New York Jets: Outside linebacker Calvin Pace will miss the first four games because of a PED suspension, leaving New York without its best OLB. There's also no guarantee that disappointing 2008 first-round pick Vernon Gholston will be ready to start in Pace's place. Possible solution: Marcus Washington. The Redskins saved $4 million this offseason by releasing the 31-year-old Washington following two injury-plagued campaigns. With 37.5 career sacks, Washington has better pass-rush skills than other free-agent outside linebackers like Jerome McDougle and Shantee Orr. Did not see this anywhere, just curious on thoughts on this.
I always liked Washington. He was a playmaker with the Redskins, but has had injury concerns and might not fit the 3-4. I'd be willing to just let Gholston and Thomas play the first 4 games.
We have a 1st rnd pick as back up that should be our plan !! If the guy is a bust at least we know after game 4. I can also see Rex mixing up our fronts to really throw off the OL. I wouldn't be surprised to see a front 4 of Ellis / Douglas / Jenkins and Gholston with Harris / Scott / Trusnik or Murrell.
Don't forget about Jamaal Westerman, one of our UDFAs. With the Pace suspension, Westerman has an even better shot at making the team. Ryan spoke highly of him plenty of times throughout mini-camp. JW is listed as 6'2 255 and he was a very productive defensive end at Rutgers. http://www.newyorkjets.com/team/player/1465-jamaal-westerman
I'm hoping we run alot more 4-3 this year. The players we have are all interchangible, and 4 man fronts will be needed in various situations. Especially to keep Jenkins fresh.
Dark Horses in the mix IMO. I don't think we will sign anyone, we have enough simmering talent for 4 games.
I totally agree. Just let Gholston and Thomas play. Why go get someone for 4 games then release them, or release someone else that we might need down the road.
If by 'next to nothing' you mean what he did last season, then I think it goes without saying that he is a bust. 6th overall pass-rushers don't get three seasons to get to double-digit sacks.
Well last year he showed nuthin' so if he shows next to nuthin' is that considered an improvement?
Thank you! Westerman is going to be a good player for this team. He knows both LB positions so he can back up Gholston/Pace.
