OK, I haven't had a go at posting a new coach thread, so here goes. We obviously have to interview a minority candidate to comply with the NFL rules, so who are likely choices and what chance do they have of getting the gig? Last time around we gave incumbent DC Donnie Henderson a courtesy interview, fulfilling our obligation. Who now? Ron Rivera?
Will Frazier interview if he doesn't believe he's going to be realistically considered? Not to mention that this would delay any hire until the Vikings are eliminated...
Yeah, I believe he interviewed with the Dolphins last year even though one would think, looking back on it, that Parcells was going Sparano all the way. Also, the Vikes need not be eliminated for Frazier to be interviewed.
Does Ron Rivera fill the minority quota they are talking about or does the interviewee have to be black? I imagine they will look at some unknowns in these ranks. Afterall, this is usually just a formallity that teams must go through to comply. I believe if a team has a coach in mind they should be able to go after that coach. I don't know off hand but did the Colts have to interview a white candidate before hiring Dungy? Or the Chiefs with Herm? Racism can go both ways you know.
"Will Frazier interview if he doesn't believe he's going to be realistically considered?" Since it's one of those draconian cosmetic rules put into place by the league to give the impression they are being racially equal, I'm sure you can interview someone who doesn't even have a snowball's chance in hell of getting the job. It's all about appearances.
Romeo Crennel and James Lofton are other possibilities. No way the Jets would hire Crennel as HC, but they could interview him. If they want to go the darkhorse route, they could ask the University of Buffalo for permission to speak to Turner Gill. I don't know that Gill would want to coach an NFL team right now. He might be several years away from making the leap. It's worth consideration, though.
I understand why the rule was put into place but there are now quite a few African Americans in the league now. Quite honestly Frazier would be a good candidate regardless of what color he is.
If memory serves, the teams are required to interview a "minority" candidate. That's a pretty big umbrella so yeah, Rivera being Brown should qualify. That rule, while well intentioned, is perhaps the single dumbest thing ever approved by the owners. I dunno if minority candidates would have been given serious consideration without it though.
I was going to suggest Turner Gill. A Rooney interview, not a hire. It's a sentimental nomination, because I loved watching those Nebraska teams back in the day. Not suggesting he's anywhere near ready for the NFL, but the rule doesn't concern itself with such small matters as readiness. Good to see him doing well. I suspect his dream job is to someday migrate back to Nebraska.
Yeah, the rule is stupid, but you never know. I believe Mike Tomlin of the Steelers was also interviewed just to get the Rooney thing out of the way and they ended up hiring him
I don't like the wording of the rule because it clearly makes it out that teams are FORCED to speak to "Minorities" which is of course the truth...but if not for the rule...The Steelers might have hired Whisenhunt and I doubt our D would be as a good as it is. Tomlin really got these DBacks to improve.
I know it's not meant this way (at least i hope) but this thread comes off a little racist to me. When we interview a coach who happens to be a minority, it won't be because we HAVE to interview him and he has no shot. It means he's a legit contender. So enough with this will he interview if he knows he cant get it bullshit, because he can get it.
