Oakland? That was a big game, season riding on it and the Jets won for the first time in Oakland. Of course the stat was a bit skewed because the Raiders left Oakland from 1982-95 and the Jets only played there a handful of times. This week we're hearing a similar stat about the Jets having never won in Pittsburgh. Again, it's not like they play there that much, in fact they've visited every field in the AFC and more than half the ones in the NFC since the last time they played in Pittsburgh, when of course they lined up for the game-winning kick twice. They also went 11 years between visits from 1981 to 1992 and didn't go back again until 2001. Just some food for thought for when we get bombarded with that negative stat from now until game time. It doesn't matter, it's just one more thing for the talking heads to harp on. Go Jets! :jets:
To this day, the Jets have NEVER WON a single game in Alaska. Now that's just pathetic. Shotty must go!
Haha, good shit. To champ's point (putting that kindly), we rarely play in Philadelphia, either. The last time was 2003, before that it was the 70s, I want to say the end of the Lou Holtz year, 1976.
If it's a game that is played every year there's some validity to a stat like that, like New England beating us at Giants Stadium eight years in a row or whatever. But people cite stats like this Pittsburgh one as if it is the same thing, when most of the games referenced were played in the 1970s.
Well under the present schedule format we play in Philly once every 8 years & the same for Pitt except for when Pitt & us finish in the same slot in our divisions then we would play each other earlier then once every 4 years :jets:
Good call champ, but we've still played in Philadelphia only twice since 1976 and Pittsburgh a few times in 30 years. We're due to play in Philly next season.
Yep hopefully the game will be in Sept or Oct so I can visit my son & go to the game at the Linc BTW we must have played in Philly in 2003 :jets:
i don't think anybody was really saying that it had anything to do w/the upcoming game, but its still pretty cool to get a sense of the historical context of the game. For me i mainly remember the dreadful divisional playoff game in 2004 in which the score was tied 17 all and the Jets had 2 chances to win the game w/a FG in the final 2 minutes. Brien missed a 47yder and then the Jets picked off Rothlisberger's first pass and returned the ball to the Steelers 37. Then Herm played it ultra-conservatively - the Jets didn't move the ball closer and Brien missed a 43 ydr. That Really Sucked.
You can't visit him in November or December? We also play at Washington, another doable road game for a lot of people. Just saw your edit, we did play at Philadelphia in 2003, as I referenced, the only time since 1976. That was the game when Chad Pennington came back from his pre-season injury in the middle of the game. Vinny started and actually got us a lead on a bomb to Santana Moss, I always wondered why Herm switched QBs in the middle of a game when we were ahead. Either Chad was ready to go or he wasn't, he needed that last half hour to fully recover?
I do not know when the present format began but the year would be 1996 if the present format was in place at that time. Well the Linc is also not domed so I would pass up going to FB game in the NE in either late Nov or Dec or Jan. Certainly I can visit my son that time of the year but I usually do not fly that time of the year due to weather related connection problems between here & there that occur. As example last year we were late getting out of Philly so we late getting into our connection city & missed our connection & had to wait 13 hours for the next one. SWA canceled the non stop flight last summer:jets:
Bummer. The current format began in 2002 when the NFL added the Texans as the 32nd team and realigned into 8 4-team divisions, creating the chance to have a balanced, 8-year rotation. In 1996 the Jets hosted the Eagles and blew a 20-7 lead late, also hosted them in December 1987 (first "Joe Must Go" chants), October 1993 (Boomer INT to Eric Allen cost us the game) and October 2007 (debut of the horrible Titans uniforms), all losses.
How does that happen? Not quite. The schedule rotates among 4 NFC divisions and 3 AFC divisions. Thus, scheduled visits to NFC stadiums come every 8 years, while AFC stadiums come every 6. Except if you are the Patriots, in which case you play the Colts a lot for some reason...
Because they both keep winning their divisions, so the first place teams in conference all meet each other the following year.
Yep since it is most unlikely we will win the division again this year it appears right now next year we would be the 2nd place team & we will play the 2nd place team in the 2 AFC divisions we do not play next year :jets:
