His cap # is too high to cut him so why else are they brining in K's? As of now he's safe, if it lasts thye may have to swallow the cap hit but they have no intentions of cutting Nugent now. Remember he had no competition in camp so maybe this helps him concentrate more. It's not a good sign when your k gets nervous and can't Kick so if the competition has a negative effect on him then maybe we should cut ties now.
What the??? Your first sentence says his cap # is too high to let go.... then your last sentence says its ok to cut him if he doesn't perform?? Hard to fight that logic. We also brought in Frisman Jackson, should coles be worried? What about Brandon Moore? Fact of the matter is his horrid performance will be THE factor for giving him the extra motivation. Nobody knows how he will respond to the criticism, but I assure you replacement kickers won't be the reason for the turn around. If he continues to suck it up we know the guy we want to bring in since we are trying guys out now.
I think he can bounce back and he has definitely dealt with this level of scrutiny before. He played at OSU in front of a 104k people every week. His first year he really struggled and used to get threats when he would go out on campus. The pressure of playing in nyc is not something new to him. Those people in Ohio are absolutely crazy about their football...they have nothing else to do! He bounced back from his freshman year so hopefully he can do the same here.
Didn't know he struggled early at OSU....good fact there. It only proves that he has bounced back from this sort of thing before. Thanks for the info.
His cap # is too high to cut him to make an example of him, I said if he doesn't react well to competition then maybe we need to swallow the hit. We are talking about a K that had no competition in camp, now you will bring up Frisman Jackson and Coles? If you are going to try to compare it to something you need to come up w/ something better than that. They are bringing guys in to light a fire under Nugent. Whether it works or not is the not what we are talking about but that is the reason they are doing this.
Nugent lost his cool on the first miss and then he became rattled, What Mangini is doing is gonna do one of two things, it will make him settle down and straighten up or rattle his brain even more. We will see next week what happens. I hope he wakes up that his career could be very short if he does not kick a helluva lot better.
One bad game? This is a reoccuring theme with this guy. If he is so great he will be able to perform with a little competition breathing down his neck
Where's Morten Andersen when you need him? Edinger had a weird season last year. He was 11-11 inside 30. Only 3-8 from 30-40, but a very nice 8-10 from 40-50. And an acceptable 3-5 from 50+. Made all his extra points.
I'm not too sure this is the way to go with Nugent. To me he is a confidence kicker..he makes a FG early in a game and he doesnt miss or as Sunday he misses one and falls to pieces. This is maybe an early test for Mangini in how he responds with his man management skills and the way with this kid is probably the arm around the shoulders. Now Mangini has brought in some Kickers there is an awful lot of pressure for Nugent to perform against the Pats and his first FG will be the biggest of his life. Now not to say so what he's paid well enough to do a job that anybody with a strong and accurate leg wouldnt want to do but i actually think he will be a success down the line much like Leahy but Sunday is now huge for this kid and i hope and pray he is a success
I'm not the one making connections between auditioning people and 'lighting fires.' I think its ridiculous for people to think Nugent cares that there auditioning kickers; it's a non-factor. I used a extremely ridiculous example (from the same 1st post) because no one auditioning for a spot has a chance making any significant impact after 1 week's play. The only thing the FO is making sure they have a contingency in case Nugent continues to have a mental roadblock. Oh! so know the plan was to cut him to make an example of him? Probably would have helped to actually type that to begin with. The logic changes again.... Bottomline is I like the fact that everyone likes the initial returns from the CS and FO but this notion takes things to far.
no excuses - Nugent has missed too many kicks in his 1+ seasons - and Mangini isn't going to let a kicker cost him. This is Mangini's team - and if he has the balls to whack Nugent - that's awesome!
I wish we could carry 2 kickers. I bet nugent would kick better if edinger was on the sideline waiting to take his job.
I like it! Nugent needs a fire lit under him. I almost stroked out when he missed that second FG last Sunday! A coach can't let the hard work of the team be sabotaged by one player.
I think Mangini just has to spend some personal time with him if he really wants to fix the problem. Set him straight through some conversation. The kid is already scared shitless of playing in the NFL, I don't think bringing in competition to scare him more is going to do any good. We will see on Sunday though.
I second this wholeheartly, It appears Nuge supporters do not realize how close his misses on Sunday almost cost us the game. Can you imagine what this board would have been like if his misses was the difference between winning & losing?
