I've said it once, I will say it again....there is NO WAY the Jets will draft a TE at #4. This guy may be great, but there are waaaay too many other holes in this team. If anything, I think there is a chance they may trade down.
Vernon Davis at #4 would be a risky move, IMO. I like Tannenbaum and Mangini, but I think it's more plausible to believe that they'll make a safer pick ala D'Brick, AJ Hawk, or Mario Williams (if he's still available). Out of those 3, D'Brick might be the one to drop, since I don't see the FO taking an OL so high. Mario Williams will probably be gone by then, so I'm thinking it's either gotta be AJ Hawk or trading down.
I don't think that being a workout warrior is a bad thing for a TE anyway, Gates became the #1 TE not because of what he did on the field but his potential and workouts, Gonzalez was a basketball player as well, I think that the TE position is moving toward getting the most athletic player instead of what they did in college. Although along with his physical ability Davis has shown to be a great TE on the field in college.
I'm starting to think Davis will be the pick, too. Assuming Leinart, Williams, and Bush are gone.... Reason 1: He's the best tight end prospect maybe ever. Tight end? Yes. I'm not in love with the idea of taking a tight end, but if this guy lives up to the Gonzalez/Gates billing, he's worth the pick easily. Reason 2: D'Brick is flawed. Not a stud run blocker, and we can get a very nice RT at 29, 35, or maybe even our 3rd rounder. Reason 3: We don't need AJ Hawk. Sorry. Our linebackers are fine. Our defense is fine, except for the pass rush, and that's not what AJ would be doing. Reason 4: Young and Cutler aren't worth the 4th pick. Reason 5: I think the FO believes we have enough high round picks to trade down and get someone else, so I think that those are the guys they'd choose from, and Davis is the choice. Reason 6: Schottenheimer's used to having a star tight end, so Davis would fill that bill for sure.
I agree that Brick has room to improve as far as his runblocking goes, but he has the potential to be one of the best pass blockers in the NFL... If he winds up being a top 3-5 pass blocker and only a top 10-15 run blocker I am ok with that. We need to protect our QB!!
Great Great point right here. If he was the best prospect in the last 20 years we would have known a lot more about him prior to the season and prior to the combine. There are two picks that I will be furious with on draft day if we stay at the four spot. CUTLER and DAVIS. Any other pick at all of the top six or seven guys I can live with. I might not be thrilled to see one or two of them but Ill deal with it. But these two guys just do not add up to top five talent IMO. Even though Davis was productive I still see him as somewhat of a workout warriror, and with Cutler I would much rather take a proven winenr at QB then a guy who had an average career
Not really. He played for Maryland. You want to name me one other player on Maryland? Right, you can't. I heard a lot about Davis during the year, so I also don't know what college football you're watching. Did you know who Todd Heap was in college? Or 75% of the first day tight ends in the last 5 years?
I once heard a GM give his philosophy on the draft, and I agreed with it. In Round 1, you take the guy with the highest floor. In the other rounds you take the guy with the highest ceilings. I'm definitely in the Cutler camp, but I have pretty much come full circle and agreeing with the above philosophy, given its Tangini's first draft. I believe we will/hould go with the player with the highest floor at #4, and that player is most likely to be Ferguson. You can't really question drafting your LT for the next 10 years. A boring pick? Definitely. However, he's relatively low risk, high reward.
Davis has the best hands in the draft, not just among TEs. I hope we take him at #4 but I don't see them doing it
