need early on in the draft. I understand that you don't draft based on need but the draft is flooded with good tackles at the top of the draft. We could see 5+ tackles/guards go in the first round. We've been trying to patch around the offensive line with lower round picks for the past 5 years and none of them have worked out. I understand it's a new regime but we need to invest in a right tackle/future left tackle. Brick has one more year I'd say, so draft a tackle get his feet wet on the right side and he'll take over the blind side in 2017. I love the players, and I think if we take OL in round 2 this would be a slam dunk draft. Jack is going to be a baller if he recovers from his knee injury well. I think safety would be an extreme luxury pick and you're vastly underrating Gilchrist. I wonder if anyone has the PFF rankings for safeties as I imagine he'd rank near the top this season.
18th I believebelieve, but in the beginning of the season he cracked top ten and slowly declined bit by bit like Revis, despite solid play.
