The Jets Probably Won’t Be Able to Void Darrelle Revis’ Cap Hit No Matter What Happens by John B Feb 17, 2017, 7:03pm EST In the last day, much discussion has been focused on Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis for reasons that are understandable. He has been charged with multiple felonies. Questions have followed about how this could impact his contract situation. Revis has $6 million guaranteed for 2017. Could it now be in jeopardy? First of all, it is important to note how far away we are from that even being a viable possibility. Revis has been charged, but charges are accusations. Defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and we know none of the facts of what took place. Even if the case was to follow the scenario where the Jets could conceivably seek to recoup the money, it is very difficult to envision that actually happening. Darryl Slater looked into Revis’ contract and found it is theoretically possible depending upon the outcome of this case. The deal states Revis could be in default of his contract -- and have all of his 2017 guaranteed pay wiped out -- if he is "fined or suspended by the NFL or Club for Conduct Detrimental" or "fined or suspended for violation of the NFL Personal Conduct Policy" or "engages in personal conduct reasonably judged by Club to adversely affect or reflect on Club." In a practical sense, though, the timetable simply wouldn’t work for this to happen no matter the outcome of Revis’ legal matter. The league is unlikely to act until the case is resolved. Nobody knows the facts of the case so that last clause about personal conduct cannot be used until the facts are known. They probably won’t be known until later in the process. The process is unlikely to conclude before March 9, which is the first day of the league year. That is when teams can start using their salary cap space to sign free agents. Slater and Florio both note that if the Jets cut Revis, they would lose any right to recoup that $6 million. The Jets will almost certainly cut Revis before March 9, though. Doing so creates over $7 million in new cap space. If the Jets hold onto Revis past March 9, he still counts against the cap. That is $7 million and change the team cannot use to upgrade the roster. All of this would be to try and regain money when the team will have no idea whether it has a chance to regain it at all. I know people are going to focus on that last “engages in personal conduct” part, but there’s little chance the Jets will have the type of information they would theoretically need by March 9. And having him clogging the cap space by waiting for this to play out would be silly for a lot of reasons. The bottom line is the timeline doesn’t match up for the Jets to get that money back no matter what happens.
So we have to cut him before March 9th to get his base salary off the cap, but we're basically on the hook for his $6 million regardless? Am I reading that right? Or does it state that we might as well hold onto him and can void the base salary at any time after that deadline?
The former. We can only claim the $6mn back if the NFL take action. This is unlikely to happen as they'd probably take several months longer to deliberate. Assuming he doesn't retire, Revis will probably want $10mn from his next team so he can make his $16mn again (with the 6 from the Jets)
Not according to the original Star Ledger article that this GGN article was based on - http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20..._fight_charges_mean_f.html#incart_river_index. We have to cut him ON March 9. Before that it will put us over the cap ceiling for this season and he is due a $2m roster bonus on March 10. I remember reading that there is some offset language in the contract too but not sure if this helps if he is cut.
So true...especially when each State the player played a game in wants a cut of his game check for that week.
Lotsa people are rich, a lot of players are rich Some are fortunate enough to play in the NFL and extremely so for a SB win Revis made it clear early on he was NOT a team player (renamed Mevi$) and was pure mercenary...leaving Jets for hated Pats Yes I suppose many a guy on TGG fantasize playing pro football with millions myself included But cant you think of better players to envy? .....I know I can
That still keeps his check far above Joe 6-pack's week take. I'm sure his headaches are on a far different level than ours, but to paraphrase: "I've tried rich and I've tried poor. I like rich better.."
Jets get the first $6M Revis makes from another team next season due to the offset/recovery clause in his contract. It's one of the few things in the contract that was done right. I think Revis is going to retire anyway. I don't think he's likely to do any jail time off of the current charges but he's going to have to convince his next team that he will work very hard in order to get any kind of money out of them and that's going to be hard to do after last season's rollover.
What I saw last year was a player dis-interested in the game and comfortable with his place in history. A man that also happens to be wealthy beyond belief and couldn't take the criticism that his eroding skills brought on. I will be shocked if Revis, after he's cut, is willing to sign elsewhere and continue playing as a shell of his former self. On one hand, I believe he's still prideful that he can still play, but nothing he showed last season gives me reason to believe that he would fight to prove it...
There is no offset language in his contact , he never had any off field incidents so only the standard NFL language was included in his contract. Revis can be cut prior to march 9 as his accelerated cap hit for 2016 is $ 333,333.33. He is the only vet who's cap hit fits under the 2016 cap.
"leaving Jets for hated Pats" He was traded to TB. Gone after a year and the two suitors were either NE or NYJ, where the latter never made an offer and only Rex was talking about bringing him back. But whatever floats your boat, I guess.
I think this $333k is the remaining bit of a $1m signing bonus, which would, as you say, hit this year if we cut him. What my earlier post references is that the entire $6m guaranteed for 2017 would also hit this year if we cut him before the new league season starts on 9 March. That doesn't become dead money until we cut him and as it comes from the guy who runs Over the Cap I would think it is pretty reliable. We can't absorb that unless it is converted into a bonus and there's no incentive for Revis to agree to this. I've seen different things on the offset but, as Brad says above, I think that the guaranteed bit of his contract can be reclaimed if he signs elsewhere.
If Revis resigns, any money he receives comes off his $6 million guaranteed salary. The cap hit stays on the books for 2017 if he is cut ,now or March 9. Only the bonus is accelerated into the 2016 cap. Otherwise there would be no future cap hit for players released before their contact expires. Teams with cap space would all be releasing players early to free up all the cap for the upcoming FA market.
