It would be devastating if we lost Schotty. Chad loves him. Absolutely adores Brian. That's all he talks about. How much he loves the new offense under Schott. If we lose Schott, i think we move into the Kellen era.
The only question is when we lose Schotty. The only way you get a guy like that to stay around as coordinator for more than a few seasons is if he's the heir apparent to the head coach as Seifert was to Walsh in San Francisco. Mangini is 35 and not going anywhere for the next decade or so. That makes Schotty somebody else's head coach in the next season or two.
So with that said...Do you look for a QB coach to possibly replace Schottenheimer when the time comes and get that coach who has some familiarity with this system and grasp as much as he can from Schotty? Making the transition better/easier for Clemens and the offense.
Yeah you go get somebody like Jeremy Bates back from Denver. Why we let him go in the first place I'm not sure, given the job he did as QB coach for us the year everybody went down. The problem is that he's listed as an offensive assistant to the offensive coordinator in Denver, which means they do not need to give permission if we want to talk to him about being our QB coach. Offensive assistant to the OC is considered a lateral position to QB coach on the org chart so it would not be a promotion, per se, for him to come back to NY as QB coach. I expect Shanahan to try to keep him if we make a move on him. Rick Dennison is currently the offensive coordinator and did a good enough job last year that he's going to stay as coordinator. That would turn it into a money push on both sides for Bates. Also Bates may have an issue with going to Denver for one season and then leaving for anything but a big step up. He'll be thinking about his reputation going forward also.
That link to the Dolphins site was fucking hilarious! I was hoping someone was going to jump on there and wind them up: "yeah, we heard over here at Jets HQ that he's definitely going to Miami, and he's taking Chad Pennington with him. We now have your 1st rounders from this year, next year and the year after, plus your second from this year and next year and Jason Taylor is now a Jet. It's a sad loss to our organisation to lose Schotty, but we'll get over it at some stage."
Moss would compliment Cotchery perfectly right now... Much better than Coles 2-3 receptions over 40 yards yay!!!!!!! He averaged 14.7 and then 10.6!! 10.6!!!!!!!! Ramsey was his QB, not Brunell. Average = Pretty Good < Good. Cotchery can be GOOD.
Remember how Mangini was critisized for hiring such a young guy in Schotty? I don't want to lose Brian S, but I have faith in Mangini to make the right move if it happens. Mangini's success this year may well mark the beginning of a new trend in this copy cat league, where teams now look for new blood, young guys that take a fresh look at how to coach and game plan. When a team in as much disarray as the Phins are, it's the right time to take a chance. If I owned that franchise, Schotty would likely be my choice. At least I'd know it isn't some stinkin prima donna like Saban, who turned out to be a selfish spoiled brat who didn't see his commitment through to the end.
Not only that but the guy interviews well. As evidenced by the fact that B. Shott first interview with Mangini was not supposed to go the way it did. I think that interview was just an exploratory one and they wound up hitting it off and the rest is history. In NE when they had Weis and Crennel they both were said to interview poorly. So they were around longer then you would expect assistants/coordinators of that caliber to be. If BS is not an HC this year barring a catastrophic offensive year in 2007, he is going to be an HC next off season. That being said I do hope he is around for 07' he is schemes and game planning were excellent given the limitations of the talent he had to work with.
How much more perfect can you get than the season Coles and Cotchery had? This coming from a Santana fan, but you have to admit Coles is the better all-around receiver and is better in this offense. In a air-it-out offense then Santana obviously gets the edge. So over 20 receptions of 20+ yards is nothing to you? You make it sound like i'm denying that Coles isn't a possession WR, he is, but does have big-play ability, he's simply a good receiver. And for a guy who said he doesn't look at stats, you seem to mention his average YPC stats pretty vocally:smile:
We're not losing him... The Dolphins have already interviewed 12 people for the HC job and they're interviewing more this week... I even heard they contacted JetsIn2004 because he knows everything...
Doubtful. Most of us feel Miami will not offer the job to Schottenheimer meaning he'll be back for another season.
One reason Moss would not perform on this team, with this QB. He can't go up for the ball with a DB and win often enough. He's a speed guy, and needs a QB who can throw the bomb. Both Coles and Cotchery are better suited to the Jets as long as Chad is the QB. That isn't a bad thing.... it's about having players who compliment each other.
I never had a doubt that Shott was just too young and hasn't done enough in this league to become the Fins next coach. As expected, this is reported from the Palm Beach Post: Of the other 10 candidates the Dolphins have interviewed, sources said the most likely to be brought back for more talks are: Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz, former Atlanta Falcons coach Jim Mora, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin, Dolphins defensive coordinator Dom Capers and Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/dolphins/content/sports/epaper/2007/01/13/a1b_dolphins_0113.html
It was an intelligent move by the Phins. By giving Lil Schott his first HC interview they make him a more realistic potential candidate further down the line for other teams, regardless of his age. If I were them I'd want him coaching another team, too, we swept them in 06.
That source has to be spouting bullshit unless Huizenga is really stupid enough to give the job to Martz. There are jobs out there that I could see Martz maybe fitting in, but at 55 he's a lousy choice to rebuild the Dolphins - and they are gonna have a stem to stern rebuild coming up in 2 years at the outside. The ONLY argument that I could see for hiring Martz would be if they think he can rescue Culpepper's career. I don't see it myself.
