Since the roster is somewhat established and the PS is forming, I think it's time to start posting all roster and PS moves here rather than in the Aug. 29 Cutdown day thread and/or the Official Cuts thread.
Found on another Jets fan site: Reported PS Signings Tim Boyle QB Zach Kuntz TE Caleb Johnson LB Trey Dean S Sam Eguavoen LB Adam Pankey, OL Craig James, CB Tanzel Smart, DT Nehemiah Shelton, CB Marquis Spencer Tyreque Jones, S Xazavian Valladay RB Marcelino McCrary-Ball, LB Jason Poe, LB Jalyn Holmes, DL All 15 signings confirmed by the Jets. 1 spot remains open. *** NOTE: Jason Poe is an OG, not a LB. Ron Swoboda filled the remaining PS spot. I guess that Bruce Hector and Pita Taumoepenu signed with someone else.
Doesn’t seem like we’re getting much OL help I think our biggest weakness and threat to our season is injury at the OT position, followed by injury to GW in the WR group (I didn’t say WR all in because if one of the other guys misses a couple games it’s one thing, but GW is what makes it special and if he misses time then I feel like our WR goes from pretty good/above average to pretty poor/below average)
I like this signing for PS. Very old 25 year old rookie he did have one decent game in preseason for the Lions, which is more than what we can say for some of our tackles, and he is big and athletic. However I wish the Jets claimed Connor Galvin from Detroit. Connor kind of flew under the radar, not very athletic guy, projected to struggle against NFL DEs, but he surprisingly played well in every game of preseason at LT. 3 very good games. And in College he was recognized one of the best lineman in Big 12 for last 3 years. Also, at 23 he is not that old. Seems like he just delivers results, in spite of poor athletic profile. He is now on Detroit PS.
If we can establish the run game. We’re pretty much unstoppable on offense. And it looks like that’s a real possibility, the run game will be hard to stop.
Laken still looks shaky to me in the run game. Remember that run attempt where we got stuffed right away for no gain with Rodgers as QB in preseason? Laken just got beat like a drum. Not sure what Brown can do either. I was also hoping Tipp would beat out CMG, but he didn't. So, perhaps most runs will be to the right where we have AVT and Becton. But I do hope Laken can do better and Brown is back to 2021 form. Then the running game would be good too.
I think you’re gonna see alot of PA left or draws, TE screens off the run game with AVT/Becton holding down the right side. Hardman misdirection sweeps gonna be wide open all day. Every team will have to respect Hall, Cook and Carter.
Here's some additional info from Heavy.com on the 4 newcomers to the PS who weren't in TC with the Jets. https://heavy.com/sports/new-york-jets/news-thomas-morstead-bawden-practice-squad/ Scouting New Jets Practice Squad Signings Tyreque Jones, Xazavian Valladay, Marcelino McCrary-Ball & Jason Poe The Jets chose to trim the fat off their preseason roster, cutting loose several members of the 2023 UDFA class — as well as a number of vets. In their place, you have recent signings like Shelton and Holmes, as well as four newcomers from outside the organization. If you’re interested in knowing a bit more about each addition, we’ve compiled some scouting below. Jones was an undrafted safety out of Boise State this spring. NFL Network draft expert Lance Zierlein described him as a “box safety featuring good size and closing speed but a lack of fluidity to hold up to man-coverage duties as a pro.” Weighing in at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, Jones “plays with good toughness and a willingness to mix it up near the line of scrimmage,” showing a capability in “short zone coverage or against certain in-line tight ends” — per Zierlein. One of his top assets is his “extreme length” with a wingspan of 81 and 1/8-inches. Valladay is another rookie UDFA who has already bounced from the Houston Texans to Pittsburgh, and then to New York. The ball-carrier has that trait in his DNA, scouted by Zierlein as a “bumper-car runner” that sometimes collides with his own blockers. His cons as an RB were lack of creativity and change of direction, while his pros were his “decisive mindset and his acceleration into contact.” Zierlein added that Valladay “will get what is blocked and keep the play on the designed track, but he doesn’t have the change of direction or instincts to create for himself when it’s not blocked up.” The final two fit the Robert Saleh and Douglas molds. McCrary-Ball is a former defensive back converted to linebacker (sound familiar?) known for his “tough, physical mentality” and ability as a blitzer. He’s a bit undersized for the NFL level (6-foot-0, 214 pounds), however, and his coverage skills could use some work if he’s ever going to cut it in the Jets’ system. As for Poe, The Athletic’s David Lombardi wrote a feature on him, highlighting his quickness, speed, top-level strength and versatility — all things Douglas covets in his offensive linemen. It appears the former Niner does his best work at guard and center, rather than tackle, but has the wherewithal to log snaps all over the blocking unit. Poe even played a bit of fullback in college, so that tells you all you need to know about his toughness and athleticism.
