Have I missed someone saying Mickey Shuler? Also, I love/loved Mawae, but Jim Sweeney was as solid a player as Mawae was.
If I had to win one game I'd rather have Chad. To build a franchise around based on their overall skills, I'd probably go with O'Brien.
Chrebet makes that team as the slot receiver. Maynard wide right and Toon at Flanker with Chrebet in the slot on passing downs. Keyshawn never had the impact that Chrebet did. He was a better receiver but he was not a more impactful one and he never had a run like Chrebets run out of the gate in 2000, where the Jets go 3-4 without Chrebet in the lineup and go 6-1 with him. The Jets lose to New England, Tampa Bay and Miami in that stretch with anybody else at WR and then win because Chrebet took them on his back at 5'8" tall and put the other team away in the 4th under nearly hopeless circumstances. Then the league started doubling him, probably the only time in NFL history a short slow guy got doubled by anybody for anything, and he came back to earth. But for 7 weeks he was the best WR I ever saw play for the Jets.
I'm not taking anything away from Chrebet, but if we're talking impact Keyshawn wins hands down. He was one of the major pieces in the turnaround of the franchise under Parcells. In every big spot as that team was trying to establish itself as a contender, Keyshawn made big plays for first downs or TDs. Since he was traded we have never been the same in the red zone. Chrebet had a lot of nice seasons, including 2000, be we didn't even make the playoffs that year.
We only made the playoffs in ONE year with Keyshawn. It may look like he was a big impactful player but other than 1998 he didn't get us anywhere special either. I was happy to see him go for the two firsts when he went. He was slowfooted and lousy at doing much with the ball after the catch and I have never been fond of the tall sloths who can pull anything down but have no escapability after the catch. Note that Tampa Bay got rid of him after they'd won a Super Bowl with him in the lineup and then Dallas got rid of him just as they were turning things around and AFTER Parcells had come into the building. Really good players don't wind up getting kicked off of good teams as often as Keyshawn did. Okay players do, and that's what Keyshawn was for his career: an acceptable alternative at wide receiver who did not have a huge impact when he played.
If the title of this thread was "Top 10 favorite Jets players" then Chrebet has got to make that list. But if we're talking "Top 10 Greatest Jets Players" then maybe the guys on this list ought to have gone to at least 1 Pro Bowl, no?
To be fair, his rookie year was with Kotite, 1997 we were in it to the last game and 1999 was Vinny's injury year, none of that his fault. His attitude caused him to move more than his ability, and he was a key part of a Super Bowl championship team. Not to mention how he played for us in the playoffs, one of the greatest games ever played by a Jet. We don't go from 1-15 to 9-7 to 12-4 without him, not even close. We probably could have done so with out Chrebet, at least a lot closer.
The thread was made for people to make their Top 10 Jets. Not to criticize mine. My Top 10 did involve favorites, no doubt. That does not mean another poster's has to.
Fair enough. Here are my top 10 1. Namath 2. Maynard 3. Klecko 4. Gastineau 5. Martin 6. Wesley Walker 7. Freeman McNeil 8. Kevin Mawae 9. Ken O'Brien 10. Mo Lewis
Not honoring the Championship player enough: 1) Joe Namath 2) Don Maynard 3) Joe Klecko 4) Curtis Martin 5) Winston Hill 6) Freeman Mcneil 7) Wesley Walker 8) Al Toom 9) Larry Grantham 10) Mark Gastineau Honarable Mention: George Sauer, Wayne Chrebet, Gerry Philbin, Marvin Powell, Lance Mehl, Glenn, Johnny Sample, Joe Fields, Kevin Mawae, Mo Lewis. Randy Rasmussen, Mickey Shular, Keyshawn Johnson, Victor Green, Marty Lyons, Pat Leahy, Darrell Ray, Bobby Jackson.
Damn, how could I forget Toon??!! One of my favorite Jets ever. Little footnote on Toon though - isn't he the guy we picked ahead of Jerry Rice??
Same draft but I don't remember who went first. Probably Toon because the Jets went 7-9 in 1984 and SF won the Super Bowl, unless they traded up that year. Might sound crazy but I don't think it was the wrong pick, both turned out to be great WRs.
Top 10 is tough but I'll give it a try 1. Joe Namath 2. Al Toon 3. Winston Hill 4. Curtis Martin 5. Joe Klecko 6. Mark Gastineau 7. George Sauer 8. Gerry Philbin 9. Freeman McNeil 10. Mo Lewis / Don Maynard - I just can't choose one over the other Just off Marty Lyons, Keyshawn Johnson, Wayne Chrebet, Marvin Powell, Larry Grantham, Aaron Glenn, Wesley Walker, Kevin Mawae and Art Powell
I certainly do. O'Brien only had one special season (1985). Otherwise, he was very mediocre. He was not a tough player. (Taking a lot of sacks does not necessarily make a QB tough.)
He played in one Pro Bowl and did so as a member of the Giants. The other John Elliott in Jets history was the better player. He was a 3-time Pro Bowler. He was a 1st team-All AFL defensive tackle in 1969. (Tombstone Jackson and Gerry Philbin were the 1st team ends that year. Buck Buchanan was the other 1st team tackle.)
Elliot and Philbin were two of the quickest DL in the league. Both of them were tremendous. Philbin was probably the best pass rusher off the edge who ever played for us and that includes Gastinue. Elliot was never as quick after his knee blew out in 1970. He was a special player.
1. Namath 2. Maynard 3. Klecko 4. Martin 5. Sauer 6. Riggins 7. Philbin 8. Toon 9. Mawae 10. Gastineau Honorable Mention: Wesley Walker, Winston Hill,Marvin Powell(VERY underrated) Larry Grantham, Joe Field, Lance Mehl,Bobby Jackson, Victor Green, Randy Rasmussen,Aaron Glenn and Mickey Shuler.
