I was just wondering if you guys think the jets are gonna retire the number 80 now that chrebet is retired...we haven't reitred many numbers in the past though we havent had many players worthy of that honor either to be fair

I really hope they are not dumb enough to listen to most of the fans in regards to this.

That may be true but we have at least a dozen that deserve the honor ahead of Chrebet including at least 3 WR's.

Definitely not. Chrebet is more of a folk hero than anything else, and the Jets have high standards for retiring numbers.

Had the Jets advances and won the 98 Super Bowl, you could consider it. But without a Pro Bowl or the jewelry, Chrebet won't get hung on the wall.

You'd have to consider Wesley Walker, Rich Caster and G Sour Jr. before him.

I would throw Toon in and Caster out. Caster was a terrible WR who was a product of Joe Namath's supreme confidence.

The guy was huge and could run like a dear. Namath couldn't help himself, he threw bombs to him at every opportunity. Caster had as many balls hit him in the face, body and hands and bounce off him as he cought. Any other QB would have stopped throwing the ball to him.

First of all, I don't think any numbers should be retired. Instead, there should be a wall or ring of honor with names and not numbers. As for Chrebet, even though he was one of my favorite Jets of all time, there are many who deserve the honor if he gets it - including Walker, Toon, Shuler, McNeil, Powell, Fields, Philbin, Hill, Mehl, Leahy, etc.

If the Jets retire 80 immediately, maybe they can coax Jerry Rice out of retirement.

    and
    28 once Martin retires.

That's it. No more. No ex-Jet should be considered. Hopefully Vilma and Ferguson will play well enough that they would get considered someday.

    NO.

You only retire #s of Hall of Famers. That's my opinion, I know it's not most team's opinions.

J.V. Cain, Brian Piccolo, Mack Lee Hill, Jerome Brown, and Chuck Hughes had their numbers retired.
Pat Tillman's # is now retired.
Ernie Davis' number is retired and he never played a game in the NFL.
As for non-death related number retirements-
The Seahawks retired 12 for the fans.
The Seahawks retired 80 and then "unretired" it for Jerry Rice. What was the point of retiring Largent's number? Dumbass franchise.

I think the whole thing is overrated. I like the Cowboys and Raiders idea of not retiring numbers.
