I spent a good part of the early evening watching the NFL Network and ESPN News. On both channels, their experts picked the Jets to go to the playoffs. Merrel Hoge, Hank Goldberg, Jamie Dukes, and Rod Woodson all are saying the Jets will be in the postseason. I really don't like this. I much prefer what happened in 2002 when no one believed until the Jets won the division. I am afraid that all of this bandwagon jumping is the kiss of death. TBTF
If you are afraid of people jumping the bandwagon turn on the Mike and Mad Dog show for about 5 minutes...
Oh and I should add, Goldberg said that Leon Washington and Brad Smith have been running the ball really well for New York. I assume he meant Houston. That's the other thing that bugs me. I don't think these guys know very much at all about the Jets and yet they are saying we are on the fast track to the post season. TBTF
I guess I could do that. On the other hand, I could turn on Mike & Mike and listen to Greenberg's unbiased opinion. TBTF
I don't really care what most of these 'experts' think since they are just part of a large corporate advertising engine anyway, but I watch the Mangini presser every single day and I watch them closely and I think Mangini is the real deal. I always had to bite my tongue watching a Herm presser whenever the fakeness started oozing out, the politician coming through. Mangini is genuine and he is truthful even when it appears he is being evasive of a writer's question. His philosophy is bred from success and his team as a group is showing a progressive improvement now that the season has progressed. I can't help getting excited for a possible playoff berth even when all the good sense in me speaks otherwise.
The end of what you said about the playoffs is exactly what I feel. I am excited about how far this team has come and about the chance to make the postseason. However, that was such an unreasonable expectation coming into the season that I am having trouble accepting it. A win this week would certainly help
I think Francesca really likes Mangini..Russo is a clown so thats irrelavant..Don't forget Mangini is one of Parcells boys from EM's first stint with the NYJ's. I think EM and Bill have a very good relationship as does Tannebaum and Parcells..Fancesca and Parcells are tight so I absolutly think Mike F is in the Jet corner...So many issues concerning Big Blue it makes for better radio..Jets just quietly go about their business, no complaining or throwing anyone under the bus..Besides the Jets making the playoff drive which is causing a stir in the NY media the world is all quiet in Hempstead which is how I like it.. focus on Buffalo and just play and win!!!
A Jets win this week will put them in the top 10 in all of the polls. Then we'll see the big divide in the "experts" between those who think the Jets are a mediocre team that caught breaks with a weak schedule and no major injuries and those who think the Jets are peaking at just the right time and a real threat in the playoffs. Two people I can call right off the bat are John Clayton and Ron Jaworski. Clayton will definitely be in the pretender camp and Jaws will have the Jets as a very dangerous team.

Well put, 'byz. When my father and I talk on the phone about the Jets, we're constantly trying to not get ahead of ourselves, but this season has made it difficult. I *don't* think that this Jets team is truly of playoff caliber, but the progress in the way that they go about their business is to me very clear, and that comes directly from the coaching staff. BTW, the reason that I say that this team is not truly playoff caliber is the schedule effect - the Jets are 1-4 against teams over .500 and 6-1 against teams under .500. In a "normal" schedule you would have roughly the same amount of games against each, but the Jets schedule is (of course) much easier than that this year. I see this team as an 8-8 or 9-7 team against a typical schedule, not quite at the playoff level. That doesn't bother me at all - I expected a lot more growing pains with a completely new coaching staff, reworked OL, retired HoF running back, etc., than we've seen.
What I want to know is, what happens to the experts when the Jets go put another Playoff shellacking on the Colts?
So then, Having only one more quality win than the Jets, does that mean New England is not a playoff caliber team? Against common opponents, excepting Chicago, we have faired similarly.... Including putting similar numbers against the same opponents, particularly Green Bay, Detroit, Miami, and a squeaker against Buffalo.
I guess it depends how you define playoff caliber. Looking at the NFL as a whole I'd put the Jets right around the #12 spot so from that standpoint you could say that they are a playoff caliber team. But since the AFC is so much stronger then the NFC this year I think you'd also be correct in saying that the Jets wouldn't have had a much of a shot at the playoffs in the AFC this year without the easy schedule.
yeah this always scaresme too. whenever the press starts to fall in love with us we seem to have adrop of f-- this week we will find out if this new jets regime has really changed te mindset of the plyer to focus on he task at hand an dnot look atthe end prize -- hopefully they take care of business!
Brad Smith's rushing stats: Att: 15 Yrds: 78 Avr: 5.2 FD: 9 Could have been a mistake on Greenberg's part but Smith has been effective in the ground game comming out of the backfield and on reverses.
There's another announcer who is surprisingly drinking green Kool-Aid. It's none other than Phil Simms. Has anyone heard him lately? He's a real believer... nothing but positive stuff coming out of him about the Jets.
I don't necessarily believe the whole "easy schedule" thing. If you (obviously) exclude their games against the Jets (on the basis of the head-to-head having no bearing on how hard the schedule is for the Jets), the Titans, Bills and Dolphins are 5-6, Green Bay and Houston 4-7 and Detroit 0-83. The Patriots are 8-2, Colts 9-2, Bears 9-2, Browns 3-9 and Jacksonville 6-5. That's a total of 60-61, potentially rising well over .500 before the season's end.
