I noticed the Jets running a D front i hadn't seen before against Detroit. In long yardage situations, they were employing a 5-1-5 look, like a pressure Nickel package. The front had 5 of their better pass rushers all with their hand in the dirt. Coples McIntire Wilkerson (NT) Richardson Barnes Harris remained the lone LB. Wilson joined the other DB's, as he does in all Nickel packages. I really like the potential pressure this front can bring. In long yardage situations, forces teams to leave these guys all single blocked or leave a back/TE in for extra support. Even with the extra blocker in, would have to get the pass off quickly. could be very effective considering our secondary. something to keep an eye on this preseason.. Other observations The Jets kept it fairly vanilla, as expected in the preseason. There were no 1-3-7 fronts with roaming players all standing, no overload blitzes, and limited 46. - On 2 back or double TE sets, they ran a base 3-4 with only a couple 46 looks. - On 3 WR or empty backfield sets, they ran the Nickel. On the base Nickel, Richardson and Ellis come off, Barnes and Wilson come on. The base typically had 3 technique sets, with Coples and Wilk sliding in, Barnes and Pace hand in dirt at End. Essentially the front used in a 4-3. Occasionally Coples lined up outside shade of Center, depending on strong side of offense. - Coples was lined up all over the field. At OLB as expected (both up and down), NT, 3 technique and even 5 technique. Rex is either trying to find his best fits, or really plans on using him as an X factor. should be interesting to watch. - While Richardson is only playing 5 technique DE in the base 3-4 with the first team, he did play some 3 technique on the Nickel packages with the 2's. I expect Rex will ease him into other looks like he does most rookies, and he'll play that role eventually too. - Harris will be on the field in every defense. Davis will come off in the Dime and the Pressure Nickel described above. I expected this, and think Harris can be in for a big year with more splash plays blitzing. Just something to look for next game as they tinker with the personnel, and eventually reveal some different looks (against the Giants maybe)..
Thank you for this thread. I'm going to have to go back and look for alignments and shifts now. You rule.
Thanks for the write up. Good stuff. Gave me some pointers for narrowing in when re watching and for the future
Since Rex has taken a hand off approach with the offense, I expect him to dial up all kinds of wacky defensive looks. Don't turn your back, Marty.
Great write up. With so many versatile players it's good to have coach who knows how to maximize their potential. I love the 5-1-5 look.
Nice, yeh i really liked the look of our d. Coples looks to have a monstr year. Guy is lining up everywhere like you said and made a ton of plays no mattr where he lined up including chasing down reggie bush and not letting him get a first down on a sweep. Kid is fast and huge, gonna be a scary defensive front this season
NICE JOB. This post reminds me of why this is a great forum. Analysis! I'm surprised you were able to concern yourself with the team's preseason defensive fronts now that Dan Carpenter was released by Miami, and Sanchez was AGAIN named the starter for Saturday. ; ) You are really focused. haha.
Until you wrote this I hadn't noticed this, just assumed it was a nickel D. Nice job! I know it was just one pre-season game but didn't think they got enough pressure early on the QBs leaving them to make short and intermediate completions. I commented on this in another thread, Wilson was all over the field and although he was making the tackles was giving up chunks of yardage, this could have been any one of our DBs. I think and hope once the Bucs game gets here that front 5 is going to be nasty fasty. I see a monster year for our D this year if everyone can stay healthy.
They run a base Nickel as well, with 4 down lineman (sometimes one of them standing depending on the offense). You can spot the 5-1-5 (what i'm calling Pressure Nickel) on say 3rd and Long. Easiest way to notice....it is 5 down lineman with the Center and Guards covered. Similar to the 46 in that regard, but with 5 DB's and no LB's or S cheating up to the LOS or box. I could definitely see Harris blitzing between G and C in this front. Teams would almost certainly have to leave a RB in, and QB would only have 2 secs to throw.
Thx for the feedback guys... I'll b out of the country for next 8 days, and will miss the Jax game. Let me know if they are using this 5-1-5 regularly...
I'll have to look out for some of these sets Saturday night. Good looking out. The front 4/5 is going to be a good group to watch. Exciting to see some of these guys develop into (hopefully) some of the league's best. Mo is on his way there already.
The defense might end up being in the top 5 again. We are much more athletic, and faster than we were in years past.
i think in the 5 1 5 you are going to see a ton of db blitzescoupled with some 7 man rushes. it is so easy to disguise the blitzer and rex loves to get the free run at the qb. as long as we get sound coverage and good tackling it is going to be a tough defense to beat on long downs
Yeah I just took a look, (I have the game pass thingy) You're spot on, just never noticed the 5th lineman. Harris actually looks quicker than he did so this could be is very interesting. Richardson is going to draw double teams before long with his aggression and speed, can't wait to see how this pans out this season
nice write up i noticed the 5-1-5, as well ... one time we had four rush the qb while coples dropped into zone coverage
Dense of me but the mention of the 5-1-5 rang some bells for me. It was referred to in Brian Costello's Jets Blog on NY Post after Westhoff spoke about it as a good way to maximise the talent available on d http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/jetsb...westhoff_hoIGEcQruN1YbV0eaYiAOM#axzz2c9mEjAxD 2. WESTHOFF’S PLAN – Former special teams coach Mike Westhoff has been at practice for the last few days. He had an interesting idea for the Jets’ defense. He believes that they would maximize their talent by playing five defensive linemen/outside linebackers, one middle linebacker and five defensive backs. Westhoff said that would play to their strengths. You’d have Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Quinton Coples, Calvin Pace and Antwan Barnes on the line, giving you a strong pass rush. Play Demario Davis at inside linebacker because he can cover as well as rush. Then you’d have one safety in Dawan Landry and four cornerbacks with Antonio Cromartie, Dee Milliner, Kyle Wilson and either Ellis Lankster or Isaiah Trufant.
On the 5-1-5 Demario should be able to stay and utilize his speed in coverage? or a blitz?? I think his versatility is key esp since TE's killed us in the middle, and Scott obv couldnt keep up. Davis glaring weakness has to be the run. Should be a fun defense to watch, I hope there is not much learning on the ground, and that they are ready to fly ( JETS pun intended)
