http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/01/24/jets-add-more-coaches/ I am OK with hiring friends or old colleagues because of the familiarity and such as long as they are productive.
i'm only worried about the fact that everybody he is hiring has no experience at their positions. Rex has never been a head coach and Petini has never been a DC. i mean i'm happy and excited about both, just something that could be a problem. But it can't be worse than Mangini and Sutton
Neither did anybody that Mangini hired or Edwards before him. That's always the problem with hiring first time head coaches. The only people that will work for them are others with no experience too.
Ryan will be calling the defense on gameday. It sounds like Petini is basically just going to be his assistant - running the defensive practice, helping with films, seeing things from the booth and helping with adjustments. From what I've read they had a very good working relationship in Baltimore and there's no reason that shouldn't continue here. I think he had to get a promotion to DC in order to make the move, a lateral move could have been blocked.
Apparently Rex had this figured out from the jump. He and Pettine have a good coaching relationship, and Rex trusts him. This should work out just fine
this was posted there After all those layoffss, they keep hiring more coaches… .. here is how it went down To: All Employees From: Human Resources RE: Layoffs As a result of the reduction of money for department areas, we are forced to cut down on our number of personnel. Under this plan, older employees will be asked to go on early retirement, thus permitting the retention of the younger people who represent our future. Therefore, a program to phase out older personnel by the end of the current fiscal year, via retirement, will be placed into effect immediately. This program will be known as SLAP (Sever Late-Aged Personnel). Employees who are SLAPPED will be given the opportunity to look for jobs outside the company. SLAPPED employees can request a review of their employment records before actual retirement takes place. This phase of the program is called SCREW (Survey of Capabilities of Retired Early Workers). All employees who have been SLAPPED or SCREWED may file an appeal with the upper management. This is called SHAFT (Study by Higher Authority Following Termination). Under the terms of the new policy, an employee may be SLAPPED once, SCREWED twice, but may be SHAFTED as many times as the company deems appropriate. If an employee follows the above procedures, he/she will be entitled to get HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel’s Early Severance) or CLAP (Combined Lump sum Assistance Payment) unless he/she already has AIDS (Additional Income From Dependents or Spouse). After getting HERPES or CLAP employee’s will no longer be SLAPPED or SCREWED by the company. Management wishes to assure the younger employees who remain on board that the company will continue its policy of training employees through our Special High Intensity Training (SHIT). This company takes pride in the amount of SHIT our employees receive. We have given our employees more SHIT than any company in this area. If any employee feels they do not receive enough SHIT on the job, see your immediate supervisor. YOUR SUPERVISOR IS SPECIALLY TRAINED TO MAKE SURE YOU RECEIVE ALL THE SHIT YOU CAN STAND. H. R. Helps if you post the story. Head coach Rex Ryan continues to round up more coaches for his staff. On Saturday, the team announced the addition of defensive quality control assistant Jim O’Neil and defensive assistant Jeff Weeks. O’Neil played high school football in Philadelphia, where Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine was an assistant coach. Most recently, O’Neil spent the past three seasons as recruiting coordinator and safeties coach at Eastern Michigan. Weeks worked with Rex Ryan’s brother, Rob, as a defensive assistant in Oakland last season. Weeks also worked with Rex Ryan at Morehead State in 1990-91 and at Oklahoma in 1998. Weeks also was a college roommate and teammate of Rex and Rob Ryan at Southwest Oklahoma State. So, basically, when football coaches aren’t making hiring decisions based on nepotism, they’re giving jobs to their friends.
I hope REx dosn't think that they'll be a great coaching staf because they all get along. 'Cause that don't work.
Yep, that's what I was gonna say too. Although Pettine has no DC experience, there will be input and decisions (regarding the D) from 2 guys. That compensates - especially because of Ryan's experience - for Pettine's lack of exp.
To some extent perhaps, if you are hiring people who do not have the skills to do the job they are being hired for, but just because they know someone doesn't mean that they don't have the skills for the job. In fact, I would say it is a positive from the perspective that it helps management cohesion to have people that you know and trust working with you, opposed to people you have to learn how to work with, and who in the end may not being truly supportive of you or what you are trying to accomplish. So long as who he brings in has the skills and experience to do their job I could care less who they are related to, know, or even blow for the job.
here is a secret about coaching staffs... you hire your friends. that is all. Do not tell me its anything more, because I know for a fact it isn't. Thank You.
Pettine gets promoted from a LB coach to first time DC. Rex Ryan was a D line coach that was promoted to DC and that worked out pretty well.
