Jets eyeing cornerback position and K-State QB in draft by Dave Hutchinson Friday February 20, 2009, 9:31 AM As the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis heats up, the early word is that the Jets are eyeing cornerback Vontae Davis (Illinois) and quarterback Josh Freeman (Kansas State) with their first-round pick (17th overall). USC linebackers Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews are also in the mix, especially with the release yesterday and linebackers David Bowens and Brad Kassell. Cornerback is one of the Jets' biggest needs and they may reach for or trade down for the likes of Alphonso Smith (Wake Forest) or D.J. Moore (Vanderbilt). They're expected to address the cornerback position in the first two rounds. Davis, 6-foot, 204 pounds, is a speedy three-year starter and two-time All Big-10 performer. The Jets desperately need a cornerback to start opposite Pro Bowler Darrelle Revis. Freeman, 6-foot-6, 250 pounds, is a big, strong-armed quarterback with loads of potential. Last season, he threw for 2,945 yards, 20 TDs and just eight INTs with a 136.48 passer rating for a 5-6 Jayhawks squad. He also rushed for 14 touchdowns.
I still believe Lowery can be the answer at corner with a decent pass rush, but maybe they want to try him at safety as some have suggested.
If the Jets don't take a CB or QB in the first round, it's a mistake. I'm glad their heads are on straight.
I think that depends on what we do in Free Agency. If we cut Ellis, we are going to need a DE too. I'm hoping Tanny will patch up as much as possible before the draft so we don't have to reach for a certain player just because of the position he plays
I'm not sold on Freeman. I think drafting a project QB with questionable consistency and accuracy when we have holes to fill on defense, promising QBs on the roster, and playoff hopes would be a mistake. I want a good QB, not a 'physically gifted' one. But for what it's worth, I don't watch much KSU football.
I hope they're not seriously looking at Freeman on the 17. He'd probably be an ok second round pick but the Jets need value on the 17 given their penchant for throwing away first round value recently. Sanchez is definitely a better prospect on that pick. Freeman looks like a poor man's Jamarcus Russell at this point and the original is not exactly tearing up the NFL.
Vontae Davis would be amazing. He is a physical freak. He has more ability than Malcolm Jenkins. He can be a shut down cover guy, but he also hits like a truck in run support. I also bet he runs in the 4.3's in Indy. He would be an outstanding addition. Also, to the writer, Freeman isn't a Jayhawk.
Regardless of whether Lowery is a starter or not, we would still need another CB. Who's behind him? I would have no problem taking Alphonso Smith at #17 if we can't trade down. This way we can move Lowery inside to the nickel spot or try him at safety. There are too many question marks with Freeman and I don't think I'd want him at #17.
How does something like this get published? Freeman doesn't play for the Kansas Jayhawks -- he plays for the Kansas State Wildcats.
Freeman would be awsome at QB, all im going to say is... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1Vog...eature=related
Sweet...a link that doesn't work - I'm guessing it's a highlight tape - that only shows the good plays he's made, not any of the horrible ones.
I think this is a smoke-screen - the Bucs, who pick two spots behind us, supposedly really want Freeman.
Freeman sits for 2 years and works on his footwork. He is not a cerebral game manager at all. he is the anti-Ryan. Sanchez is more of a game manager... really any other QB besides Freeman and Stafford fit that mold... odd. I'll take Smith as a #2 CB with Lowery progressing as a #3. Lowery is still a guy who can make plays. ILB to me is important, but if Scott comes here than Cushing won't be drafted.
Freeman will be a first round pick, I really hope we are not the team that gets seduced by his size and big arm while ignoring the weakness of his game. It Stafford or Sanchez or wait till next year as far as the QB position goes.
The Bucs, the Lions, the Bears, and the Vikings are all picking after the Jets. Which one of these teams will be scrambling to jump ahead of the pack for this sit-and-learn QB?
The Vikings are like our NFC twin.... just hangs around in mediocrity, teasing you of doing anything special. We are the better looking Twin thanks to Namath and crew. I think they and the Bucs may jump ahead... fine, but does that mean sanchez is falling?
From what I've been reading lately, the Lions are looking to draft a left tackle with the first overall pick - it will either be Eugene Monroe (UVA) or Jason Smith (Baylor). This means, if STL and KC don't take a QB, Sanchez will more than likely free fall into the mid-first. It will turn into a giant clusterfuck - one team is going to get a ton of picks - hopefully it will be the Jets: The Lions will have a ton of ammo to move up with their second first rounder (pick #20) and multiple picks in the third round. If they want to, they'll move up for a QB. The Vikings are looking to sign Jeff Garcia, who will only be a stop-gap QB. They want a sit-and-learn QB like Sanchez or Freeman. The Bucs new coaching staff wants a player to build their organization around. If they sign Haynesworth, he'll be their defensive guy, but they still lack a big time QB. What the hell is Luke McCown gonna do for a franchise? The Bears are the wildcard here. They might use this as a huge smoke screen or they might be in business to move up for a QB.
