Just pay the guy and move on , who else are they going to get in? June 04, 2007 Kendall wants what he can't have What is the answer to this Pete Kendall mess? He is currently holding out of the off-season program because he wants a raise. The Jets feel his current deal is just fine, for a soon-to-be 34-year-old player. Kendall is slated to make $1.7 million this season. You could make the claim that both sides have a solid argument. Free agent guards Derrick Dockery (Buffalo), Eric Steinbach (Cleveland) and Leonard Davis (Arizona) all received deals in the neighborhood of $49 million for seven years. These contracts have to be sticking in the craw of Kendall. These are good, not great players. Kendall played with Davis in Arizona, and he knows that the big fella is an Egg McMuffin away from 400 pounds, and an underachiever. Kendall knows he's not going to get $7 million, but he'd like at least a $1 million bump for 2007. Is that really going to break the Tannenbaum bank? The Jets are thinking just because other clubs overpaid guards in free agency, that is not their problem. Remember there are a few GM's in the league, including the Colts Bill Polian, who don't believe you break the bank on guards. Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini come from the Bill Parcells-Bill Belichick school of football. Can you remember the names of the guards who started on their Super Bowl teams? That's a tough one. With that being said, it doesn't look like Kendall is going to get a raise. So expect this stare down to continue for a few more months.http://blogs.msg.com/dan_leberfeld/
Cut Kendall. 280lbs lineman just dont cut it anymore. He is one of the reasons we cant run block because he is too small. Find a suitable replacement and get rid of Kendall.
Kendall had better be careful here- other teams might not hold him in the same regard that he holds himself in. I think that what we're seeing here is a FO which is comfortable with the present OL- including Kendall's replacement, and that they don't see the reason for us to overpay for an aging, somewhat slower, guard.
Totally agree...its not like the guy is breaking the bank or anything, he's better than anything else thats out there....he may be old but he's a trooper and we could use the line help.
I'd much rather take my chances on the young competition behind Kendall. tThey'd stand to save us money, add youth and potentially create an upgrade along the OL. Kendall is rapidly depleting and should NOT recieve an up in pay. Worst comes to worse, Clarke, Jones, bender and Smith all fail, and mid way through TC, we bring in a veteran.
Who?? I don't think Kendall is being unreasonable here. I understand he signed a contract, but the market has changed so dramatically over the last 2 years for guards that a lot of guys are getting big paychecks. Think of it this way, if you found out that a bunch of people at your job were getting paid way more than you and you knew damn well you were better at what you did than some of them, wouldn't you be a little upset and want some more money? He's 34, doesn't have a lot of years left and wants to make a little extra dough while he can. If we don't pay him, the market definitely will. I understand the whole precedence thing, but I believe that a reasonable argument can be made for an exception here. The guy isn't looking to break the bank, he just wants to be paid relatively close to what he'd get anywhere else. Give him his damn money, it's a relatively small amount he's asking for.
What did Kendall make in the previous two seasons? I think substantially more than the $1.7 million. That could also be playing a role in his unhappiness.
Thats all i'm saying...its not like the guy is horrible and we can always use the depth....i dont understand some pple....injurys are a bitch...we all should know that as JETS fans
I understand what you're saying but in this case I believe it's just being stubborn given the small amount he wants. Unless the FO believes they have someone as good or better, IMO they should pay him and move on.
1) It wouldn't be breaking the bank, not even close. 2) Honestly, how many people can name the guards from any superbowl teams?
34 years old, good player making 1.7 with 3 years left. They give in to him, you might as well tear up 1/2 the contracts. They need him, but they CAN NOT renegotiate or else its open season.
This guy is average and old. Plus he's the ONLY player on the team that's sitting out of OTAs, which makes him a shithead in my book. I know a million isn't a lot, but I have to agree with Champ on this one, it really is principle.
Maybe champ means they should go to the school principal to sort this out. After all, the principal is your pal.
And maybe it is to Pete, but seriouly he wants a payday becuase some other average slobs got one. If I walked up to my boss and demanded a raise becuase some of my peers got one, he would probably toss my ass out of the building.
Then someone else would pay you what you deserve. I've asked for (and received) raises because I was being paid under market value before. It's not a completely unreasonable thing to do.
