My pick is glen dorsey from lsu. hes a DT...6-2 315 lbs....i also like red bryant DT from texas A&M....6-5 328 lbs. either one of these guys can help boost the DL....maybe moving robertson to DE, or giving dsob some help in the middle as we *hopefully* switch to the 4-3.
1) Little bit too early with the draft talk IMO. 2) They are not switching back to the 4-3, they are staying with the hybrid. If they haven't yet, they're not going to. I think it was the plan all along to move away from the 4-3 and deal with the growing pains the transition would bring. 3) If it was up to me, and IF the Jets end up with a top 5 pick, I would trade down. There are too many holes to plug, they need more picks not less. Can't afford another draft like last year. And I would go DL and OL for the first 3 rounds (as for specific players, I am not sure, haven't looked at any prospects yet, but the Jets have to draft for need rather than BPA, at least IMO they do). *That is not taking into account any players they sign during free agency
I'd take a pass rushing OLB, and pick up Frank Okam from Texas, and Jason Shirley from Fresno later....(I know Shirley has had two Alcohol incidents, but he can play...)
I'd keep it and grap a stud. Everyone acts like we have a billion holes, but we went to the playoffs with a similar team last year. Switch the QBs and get some help on both lines and I think we're a very good team.
Personally i have always stood by my thoughts that great O-lineman can be had in the second and Third rounds, for the first round if we have a top 5 pick, that we do not trade away, we better be taking the BEST player in the draft, or we better be taking a monster DT/De we need a great NT and we have NO pass rush to speak of, not that I have really looked around yet being week 6 and all, but the two names at those spots that i've heard tossed around a lot, is Glenn Dorsey at DT, and Chris Long (howie's kid) all i have heard is that they are expected to be solid, but i haven't heard what system suits them best (4-3 or 3-4).
Trade down and use the first 2 picks on a RT and true 3-4 NT. It's way too early to name names, but that would have the biggest impact on this team. I'd try and trade Robertson too. Though he's playing out of position he's actually having a nice season. It doesn't change the fact that he's a bad fit for this defense though.
i'm in the trade-down camp, but who knows if there'll be any takers? if we can't trade down, I want McFadden. after that, we'd have 7 other picks we could dedicate to the OL and Front 7, not to mention Free Agency prior to the draft. getting McFadden first doesn't mean we can't devote the rest of the draft to the dire needs. just imagine Clemens pans out, Bender proves a starter, the OL improves, and McFadden is our RB of the future. wow.
I agree that is it much too early, and it is hard to name names and positions until the FA period ends. But I question the logic with McFadden. I understand he is a very good college player, but he is still unproven in the NFL. They just traded for Jones and gave him a fat contract. Washington is proving to be an absolute steal, fantastic return man and change of pace back (DEFINITE KEEPER). And Smith is a good option back. Problem is they are all running behind a shitty line. So you add McFadden, who is shown the door? Granted Smith is a WR. But if you add McFadden to Washington and Jones, that's a lot of money in one position. If he is there, a team hard-up for a RB will want to grab him, so I think you will have trading partners. That is the best direction, but I'm not a GM.
The line isn't shitty, the QB is. Jones got off to a fast start Sunday because the Eagles were playing like we had an arm at QB. When they corrected themselves and put 9 men in the box there was nowhere to run.
Yes, it is. It was ranked in the bottom of the league last year and it got worse in the run when Kendall left. The pass blocking is good because of Brick and Mangold. Clarke, Moore, and Clement would be backups on any playoff team in the league. Clement can only open gaps when he plants his feet, if he has to move he blows. Moore is only decent when he is playing on a good line, otherwise he can't open a run gap worth his life. Not that QB isn't a problem right now, but the Oline is not good, by any stretch of the imagination. Better than 3 weeks ago, but how could it not be.
I've been saying to my brother awhile now we are 5 positions away from being a good team. LG, RT, DT, DE, OLB. LG might be filled by CLarke or Bender, book is still open with them. Clement is the worst player on our line and needs to be fixed. Dline is far from being solid and we need a passrushing OLB. Thomas is playing ok, but we need a guy like Merrimen or Ware who can just put the pressure on every play. Vilma/Harris in the middle.
i guess i'm thinking more long-term than anything else. in my opinion, we're still not contenders next year and that's another year of tread on Jones. by the time we're ready to make a SB run, i think Jones will be on the decline. therefore, by drafting McFadden, we ease him into the League (allow him to adjust to NFL speed, etc), and all the while the OL continues improving, so by the time he comes in the OL will be set, along with (hopefully) the QB position. we keep Washington as a returner and Kevin Faulk-type back, and the Offensive pieces are in place for a SB run. that's my reasoning. not saying it's right, and it's definitely not immediate, but it if it goes accordingly, we'll have one of the better Offenses in the NFL.
I can definitely see that. I don't think we're contenders for the SB (playoffs maybe) next year either. And I agree with your reasoning. My thinking is salary cap. There are still a lot of holes that need to be filled. You have to pay McFadden top 5 money (while he develops the next couple years), pay Jones' contract, AND re-sign Washington in a couple years. That's a lot of money in one position. I like your thinking, but not sure how feasible it is.
You have to trade down IMO. I don't think that there is anyone in the top 5 that is going to immediately turn around this team. I think defense should be the priority. As it stands right now Okam is the only guy who looks like he can be a 3-4 NT, but he isn't worth a top 5 pick. If they trade down they can get Okam and then a 3-4 pass rusher as well with the extra pick or two.
