+ These little hook routes over the NTare making me crazy. I saw this one which Chad fired into like 4 Bills defenders. The intended receiver Cotchary had guys hitting him high/low sideways as well as two or three guys deflecting the ball. The gain (if he would have miraculously caught it) would have been 5 yards The O line is now giving him time. He needs to recognize such if it continues in a big game. He looked a bit unnecessarily hurried against the Bills. Against a good team we may need to take some shots down field to loosen the defense. I would kill myself i I was a Bills fan and had to watch JP Losman every week. Why is he the only QB who's legs are stretched when he lines up under center? Celebrating like a scrub after that insignificant touchdown. What a clown
Personally I would love the Jets to feature at least 50% of their passes to be flat routes, run the draw play on every 3rd down and in the redzone 90% of the time run and 10% playaction pass to a FB, TE, or HB in the flat. I actually think that the Jets should stop running downfield routes at all.
If it's guaranteed, 6-7 yard passes occasionally aren't a bad idea. If you force the defense to worry about the shorter range, you can actually hit on the longer passes sometimes. It's about mixing things up, and I think the Jets have been doing a good job offensively on that.
I agree with him. It's not hook routes in general, it's these passes he throws right over the D-line, into the path of the LBs. It always looks ugly, and pretty much never works. I think it worked once against the Pats but in general, it always looks like a disaster. I could do without them.
Also take into considerion the 20-mph wind in Buffalo...It's not like he can air it out without the wind overtaking it at some point... I like it thus far.
Well put. Penny had no choice but to make short passes. It was smart football with little room for error. On a calmer day, things would be different.
Funny you mentioned the 6 yard hooks in the middle. The two times we did that, Brad Smith was lined up in the backfield and ran a flat route and was open both times. Pennington didn't even look at him.
That's why they tried it. With Smith there, you hope defenses will take a step or two back, and open the short game. The point about the wind is significant. It takes a very tight spiral to throw in that kind of wind. While Penny is stronger than I have ever seen him, he still doesn't throw tight spirals downfield. All that, plus we are running an offense built on the short accurrate passing attack. This is the offense we should have been seeing all along with Chad at the helm. And why not throw the short passes? Look at the athleticism our WRs have shown so far. They are taking 5 yard plays and turning them into 10-15 yard plays. I would like to move away from the middle of the field more. Penny has been deadly accurrate in the middle, but eventually it's going to catch up to him. Go to the sidelines and get Coles and Cotch the ball. Let them be the playmakers.
lets also remember that the reason it appears the O-line is giving penny time is because of the short passes.....you might start throwing deeper and realize the protection isnt there
Guys, the Buffalo pass rush had crushed the Dolphins the week prior. The short passing game was the only way to neutralize that threat. Add to that the wind that was in the stadium (and I was there, so I know), and it was a no brainer. It was the game plan, and it worked. I cannot imagine why anyone is complaining about it.
exactly...coles has great open field moves, and as long as we block downfield, we'll get opportunities for long runs
I say we sign Eric Crouch and put him and Brad Smith in at wideout and do a triple option reverse pass every play. Defenses could NEVER handle that.
Just think.. Remember when Herm coached us up in Buffalo? He mentioned the wind before, during and afterthe game, and constructed game plans conservative enough to make even Reagen roll over in his grave. The result was playing not to lose...and as a result we usually lost. At least we THREW the ball and scored some points which allowed us to win the game
I really don't think the guy was questioning the short passing game as a whole. Just the particular routes that go right into the path of the LBs, which leaves the receiver being covered by 3-4 guys with pretty much no chance to make a play. I know exactly what he's talking about, it looks ugly and dangerous.
