    Oh, the whole offense sucks.

Oh, the whole defense besides the line sucks.

Yea, we know. Now let's talk about that other 1/3 of the team that no one pays attention to.

I saw some people complain about how bad our returners have been. Then we got Cribbs and people were psyched that we'd have a good return game. Guess what? We didn't. And it had nothing to do with the returners. Every single kickoff return, every single punt return, it's always a fair catch or they just take a knee in the endzone downing it. Why? I'll tell you why. Every single time someone tries to return a kick, they get hit almost immediately. The kick returner could catch the ball at the five yard line and they'll still never make it to the 20 before getting hit. How are we this far into the season and NO ONE on special teams knows how to block?

Fire whoever our special teams coordinator is. It's pretty obvious by the performance of special teams that the guy just stands there and collects a paycheck without putting any work in.

I still think that Joe McKnight should of been the returner from the beginning.

Perhaps he would have been if he didn't fumble the ball every time he touched it.

It's not 1/3 of the game, that's misleading and the old way of thinking about the game. Realistically special teams is much less important than 1/3 and its even less influential now that they've all but eliminated the kickoff return from the game.

I realize I'm saying this after the jets had a game with a big special teams blunder, but if a team can even just eliminate blunders on special teams then they become such a moot point in the overall scheme of things.

Good teams have good special teams because they have more overall depth. It's the bottom of the roster guys that play the teams. The Jets have paltry depth and the bottom of the roster is worse than any team in the league by far IMO. This is why the special teams has been poor overall this year, more than any poor coaching. Even then the fact of the matter is they've been able to make this a non factor because they haven't committed any big blunders. Today it caught up to them.

Bottom line, This team has far bigger problems than the special teams and the s.t. Coaching. The priorities should be put on building a much better roster top to bottom overall and in turn special teams will improve accordingly or won't even be a factor. They shouldn't think of it as 1/3 of a game because its not.

Remind me of how many times he's fumbled while returning the ball.

Looked it up. He's lost 3 fumbles in his career, and I know for a fact that at least one was while running the ball on offense. At the end of he day, he's near the top of the list in return average in NFL history. I would think that a guy with that resume is a better pick-up than Darius Reynaud. Hell I'd rather have Joe than Cribbs.

Not only are your stats wrong, but the dude was so good that he's out of the damn league.

You'd think one of the 32 teams might pick him up if he was worth a shit, but he isn't.

Maybe if we didn't have such terrible field position every time, it'd make things a lot easier for the offense.

Out of the 72 times our opponents have punted the ball, we've returned only 24 them (33.3%). Out of the 80 times we've punted, our opponents have returned 38 of them (47.5%). You can't tell me that those stats don't hurt the field position battle greatly. That's a lot of extra yards per game.

Quite obviously you don't get it.

It's the 'hidden' yards, as Parcells would put it. Punt return yards, and kickoff return yards matter. A lot. Now that kickoff return is that much less of an impact, but punt return still is the same impact play that it was before the new kickoff rule.

Of course, I do get it - Jets have some really serious roster issue. [Thanks, T-bomb. You fucked it up beyond redemption.] But that shouldn't result in such a discrepancy [33% return vs 48% return]

P.S. Today's Steelers game would be a good example.

1 Rushing TD, 1 Passing TD, and 1 Punt return TD. 21 point lead right there.

We're not losing games because of field position. That's so minor with this team. All things considered, sure I wish the special teams were solid, but this is like arguing the paint color on a home with a jacked up foundation.

Sorry Zach you can disagree with me, but its the truth. It's really not that important anymore.
The game has changed a lot since Parcells was in it. The kickoff return in particular. It almost makes more sense in today's game to just kneel it every time anyway.. If you follow advanced statistics and analytics like I do, this is like a main argument..

Was there a change in punt return plays as well?

If at all, peel back block is illegal now. This means the blockers must do a better job up front to secure the running lane. Jets ST are doing anything but that.

Seriously, 10 yard return equals one less first down you need to romp down the distance. Are you telling me that is not significant? Holy Jesus.

Special teams is very weak -- they need to bring in a legit kick returner and punt returner.

They also have weaknesses on the backend of their roster which is where you see some too many big returns against this team.

The Jets didn't activate Darius Reynauld today (he was signed after they put Cribbs on IR). I'm not sure why he wasn't suited up (was it an injury?). Instead they mostly used Kyle Wilson for kickoffs and punt returns (not Kerley). On the final one they used Cro. Now a days kick off returns are no big deal. The overwhelming kickoffs end up in the endzone anyways. And basically Wilson just took a knee. Also I think the Jets are afraid of backing Geno into the endzone. They know how disastrous that can be.So they played it ultra conservative today on STs except for the formation they used when the punt was blocked. Even Mike Westoff gave special teams an F foday because of that and he's very supportive of Rex and the ST coach who was a prortege of his.

They activated that guy from the practice squad with no NFL game experience and had him run a reverse and never used him again. I didn't get that either.

Punters are better, and They are calling holding and illegal blocks on punt returns at such a higher level league wide now that, that combined with the risks of a turnover are almost making the punt return risks of attempting a return higher than the actual possibility of gains...

Although this is slightly more important than kick offs returns, it's still so minor. Once again, it's like arguing something so small in the grand scheme of this teams problems. . Do I wish the special teams was better? Sure. But I don't think With all the issues this team has that Idzik should spend much time or resources trying to improve it.

This team is not losing because of 10 yards in field position. That's silly. It really is.
