Our 3-4 nose, should be a 3-4 DE

The first three games that I have watched of the Jets this season has made me realize that D-rob should not be playing NT for this team, he is playing out of posittion.

I think that he should line up as the RDE in the 3-4 allignment. Because he has speed and power the two things that are needed for that position.

If D-rob were to move to that spot we would then start Moore at NT and have him rotate with Kimo, and Mosley as the NT.

If you turn back the clock to when Drob got drafted there was a lot of specutlation that the Pats wanted to trade up to the #2 pick with Det to leap frog us and draft Robertson.

In that same draft they picked Ty Warren a DT in college who was moved over to DE in their 3-4 scheme. I think that if they would of drafted Robertson he would be used in the same way as Warren. Almost as a poor mans Richard Seymour.

To me when Drob lines up at NT is negates his speed. But if he did make the shift over to DE he would still be able to hold his ground but generate a pass rush as well due to his speed.

I said that as soon as we implemented the 3-4 that DRob would make a fantastic 3-4 end size and speed wise. He'd have to make that transition, but the results would probably be a lot better.

Agreed. There certainly is a reason he isn't being moved over. NT simply isn't a position of strength, so maybe moore isn't ready to handle the starting load, b/c drob certainly hasn't held his ground at the position.

This is the one area I have a problem w/ Mangini. He has 4-3 personnel and he's playing a 3-4. We heard about how this D would be flexible playing some 3-4 and some 4-3 but we haven't seen that yet. The D stinks right now and something needs to be done to fix it- you cannot rely on safety blitzes to create TOs every week.

That's why he's bringing in and trying out more LB's and DE's

He should def be moved to a 3-4 de....i think he could actually succeed there, as it is more like the 4-3 3shade that d-rob actually excelled in

Of course he should be moved to DE, we all knew that. D-Rob playing at NT just makes him look so bad, he's not a NT, and he's getting a bad rap by the fans because he isn't producing.
Would you move a FB to RB? Or a RB to FB? No.....D-Rob busts his ass out there but is playing out of position, and its really hurting us.

I think he'd be great at DE. After all, "cain't nobody block" him.

It's time to derail the D-Rob excuse train. The guy is a bust and with his health problems is probably never going to be a productive player in the NFL.

I don't think saying he isn't a NT is an excuse, more of a fact. NT isn't supposed to produce stats, just clog lanes. He can't do that. In the 4-3, he was expected to produce stats and did not. I'll make no excuses for him except that right now he is playing out of position and would be better suited to DE in the 3-4.

So he didn't produce as a DT, isn't producing as a NT, what makes you think that he'll produce as a DE?

But didn't D-Rob declare that "Can't nobody block me"?

Roy Williams said the Lions would beat a team by 40. Lots of people say things. Chad Johnson has the biggest mouth in football and he hasn't done shit this year. In the 3-4 you don't produce stats, you just have to clog. D-Rob, as a DE, has the potential to play well. I didn't say he was going to break into the scene and define how to play 3-4 end. Most good 3-4 ends are converted 4-3 tackles. Kimo, roughly the same size as D-Rob, but he plays end. No excuses for D-Rob. It is almost a taint on the coaching staff that they keep him in there at NT.

The problem with making him a 3-4 end is again that position is not meant for someone to shoot gaps. A 3-4 end is meant to stay in his gap and take up blockers and try to and push the pocket on passing downs. The best 4-3 pass rushing tackles really don't have a home in a 3-4. Warren Sapp couldn't do anything in a 3-4 at tackle and Strahan would be pretty useless at end in a 3-4 as well.

This is why finding 3-4 defensive lineman is so difficult. Kimo was one of the best ones around but he's getting up there in age. It's important to have a guy like him in the rotation. This is why the Pats have been so good. Seymour and Wilfork are amazing in the 3-4, two of the best lineman in football. No matter what you put behind those guys you have to double team them and that makes things easier for the linebackers.

D-Rob did produce, he had an excellent 2004 season, and should have been sent to the pro bowl. Its not an excuse, its a fact. D-Rob is not a NT, and never was.

This is something else that needs to stop. The Jets D was excellent in 04, and Robertson was just OK playing on a star studded DLine. One poster says "D-Rob should've made the Pro Bowl in 04" then all of a sudden this is the stock line from the D-Rob apologists.

  18. I've been saying all season that D rob is a better fit at DE. I'm not sure he's a good fit for this scheme in general as he's more of an "attacking" dlineman..rather than a guy who can hold his ground.

However, in limited time at 3-4 De...despite what D rob bashers will have you believe...he HAS made afew plays. NT is not where he belongs and the longer he is there, the more he will struggle and the more this d will struggle. End of story.

Exactly. He's trying... I have to say that for him. It's not his calling and we'll desperately need a legitimate NT for next year, the year in which we make a legitimate run for the playoffs (unless that happens to fall in our laps this year). DRob will be a much-improved DE with a little "help." In other words, provide him with equal-or-better talent along the line and you'll see a whole other story out of him. But on his own and without an Abraham... let's not give him the awesome responsibilities of NT... it's just not him. The sooner we make this switch the sooner our entire DEF improves. Get him out of there.

And for God's sake, reinstate the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy on the chow line at the Netherlands. Have we learned nothing?

He prouced very well in '04, he was a key to our top 5 D and was one of the best DTs int he NFL that year. last year he struggled through some injuries and this year he's playing out of position.

He was excellent that year. Just watch the tapes. It's not all about sacks, he was great against the run and freed up Abe and Ellis to maul the QB. Go back and watch the SD playoff game- the GL stand that barton got the penalty on and watch the push he got to stuff LT twice.
