To discount the possibility of injuries because they happen all the time makes no sense. Injuries occur relative to the amount of time playing football; the more football a guy plays, the higher the chance he will get hurt. Practice more, play more games - get hurt more often. The exact opposite of a "false premise". Doing these contracts a year from now would statistically halve the odds of injuries occurring before the extensions kick in. That, I believe, outweighs the cost of any inflationary increase a year would incur. On the other hand, waiting two years for an extension might stretch patience too much and send the wrong message to the rest of the team. Regardless of what these two guys do in the next two years, or the following four, we'll have plenty to talk about.

They both are playing out these two years at the rate established in their rookie contracts.

You should quit shaking your head so much - it may be damaging something inside. First, your premise to rate these guys as 1a and 1b against only other players on the Jets is flawed - all players need to be compared to players on every team. Second, there is nothing I posted anywhere on this site that indicates I have a problem with the dollar values in these contracts. Third, it is extremely rare for contracts to increase by $5 - 10 million per year with most of them being cases like these in going from regulated rookie contracts to the open market. Fourth, I never advocated waiting until the last minute, which is over two years away. Save yourself from the head shaking and read what I wrote.

Call me when Sauce actually gets his uniform dirty... In lieu of that, maybe when Sauce actually picks off a pass. Until then, he's a Lamborghini in midtown traffic.

You're going to be waiting a long time for either of those. :D

I'm a little surprised Garrett got more than Sauce. Not 'falling down' surprised, just mildly. Sauce is a bit more dominant as a DB than Garrett a WR. Both have lots of room for improvement. Garrett with this rout running, Sauce with his INTs and Tackling.

Anyone else surprised over the difference in contracts?

Perhaps, but it is a good problem to have. This type of approach sure worked great for Roseman. And it is very encouraging to see Mooge trying to do something similar. Another example would be how he was able to get that 4th round comp pick for Reddick instead of wasting money (and the comp selection) for a washed up veteran like JD used to do. So far I really like Mooge's approach, starting with signing Fields as #1 FA target and most recently with the extensions.

So far, the only move that really does not make much sense is signing Stephens for the amount we did, but I think AG must really like him, and the jury is still out there.

Yeah…I like a lot of what Mougey has done, starting with drafting the OT in the first round and the TE in the second…the 3rd and 4th round picks to me were more questionable, but on the “slow” CB, I’m assuming AG wanted him and was on board, and on the “bad hands” WR, we’ll just have to see…not sure what to really make of that but again have to hope the coaching staff wanted this kid and at least he’s fast. Though I will say we’ve placed plenty of trust in our defensive HC coaching staffs and have been let down more often than not.

On Fields, I’m not a huge fan as I think great players don’t take long to show great, and he just hasn’t done it yet, but I’m hoping he can at least be mid-pack average…we’ll see. I like his ability to make plays with his legs…that’s a growing league trend and we just haven’t had that in forever, so that’s a plus. And as much as I’m not huge on Fields, I do agree that he was probably the best option for us this year.

The only other real criticism I have is that I would have loved to have been able to keep Reed opposite Saunce…I think he was a very good corner and paired with Sauce really well. I don’t know offhand what he ended up signing for, but I was disappointed that we didn’t really even try to keep him. But if that’s the cost of having to free up money to do the GW and Sauce extensions, then fine.

So for me, my initial take on Mougey’s approach is pretty positive I guess. Maybe a B rating? Keeping Reed and/or getting a better option at WR2 would have made it more of an A grade for me.

    But we’ll see
