Game 1: Wakefield v. Pettitte Game 2: Byrd v. Ponson Game 3: Lester v. Mussina (most interesting game) I'd be so bold as to say the Yanks will take game 1. Who knows which Ponson we'll get and who knows what Byrd will bring to the table, I'd say game 2 will be high scoring. Game 3 will be tough to win, Yanks have struggled with Lester all season and the Red Sox do well against Mussina. 2 of 3 Yanks.
Sox sweep. I have absolutely no faith in The Yanks in a big series...and I'm still in "Boston wins everything" misery mode, and am convinced theyll strut to another easy WS title.
Depends on Wakefield. If he comes back from the DL throwing like he has most of the year, I see the Sox taking 2 of 3, MAYBE a sweep, but only because Byrd/Ponson is a wash. If Wake struggles, I think the only game they win is the Lester/Mussina game.
Game 1 is huge, we finally have a little momentum going and we at worst need to take this series so let's not put more pressure on and lose Game 1.
I want a sweep. If not then I want us to be the spoilers and knock Boston out of the playoffs between now and the end of the season. They are certainly no lock.
I didn't realize Sox fans were concerned about this until this past weekend. My roommates from college from Boston were worried if they would even make the playoffs.
Honestly, I'm thinking the playoffs shake out as follows: 1) Angels 2) Rays 3) White Sox WC) Twins The Angels are going to win the whole thing though, especially after they beat the best team ever in the ALCS.
yanks need 2/3.. which even then, only move 4 back of boston.. a sweep would be absolutey great.. but if the sawx take 2/3 season is over basically.. game 1, yanks have advantage.. pettitte in august is insane.. game 2, who knows.. byrd pitched well vs. yanks last year.. ponson is eratic vs. good teams game 3, lester got beat down his last start, buit other then that has been pitching well, and moose ya never know.. yanks sweep
Essentially repeated what I said, with the exception of sweep. The yanks have proven they don't show up for big series, and this qualifies as a big one, I'd say they lose the game they should lose, the 3rd and pull out the others.
Game 1: Yankees always kill Wakefield, so game one to the yankees Game 2: Byrd & Ponson... could go either way, depends on which pen does damage control better. Game 3: Mussina vs Lester. Lester has given the yankees fits all season and Mussina has been very strong this year. Again, could go either way, depends on which moose comes to play and if the yankees can finally hit lester Could be 2/3 either way, but I don't see a sweep from either team
We haven't faced the Mannyless Sox yet. Lowell is on the DL still. Lowrie plays 3rd bag. Wakefield is fresh off the DL, Beckett is on the DL....I mean the Yanks have all the things aligned in their favor. Now it's time to muscle up. As up and down as this season has been they can tip the scales to a positive if they play well in this series.
jd drew will most likely be out as well.. sports hernia i think. or a herniated disk.. red sux said they dont know if they should send them to DL or not
Great article for what will be the Red Sux last trip to the stadium ever. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/26/sports/baseball/26anderson.html?_r=1&ref=baseball&oref=slogin Just a sample: When Roger Maris hit his 61st home run, breaking the Babe’s season record, on Oct. 1, 1961, the pitcher was the Red Sox right-hander Tracy Stallard. When the left-hander Dave Righetti pitched a 4-0 no-hitter on July 4, 1983, it was against the Red Sox. When the right-hander Allie Reynolds was trying to complete an 8-0 no-hitter on Sept. 28, 1951, the most renowned Red Sox hitter of all, Ted Williams, lifted a pop foul near the first-base line for what would be the final out. Reynolds hurried to where Yogi Berra was waiting to catch it. Oops, the ball popped out of Berra’s glove. Berra walked to the mound and talked to Reynolds, who threw another fastball to Williams, who lifted an almost identical foul ball that Berra camped under and caught for the no-hitter. What had they discussed at the mound after the dropped foul? “I told him, ‘Hey, you stepped on my foot,’ ” Yogi has often recalled. When Don Mattingly hit a season-record sixth grand slam, on Sept. 29, 1987, the pitcher was the Red Sox left-hander Bruce Hurst. When Derek Jeter dived head-first into the box seats along the left-field line to snare a pop foul on July 1, 2004, he stifled a 12th-inning Red Sox rally before the Yankees won, 5-4, in the 13th. The Red Sox have had Yankee Stadium moments, too. During the 1937 season, Jimmie Foxx, their muscular first baseman, launched a towering home run against Lefty Gomez into the upper deck in left field. “I don’t know how far it went,” Gomez said, “but I do know it took somebody 45 minutes to go up there and get it back.”
Not a fan of these pitching matchups. Spanks could easily take 2 of 3. Tonight's game, as most when Wakey pitches will be decided by the 3rd inning.
For some reason I'm not excited about this series at all. It doesn't have the luster of most Sox/Yanks series, I'm not sure why.
That's a lot like I feel. Honestly, I think it has a lot to do with us both being banged up, and neither of us contending for first place. Hell, we're both struggling to stay alive in the wild card race. It's just not where either of us should be at the end of the life of Yankee Stadium, much less this year. Not to mention certain faces from recent rival history not being around. Namely Manny and Joba. Beckett's out too, isn't he? It just doesn't feel like September (close enough) baseball between these two teams.
