I was scoping his stats. He's decent.... On 59 Punts last year, he averaged 43.6 yards. His long was 57. Not bad, obviously not astounding. He'll definitely be an upgrade over Hodges.
It was fast, I gotta' admit. To be honest I don't think Weatherford is a lock either. Just a hold over 'till the next best Punter becomes available.
Are the Jets the only team doing these things? Telling people they made the 53 man roster, then cutting them. Signing this guy, cut that guy a day later.
Games begin next week. All of the jockeying will be over by then. Until that time, if you are a fringe player on the Jets, don't lock yourself into a long lease on a place to live. They are just trying to improve the roster and I am all for it.
No, this is pretty much par for the course. I would have liked to see the Jets keep and develop Trapasso but whatever. If Weatherford is halfway decent then I'll be happy.
At this point good old Benny is still better than the trash we keep bringing in... I think the Jets need to start scouting New Zealand now for a punter so he can do the Haka before he punts to scare the crap out of the returner....
Weatherford was cut by the Saints last October after a horrible game (30 yards net average). Wouldn't it have been better to give Trapasso a shot?
Good punters don't grow on trees. But there's plenty of average punters, and it looks like we're going through all of them.
All teams do these things every single year. It's called 'shaping the final roster.' Last August we signed and cut Hank Poteat twice before the season started.
