The Green and White Scrimmage is done. The first pre-season game is Thursday. Who ya got?

QB (3) - Smith, Vick, Boyd - With Geno's inconsistency and Vick's injury history, the Jets will have to keep another QB around, even if he's not quite ready to play yet. Boyd has the higher upside.

RB (5) - Johnson, Ivory, Powell, Richardson, Bohanon - Richardson will probably stick because of Johnson's pitch count, Ivory's injury history, and Powell's current hamstring issue. I'd personally like Young over Bohanon, but the loudest thing he's done so far is his college highlight tape.

WR (6) - Decker, Kerley, Hill, Nelson, Saunders, Salas - Competition means the winners stay and the losers go home. Enunwa will be an IR stash and Evans will get larger-than-normal practice squad money to stick around.

TE (3) - Amaro, Cumberland, Sudfeld - These guys should perform well as a group and improve as the year goes on.

OL (9) - Ferguson, Winters, Mangold, Colon, Giacomini, Aboushi, Freeman, Dozier, Ijalana - I feel pretty good about the Center and Guard situation both now and going forward, but an injury to one of the starting Tackles could seriously damage the dynamic of this solid but not great unit.

DL (6) - Wilkerson, Harrison, Richardson, Ellis, Douzable, Hyder - Hyder is making some noise, and Harrison, Ellis, and Douzable are on the last year of their contracts. Mark Hyder down for a redshirt season.

OLB (4) - Coples, Pace, Babin, Reilly - This is a group that can perform well for a year or two, but figures to see a near-total rebuild over the next couple years. Coples will be the determining factor as to whether this front seven is pretty good or one of the best in the NFL.

ILB (4) - Harris, Davis, George, Bellore - A decent group that lacks quality depth. Will Harris go the way of Cromartie or Pace in the final year of his contract?

CB (6) - Milliner, Patterson, Wilson, McDougle, Walls, Lankster - This is obviously one of the more interesting position groups. McDougle is a wildcard, but the reports so far have been positive.

S (4) - Pryor, Landry, Allen, Jarrett - It's hard for me to fit a 5th safety here in Miles or Bush, considering that the team largely used 3 safeties consistently in 2013 and the other positions need a little more reinforcement.

ST (3) - Folk, Quigley, Purdum - Yup.

Practice Squad (8) - WR Evans, TE Pantale, OG Campbell, OLB/DE Inemkpali, ILB Divitto, CB Dixon, CB Reeves, S Miles - Lots of potential, but not quite enough umph to make the final roster. The Jets might have to spend a little extra money on these guys to ward off the poachers. I can see any of these guys getting promoted in the event of injury. I'm pretty sure Campbell is eligible because he was never on the game day 45 man squad.

Looks good overall. I don't think they keep Hyder though and instead I believe Campbell will make it instead. These guys didn't want to expose him to waivers last year.
Also I understand Richardson is looking good but I think four running backs is overkill. How many carries will he get this season? Think that Edds or Ford makes the team over him.
Otherwise looks like a good list... we are probably going to see some surprising cuts of veterans prior to season start.

overall i think you are pretty close, give or take a few guys which the preseason will have to sort out.

where i might differ as of today, and things I'm watching for:

    QB - Simms over Boyd
RB - only 3 halfbacks on the 53
WR - good chance we go 7 on the 53. I'd add Ford to that list. agree on dumping Evans from the 53 if Salas outplays him.
OL - agreed and currently i'm concerned about backup T
DL - Hyder could be interesting but will be a tough numbers game for last few spots. Between him, big TJ Barnes, and Grady, i'm betting one of them will be too good to pass on. at least one of them make PS or final 53. something to watch for in preseason.
OLB - Reilly has real uphill battle. PS is more likely, as Barnes and McIntire have very good odds of making team, and if either are cut, it would be for Troy Davis
CB - Reeves could be a surprise if he can contribute on ST as more than just a returner. we'll see. if not, i agree for PS.
S - I think Miles ends up making the team, maybe over Jarrett if they keep only 4
P - not sold on Quigley, but need to see more of competition

not to diss the draft, but spots will be tough to come by this year. i don't think any of our 6th round picks or Reilly (7th) make the 53. At this point i don't think Evans is earning it either. just a matter of whether they IR him or protect him on the 53. otherwise PS is what they are competing for future consideration. nothing wrong with that.

Based on their performance against the Defense, it really doesn't matter who of these wonder boys are out there.....I would just like to see a touchdown or two. Please let my pre season mojo not transform to a no go lol. !!

BTW Greg Salas had five catches, why not hype him a little more than others??

I'll change it up a bit...

QB (2) - Smith, Vick - Free up a roster spot and try to get Boyd (or Simms) to the PS. Neither has "earned" a roster spot this year and each spot is needed.

RB (4) - Johnson, Ivory, Powell, Richardson - I like Richardson a lot and he will be good insurance for CJ. The other 3 are locks. I'm not convinced that Bohanon makes the 53. He didn't do much last year and takes up a valuable roster spot. Could be a spot for Sudfield to get more action on occasion.

WR (7) - Decker, Kerley, Hill, Nelson, Saunders, Evans, Ford - I don't think Evans would clear waivers, lots of WR hungry teams out there. Enunwa goes to IR as others have stated. I think Ford gets the last spot for his KR abilities and potential to make big plays as WR.

TE (3) - Amaro, Cumberland, Sudfeld - These 3 are locks imo.

OL (9) - Ferguson, Winters, Mangold, Colon, Giacomini, Aboushi, Freeman, Dozier, Campbell - I think Aboushi is the swing T and G, while Freeman is the backup C and G. Dozier and Campbell are guys with upside who can't be exposed to waivers.

DL (5) - Wilkerson, Harrison, Richardson, Ellis, Douzable - Mo and DROY won't come off the field much but Douzable will back them up. Lots of good options for a 6th spot including Hyder, Barnes, and Grady but we need roster spots for ST.

OLB (5) - Coples, Pace, Babin, McIntyre, Reilly - Barnes goes on the PUP, which gives McIntyre and Reilly at least 6 weeks to compete. Expect them both to get a lot of ST action until then. Maybe Cunningham goes to the PUP or IR.

ILB (5) - Harris, D.Davis, George, Bellore, T.Davis - The staff appears to be pretty high on Troy Davis and he plays a lot of ST. I can see him getting a roster spot but could be one of the first to go as changes are needed.

CB (6) - Milliner, Patterson, Wilson, McDougle, Walls, Lankster - Downling has a lot of skill but the dude can't stay healthy.

S (4) - Pryor, Landry, Allen, Jarrett - I think Miles will eventually replace Landry, but not this year.

ST (3) - Folk, Quigley, Purdum - It would be great if Freeman could become the LS and free up this roster spot.

Practice Squad (8) - QB Boyd, FB Young, WR Hakim, OLB/DE Enemkpali, DT Barnes, DL Hyder, CB Reeves, S Miles

I'll play. And wow, I've done this in years past and I don't remember it being this difficult. There are a lot of quality players that are going to get left off. It seems like the mantra of competition is a reality with this group

QB (3): Geno Smith - Michael Vick - Matt Simms
RB (4): Chris Ivory - Chris Johnson - Bilal Powell - Daryl Richardson
    FB (1): Tommy Bohannon
WR (7): Eric Decker - Stephen Hill - Jeremy Kerley - David Nelson - Greg Salas - Jalen Saunders - Shaq Evans
TE (3): Jeff Cumberland - Zach Sudfeld - Jace Amaro
    OT (2): D'Brickashaw Ferguson - Breno Giacomini
OG (4): Willie Colon - Brian Winters - Oday Aboushi (OT) - Dakota Dozier
    C (2): Nick Mangold - Dalton Freeman

Comments: Simms simply shows more than Boyd... Four RBs are kept due to a commitment to the run, a committee approach and the constant threat of injury to Ivory... Would like to leave Bohanaon off, but not sure if going with a FB is a reality in this offense; wonder if Sudfeld can play H-Back... WRs were tough; I think Hill gets the nod as #2... Shaq Evans keeps his spot due to scholarship, but Jacoby Ford will have outplayed him could be resigned... Salas will earn a spot and play over the rookies initially... Wouldn't be surprised if Sudfeld plays over Amaro some if these two continue on their current paces; Amaro seems to need more adjustment and seasoning... Schlauderaff is finally released, Campbell misses the squad in favor of Dalton Freeman.

DE (3): Muhammad Wilkerson - Sheldon Richardson - Leger Douzable
NT (2): Damon Harrison - Kenrick Ellis
OLB (6): Quinton Coples - Calvin Pace - Jason Babin - Garrett McIntyre - Troy Davis - Trevor Reilly
ILB (3): David Harris - Demario Davis - Jeremiah George
CB (6): Dee Milliner - Dimitri Patterson - Kyle Wilson- Dexter McDougle - Darrin Walls - Ras-I Dowling
S (4): Calvin Pryor - Antonio Allen - Dawan Landry - Jaiquawn Jarrett

    K (1): Nick Folk
    P (1): Ryan Quigley
    LS (1): Tanner Purdum

Comments: Tough decisions in the LB corps. I'll currently project one of the aging pass-rushers Pace, Barnes and Babin will be cut; it's Barnes for now... McIntyre is quality depth, Troy Davis seems to be catching the eye of the coaching staff and Trevor Reilly gets a shot... Tough leaving Bellore off due to his ST play... Dowling over Ellis Lankster for the final CB spot if he's healthy... Seems to be no room left for Josh Bush... No surprises on ST

Notable cuts: QB Tajh Boyd, WR Jacoby Ford, WR Quincy Enunwa, OT Ben Ijalana, OG Caleb Schlauderaff, OG Will Campbell, LB Antwan Barnes, LB I.K. Enemkplai, CB Brandon Diaxon, CB Ellis Lankster, S Josh Bush, S Rontez Miles

Practice Squad (8): QB Tajh Boyd, WR Quincy Enunwa, OG Will Campbell, DL Kerry Hyder, DT T.J. Barnes, LB I.K. Enemkpali, CB Jeremy Reeves, CB Brandon Dixon

    IR: Jermaine Cunningham

Also, any other injuries will add some clarity, but will have to play that by ear

Here's to hoping we change punters before Week 1.

Another year of Quigley sounds like torture.

    A couple of responses:

Evans is the guy I struggle with the most. It's a pretty big risk to expose him to waivers, but he simply hasn't earned a roster spot yet. Salas is of a similar mold and is outperforming him. I do think Evans could be pretty good with some development, though. If you told me that he was 100% guaranteed to make the roster, I would guess he takes either Boyd or Ijalana's spot.

I think keeping Richardson on the roster is better than having to scour the waiver wire for another running back in the likely event of an injury. I respect disagreement with me on this one, though.

I haven't heard much about Troy Davis, maybe I will have to look harder.

Glad to see you guys are generally on board with Reeves, I'm a little biased towards him. He has a chance to be a pretty good when there's more room for him on the roster.

I say we save a roster spot by not having a FB. Instead have one of the TEs play the position whenever needed.

The problem is we have three tight ends and none of them can block. An alternative would be to keep Pantale and Amaro and then keep either Sudfeld or Cumberland based off of who performs better during preseason. Edit : didn't realize Cumberland had a 1mm guarantee so no chance he's cut

I know people might be higher on Cumby than me but his hands are inconsistent and unless he steps up this year he's a below average receiving tight end with strong measurables that will eventually (hopefully) be replaced by Amaro.

NO way. Boyd will lose to simms. Boyd has looked aweful! Daryl Richardson will not make the roster. Salas will not make the roster...Shaq Evans and Jacoby Ford WILL. TE looks good (but different depth than yours). Hyder is practice squad material..no more than 5 DL. Reilly is practice squad material, McIntyre also makes the roster.

CB looks ok. 5th safety spot to Rontez Miles. ST is good.

Rather have Miles than Jarrett; seeing Jarrett give up that TD to Graham last year was the last straw and probably the only straw lol

Same here but Jarrett has supposedly been having a pretty good camp. I guess we'll see how he does in the preseason

Call me foolish, but if I have four games and four weeks to see who falls on their face, breaks a leg, comes up on the block or finds the way to the promised land, I'm using every hour of it.

my take on the bubble players:

-Salas is showing that he deserves to make this team. Its tough to cut a slot receiver that can get open and catch. Right now it's a tough decision between him and Ford. I'd keep Salas myself, even if that meant cutting Ford..

-They have to keep Richardson. If that means keeping 5 RBs, so be it. He is having a great camp. He deserves a spot on this team especially since some of the running backs ahead of him have injury histories.

-Rontez Miles looked fantastic in the scrimmage. He's huge too for a safety, almost looked like a linebacker. I doubt they are going to be able to sneak him on the practice squad this year. I'd keep him and cut Jarrett. He has more potential and could play special teams.

-Jeremiah George the rookie LB looks too small. He also hasn't been great out there.Reilly the UDFA looks better overall. I understand they ultimately play different positions outside vs. inside, but in roster construction they are the same as you can only keep so many LBs. I think there is a good chance George gets cut for Reilly, but maybe not.

I don't think you can cut a guy you spent a 4th round pick on. Evans will make this team. The talent is there, he just needs time and missing OTAs for a completely legit reason is going to work in his favor. I think Ford gets cut in favor of Evans.

Decker, Hill, Kerley, Nelson, Saunders, Shaq, Salas.

I'm not even going to try and predict the 53-man right now. WR is just a really interesting area ofthis team.

    Thoughts:

    1. I don't see anyway Saunders and Ford BOTH stay on the roster. That cut will keep Greg Salas on the team. He's had an excellent off-season. I think Jacoby Ford goes.

    My 6 receivers.

WR - Decker, Nelson, Kerley, Saunders, Salas, Evans

    2. Rontez Miles should be the 4th safety on the depth chart over Jarrett.

    3. I wouldn't mind the Jets going with 2 QBs on the roster to start the year. They should let Simms walk and have Boyd on the practice squad. It's a gamble but then you can dedicate that roster spot to someone of use.

    4. Shaq Evans has been struggling - he may need to redshirt this year, but they should put him on the IR - not the practice squad. If he shows something keep him on the roster.

    5. Idzik won't cut his draft picks. Think of that when the roster gets trimmed.

Idzik shouldn't make the decision regarding cutting his draft picks. In this instance, the decision should come from Rex and his staff.

Also, I don't know why you say he wouldn't cut his draft picks anyway. By all indications he's a big competition guy. If he's going to preach that he's probably going to stay consistent with that in choosing who stays and who goes. Not only that he selected 12 players, including 9 of them after round 3. It would be unrealistic for him to think he wouldn't cut some of them.

Regarding Shaq Evans - can you put a guy on the IR who isn't hurt, just to stash him? I'm not being a smart ass, it's a legitimate question of mine because I see a lot of people saying they should throw Evans and/or Inunwa on the IR and it seems like that wouldn't be allowed if they aren't hurt.

Also, another question for everyone. Is Simms ineligible for the practice squad? I wouldn't mind keeping only 2 QBs on the active roster to start the year with one on the PS, but I'd rather the one on the PS be Simms instead of Boyd. But I am not sure if that is possible...
