In reading through some of the threads here (granted I haven't read everything), I have to wonder what people were expecting. Did you think the Jets were going to stand toe-to-toe with a much improved Pats team? Did you think we would catch BB unprepared? Did you think our weaknesses would not be exploited? I often read in here about "closing the gap with the Patriots". In my opinion this is a fruitless goal, and I believe this opinion is shared by the Jets CS/FO. It is a loser's mentality to chase a single team. The goal of this team should be to improve. At this time, there is no way to judge if the Jets are better or worse than they were last season. You can't use a single lopsided defeat to a superior (and much improved) rival. This isn't Michigan/Ohio State. We need to judge the state of this team over the course of the season. As painful as is it is to lose to the Pats, it is just 1/16th of the season. I hope this team is better than they looked today. However, it is impossible to gauge where we stand today. It is still possible the Jets are a better team than last season. DbJ
I guess i expected this organization to make smart choices....like not letting key pieces of protection for a qb who desperately needs it go(Kendall). "Tangenious",i expected to be more active in FA and build this team up on the lines first and foremost.
That's a pretty objective (and reasonable) outlook you had on the game. I think most of these threads are a result of being completely shell-shocked in the first week of the season. It's not that the Jets lost, but it's how they lost. Going by last year, I guess many of us were expecting the Jets to build upon what they did from the previous season, but it actually looks like they went back a step. It's unfair to use the matchup against a vastly improved New England team to get an idea of where we are, in terms of progression, but most people like to look at it that way. All this doom and gloom business taking over the board was to be expected after all the unreasonable expectations that were dumped on the team.
It's not what we should have expected, it's what should have happened. We all have talked about how brilliant Mangini is, so we were all waiting to be surprised.
I think no one who really has a clue about the NFL thought the jets would walk away with a win today. Listen im a die hard jets fan and ill be there every sunday till the day i die and cheered the jets all day today till i lost my voice. But in my mind i knew the jets would get outplayed and crushed today but being a jets fan you have to have hope and believe they could somehow put themseleves in position today to win. that just wasnt the case.
i knew they would lose. But these people who got so much praise running this team last year let both lines go to swiss cheese. I expected to be competetive
We expected them to lose but not by 24 points. I am not surprised that once again the Patriots got very cute by using defensive players on offense to score a garbage time touchdown.
That is such crap. In 2003 Patriots lost week 1 31-0 to the Bills. They went on to win the Super Bowl. Thank God your not the coach: "Game over man!"
1989 Steelers: They lost their first two games by scores of 51-0 and 41-10. They went on to win a playoff game that season. 1985 Jets: They lost their first game by a score of 31-0. They made the playoffs. 1994 Raiders: They lost their first game by a score of 44-14. They made the playoffs. What about the 1994 49ers losing 40-8 to the Eagles in a Week 5 game in San Francisco?
DBJ: I waffled between two scenarios. I thought we'd lose by no less than 10, even though our pass rush is non-existent and with OL questions marks. The other part of me thought we'd pull out a shocker. Because I wanted it that way. When we tied 7-7, I thought OK, here's where we shore up, pull some tricks out of the hat, and make Belifraud sweat at least. In all honesty I didn't expect to be steamrolled. Not like that. And I went home cranky and disappointed over how badly we got beaten. I'm not even so sure 'adjustments' are the issue. The talent level looked terrible. I'm too tired to gather my thoughts more than this right now.
did you miss the whole "season predictions" thread? according to more than a few here the jets should win 12 games. unfortunately for us here on earth bound by reality we were told that the jets could win as many as 14....i think i had the jets finishing second to the pats....or maybe even 3rd underneath NE and miami....i also called the lions winning the nfc north....
This shouldn't be a loss that we can't recover from. This should be a game that gives the team a wake up call. Clearly our players and coaches were underprepared and outmatched today, and we need to make sure that this doesn't happen again. I have a feeling that Mangini will be riding this team's ass all week in practice, as he should. The Ravens aren't unbeatable, but we are going to do have to do alot more than we did to prepare for this game if we want to stand toe to toe with them.
Not for nuthin', but I can't see Mangini being 'unprepared' for this one. I'm not really sure what the hell it was. We did get pasted by the Jaguars last year, so hopefully today was this season's stinker and that's the end of it.
Yah I have to agree with you there, that still puzzles the shit outta me (ewww) I'd have to imagine adalius thomas would rather play for the Patriots, but as far as Moss we could have made that trade.. But what are you going to do, that was in the summer Its time to MOve on.
Good thoughts. This was certainly an ugly loss, but one that the Jets can recover from. If they do or not is another matter. The Pats had all of the answers and overpowered the Jets OL and DL's. I hope that the Jets can regroup and give us a decent game next week. I doubt they could play much worse. Personally a 24 point ass whipping is never expected even though it happens every so often. I doubt a lot of people thought the Jets would win outright but its expected that a game like today would put people in bad moods.
