Ryan wants to give Gholston more playing time Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 27, 2010 3:01 PM ET Rex Ryan spent all last offseason building up linebacker Vernon Gholston, only to be let down once the season started. But he's not giving up. Ryan said Gholston deserved more playing time. "When we are going back and looking at our cut ups and things like that, I think this young man deserves a better chance than we are giving him. We need to give him more playing time," Ryan said Saturday. So much for possibly releasing him. With that said, Ryan agreed with a statement that this was a make or break season for the sixth overall pick of the 2007 draft. "Generally by the third year, you got to see a guy really making strides and I expect Vernon to really make strides this year." Permalink 2 Comments Back to Top That was from PFT. Well..... We have atleast one more year of him. I hope he make it count.
part of me wants to cut gholston while we can without eating a cap hit... but part of me wants to see this guy on the field in that 3rd year with more playing time. rex is a very good evaluator of talent and i have faith in his decisions....if he felt this guy had NO chance i'm sure he would cut ties with him.. if gholston totally shits the bed we take a cap hit and have to deal with it. if he doesn't we have a piece to our defense that we haven't had to this point. Truthfully I want to see Gholston moved to back to DE. I think he has the most chance for success at that position and its the position that got him drafted so high in the first place. We have NO use for him as a LB anyway and we have a gaping hole at DE...it makes sense especially since we can rotate him with devito if we let douglas go which has been speculated.
So you're saying Gholston is a bust? Wow I thought his zero sacks and 3 special teams tackles in 2 years gave us reason for hope.
i have no prob with this... sanchez will have us 4 TD's in the lead most games, giving players like 'Ghost ample mop up duty time. plus 'Ghost should see 3 or 4 plays in each of our pre season games.
Rex did also say he liked the 3 QBs we have this time last year and then drafted Sanchez, I would wait and see what happens with this situation. Remember the Jets can still cut him on December 31, and it still falls under the uncapped year. I think that's one reason why they still want to give him more time.
He looks lost as an OLB, I say roid him up, have him gain 20-25 lbs to get him to the 285-290 range and have him play 3-4 DE. He's a pretty strong dude and I think this is the only way he could be a serviceable player at this point I hope I'm wrong tho
I'm ok with this. If he earns playing time, good for him, and if by some small miracle he actually shows something of substance, even better. It's not my $20 million they're going to be burning.
What exactly is more playing time going to do for Gholston? If Ryan is talking about giving him a new role to perform in the defense then maybe his performance will step up enough to make hm worth keeping on the field, but more playing time doing what he has been doing is just a waste of time in my opinion. Bryan Thomas was a waste of space on the roster for 4 years after he was drafted. Then Mangini brought the 3-4 in and Thomas moved to OLB and he was worth something to the defense. Gholston has been in two different 3-4's right now, primarily as an OLB and he has been a waste of space on the roster. If Ryan wants to get something out of him then he probably needs to move the Jets to a 4-3 and put Gholston at DE and see if he has what it takes to make an impact there. Obviously the Jets are probably much better off just to cut Gholston and move on.
I'll defer to the best defensive coach in football's opinion here. If he believes that Gholston can be productive with more playing time, who am I to say that Ryan's wrong? That said, I remain highly skeptical.
if rex says 'Ghost has earned the right to more play time, then quite obviously 'Ghost is being preped to be traded. Maybe we can do Mangina 'one more favor'!
Maybe we should tell him that as long as he gets a sack, he gets to play one more game. The first game he doesn't get a sack, gone.
REX: "Yes, i want to give Gholston a full time playing opportunity" REX: <coughs, then mumbles into his hand> "on another team"
I don't know if this is motivation for the turd, trade/release fodder, or just being said for shits and giggles. Who knows, maybe he actually sees something in Gholston. It'd be funny if he had a breakout year with 10 sacks.
Rex Ryan prior to the 2009 Draft said, "I firmly believe that we have the QB already on the roster." He's posturing. I'm not sure what for, but he's posturing.
Quick question for you contract experts: Would there be a significant difference in cutting Gholston now and cutting him week 12 next season when he still doesn't show us anything? Would the cap hit all be in the uncapped year still?
Possibly, but I can't imagine for what. We obviously aren't trading Gladys, so why would he bother building him up just to cut him down again? And he never said that about the QB situation.. he said he was "very comfortable" with the QBs they had. If Ryan is saying "I think this young man deserves a better chance than we are giving him. We need to give him more playing time,", and "I expect Vernon to really make strides this year.".. then cutting Gladys loose before he gave him the chance to "make strides" would make him a liar and an ass. No disrespect to the big man, of course.
