Do we have any legit candidates on our squad to replace the boring, ineffective Justin Mcariens? I think this guy absolutely sucks. We need to find another good threat to start at wideout to compliment Coles. If we do, Coles could have a huge year. Do any of you have info on a potencial player currently on our roster?
Jerricho Cotchery has been impressive in spots, though many people I've read on this board seem to think he slightly overperformed in '05 and isn't suited to be an every down receiver. I'm with you, Al. I thought JMac blew it last year, with all those drops. But some seem to think Brooks Bollinger was at fault. I guess its hard to say whether BB missed his routes or JMac just didn't run them, unless you're in the huddle.
I would like Cotchery to start, but he doesn't have the height that JMac has. Cotchery seems to have decent hands and some speed, but he's small than Jmac
hopefully that guy will be Brad Smith down the line...however unlikely. As for this year we can hope that his struggles were a result of a severe calf injury he played with all year...however unlikely
It's strange, seemingly everybody on the team got a pass for last year except for McCariens (and obviously Herm.) JMac had a good '04 campaign and I'm willing to give him at least one more season before we delcare his career dead.
I think the #2 spot is wide open at the moment with McCareins, Cotchery and Smith battling it out. McCareins probably has the clear advantage with the most experience, but I'm sure Mangini will do what's best for the team. With Smith though, we could have our Randel El, but I don't know how much Mangini is going to risk with those type of plays.
I wouldn't mind seeing a FA receiver brought in to heat up the competition, if a young and decent one gets cut here during the Fat-Cutting Stage.
Well, there are definitely enough WRs on the team right now to generate some competition. I was angry at JMac last year, and I do blame him for the vast majority of those drops. He appeared extremely lazy on every play, and there is no excuse for that. However, it's all easily forgiven if he comes back this year and performs up to his contract. He was brought in to be more than a decent #2, and he hasn't really even done that yet. Smith is an interesting player. That slash-type play will probably earn him some minutes. Cotchery was underutilized, so it will be interesting to see what he can do. We also have a bunch of TEs. Hopefully one or more will emerge as receiving weapons, and take some of the heat off of the WRs. Just like the QB situation, I don't give a damn who is catching passes, as long as they do it, and help us win games. It's hard to hate winners, no matter what they did in the past.
I'm expecting a lot of two tightend sets, two receiver sets with a lot of rotating. We have one real threat, and a lot of decent players with different skill sets. The only player that should be in there consistantly on everydown is Coles. Other than that I want to see variety between the two tightend spots and the remaining receiver spot.
JMac only had a few good games down the stretch in 2004. To say his 2004 season was "good" is a reach and he was downright awful last year.
I'd say he was good, though certainly not great. Like I said before, we don't really have an alternative so I'm willing to give him another shot.
i really think that jmacs problems were one he was hurt 2 he was playin with bollinger for half the season and the rest of the season he was playin with a grandpa (who is my friends uncle by the way) and then chad who couldnt throw it 30yds (who remembers the pass that chad threw to maccareins that he wanted under for about 20 seconds)
Yup, that's exactly what happened in my madden franchise three years in a row. Then i traded him for a first, second, and third round pick.
Okay, so he couldn't catch up to Vinny's throws, and couldn't slow down enough to catch Chad's? Bolly, even though he was able to buy time rolling out of the pocket and throwing with a pretty decent velocity right at him was partially at fault? He was hurt so that made it hard to do his job? Here's an idea, how about blaming his rubber hands, and his outright laziness? Just a thought.
From what I'm hearing Brad Smith is struggling in his transition to WR. Having trouble off the line and such.
Yeah, split end is probably out for 2006, but he could play flanker. He also could play some QB on gadget plays.
We cant just go out replacing WR until we have a QB. J-Mac hasnt had a QB since hes been on the Jets. Once a guy emerges as the franchise QB and hes still dropping passes-then we can worry about someone replacing him because i can guarantee you that with the floaters that he is getting-no reciever is going to have a pro bowl year
