Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the Quarterback situation as we prepare for next season. As Jets fans it we haven't had stability at the position in a long time and I'm afraid we are not going to be able to find it this offseason, unless Petty or Hack emerges. Lets keep this post completely away from the draft. I don't feel that there is a Quarterback worth taking inside the top 5 and especially not for us as we have so many other holes to fill on the roster. So with drafting a Quarterback out of the question we do not have many options out there. Out of the following options lets see what the majority of us think/want! Ryan Fitzpatrick He's without a doubt gone. Projection: Jaguars (will compete with Bortles) Geno Smith I would say he is on his way out as well. Projection: Backup Elsewhere Bryce Petty I'm rooting for him, he is showing progress each week, but I really do not think he is the long term Quarterback for us. I could see him being the opening day starter in 2017 though. Christian Hackenberg Let me say this, I am not an NFL scout by at means but I do know football and I can read players pretty well. I am a season ticket holder for PSU as I live 25miles from campus, I never missed a game of Hackenbergs. I was praying this scenario never happened. I never wanted to see him in New York.. The kid is really really bad IMO I am baffled by what scouts seen with him and to grade him at a 2nd round level ill never understand. I was hoping we would use that pick or wait until the 3rd round and snag Connor Cook. Cook is way more ready than Hack will ever be but he will be wasting away sitting behind Derek Carr. I look for Cook to be successful in this league kind of take the same path cousins took coming out of Michigan State. Tony Romo Personally I want absolutely no part in this. I could see Romo going to either Arizona or Denver. Which brings me to my next quarterback. Projection: Broncos Trevor Siemian If Romo ends up in Denver, Siemian will be trade bait. He doesn't really excite me but he's someone to keep an eye on. Macagnan likes to trade. Projection: Bears Jay Cutler We all know about Jay Cutler. I honestly see him ending up in Arizona, I think he would to well in Arians offense. I'm not completely against Cutler coming to New York (I would take him over Romo) I think Cutler needs a fresh start however we do not have an Adam Gase or another Quarterback guru on this coaching staff so ultimately I think Cutler would fail with the Jets. Projection: Cardinals Mike Glennon A lot of people say "If Glennon was so great why would the Bucs draft Winston" Well let me tell you something Glennon does NOT have the skill set Winston has. You do not pass up on a talent like Winston and the Bucs didn't. I think Glennon would be a serviceable option, we would have to drastically change our offense to Glennons style of play. (Shouldn't be a big deal considering Gailey is a goner after this season) IMO Glennon is going to get an insane offer somewhere and I don't feel like the risk is worth the reward. Projection: Bills Brian Hoyer I like Hoyer but I don't love him. With an elite defense and some weapons on offense he could lead us to the Playoffs but not much more. If the coaching staff is leaning on Petty being the starter I like bringing Hoyer in to at least make Bryce work hard and give him some competition. If Petty prevails then we have one of the better backups in the league. Projection: Bears Colin Kaepernick NO THANKS Projection: Backup Elsewhere Tyrod Taylor If Taylor becomes available (which he will) New York needs to take this into serious consideration. We all know that Quarterbacks fail under the Rex Ryan coaching staff. Taylor managed to do pretty well with no weapons at that. The only true weapons he had were McCoy, and Watkins when healthy. We have a much better group of guys to throw the ball to. Taylor manages the game well and doesn't turn the ball over. (something we need in a Quarterback) If Taylor is cheap enough then this is a no brainer. He can still compete with Petty (Taylor will win) and if he doesn't work out then at least there isn't a lot of money invested. I think for the price tag of the others Taylor will be the safest bet. Projection: New York Jets Needless to say no matter who the opening day starter is there are many holes to fill and the offensive line needs some serous work.
Let Petty finish playing out the season before we talk about next year. If Petty looks like either a solid starter or a reliable backup we have something to build on. Even if he looks horrible there us hope for him as long as he can avoid excessive turnovers. Otherwise, if every INT is a pick six we may as well call him Geno II.
Good write-up. I've been saying the same thing about Hack since the day he was drafted. He's awful. Tyrod Taylor is not a bad option. He's grown on me a bit and panned out better than I ever thought he would as a pro.
I'm not saying Tyrod is a franchise quarterback, I'm saying he's going to be cheaper than most on that list and he could excel with what we have here in New York. Look at the guys production under Rex Ryan, If were bringing someone to compete with Petty, I would prefer Taylor. He has more upside than Hoyer. If we sign Cutler, Romo, Glennon etc. Its not a competition anymore. They are basically handed the starting job. I want Taylor if hes cheap which I think he will be. If we have to spend big money to get him here then pass.
Were you feeling the same about hack after his freshman year when he finished with a 2-1 TD-int ratio running a pro-style offense?? He had an excellent pro-day and the jets spent a lot of time with him. He may be a bust, but until he actually throws a pass in an NFL game, hard to say.
The Jets have a much better group to throw to then the Bills??? Watkins is better by far then anyone the Jets have and Woods is decent too. They also have a better TE in Clay and McCoy is better by far then Powell/Forte combo. The Bills have plenty of weapons and if it wasn't for Watkins being hurt all year, he would have better numbers. I still would rather the Jets pass on him though. Running Qbs don't last long unless your name is Mike Vick.
If the Bills actually cut a dual threat, strong armed QB who has 44 total TDs to 15 turnovers in 2 seasons with them I would laugh in their faces and sign the deal. I think he's easily our best (realistic) option for next year. Have you seen how accurate his deep ball is? He would FEAST with Robby Anderson. Who else would you want?
The reasons for taking Hack are: an arm to throw in the NY winds, the mental makeup of a NFL QB, and the stomach to handle playing in NY. Not a single one of those characteristics can be taught.
Let's say this. I thought the kid had potential and I had hope for him. Watch the tape of his freshman year. He was extremely raw. Which is completely understandable for a freshman. But he only got worse each year. I know the staff and oline was a big issue. But the instincts just vanished. Not looking at his stats at all. Hack regressed tremendously over the years in all areas. Decision making, footwork, motions, and more importantly attitude.
90% of the time Watkins is hurt. If he wasn't Taylor would look much better. But you can't tell me that Enunwa, Anderson, Marshall, Decker. Isn't a step above what the Bills have. Think of the Marsh/Decker we had in 2015. We cannot say that those to aren't viable weapons based on this season. Decker obviously has been out and Marshall has been plagued by poor quarterback play. (Yes Marshall has left a lot on the table this year) but if he had consistent quarterback play right now and we were In the playoff hunt we'd be seeing the 2015 Marshall on Sunday
What do we think about Cousins. God only knows if Washington will put up the bid money it's going to take to sign him. Maybe they franchise him again, but if not are you interested? I think he's a middle of the road starter. He obviously not Brady or Rodgers. But IMO he's on the same level as Stafford and Flaco. Any takers ?
If this organization signs Taylor, that will be the final straw, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did
Marshall of last year sure but the guy is washed up now. The Marshall of now is a step slower this year and his effort is terrible. You see the same shit with Revis. Around their age, you can see a big drop off in a quick time frame as you're seeing now. Now Marshall will be a year older next year and I don't feel he is worth bringing back. Anderson shows some promise but still an unknown, and Enunwa has been a surprise and could be solid sure but these guys don't have the talent and potential the Bills have. As far as Watkins, he has only missed 3 out of 32 games before this year. A far stretch to act like the guy is a walking injury due to this year.
If Cousins was available and we could get him at a decent price we absolutely should take him. He's the definition of a QB who developed and made a place for himself in this league. He's constantly improving and I believe he's slowly becoming a QB who you can count on to win you some games.
