Just a quick poll and comparison between the two. So who do you like better going into the 2012 season?
Who would vote Coples at this point? It's not as though Wilkerson struggled allowing some to argue that any rookie has the potential to out-perform Wilkerson.
I expect that we'll see an improvement from Wilk. Think Coples might take some time to get acclimated. Might be close near the end of the season, but Mo has the better 2012.
What quantifies a "better season"? More sacks, more tackles, better victory at point of attack? I say Coples has more sacks, Wilk has more tackles and individual victories.
it is hard to distinguish what makes a better season. Wilkerson had a good season last year without any OTAs or off season program..i think that Big Wilkes will play a different role than coples --he is the sterotypical 3-4 End.. while Coples will probably be the most succesful working on the inside in different packages..I think we will push throw 4 guys down on the line more than normal because of the addition of coples.. Once the dust settles on the draft you have to sit back and look at the ceiling of what we could have on our D line--- we might be able to generate pressure sending 3 or 4 opposed to sending the house on scheme blitzes..in turn this could really help our secondary.. That all being said I am a big Wilkerson fan and thought it was a ballsy but great pick for us..regardless of what all the "analyst" say.. solidifying a D line that prduces constant pressure is crucial.. and you only have to look on the other side of town to see what good can come from it...
I think Coples has a season similar to Wilk's last year with maybe a couple more big plays like tackles for loss or sacks. Wilkerson with a year under his belt and his first full offseason should come out this year much improved and I'm excited to see him as well as seeing how our whole D line plays this season.
Wilk didn't have much help from his linemates last year (on passing downs). This year I think he will benefit a lot from having Coples out there to help draw some attention. And a guy in his 2nd year just understands more than a rookie.
Expect big things from Wilk this year. He played very well for a rookie, especially with no off season training.
Poll is spelled Poll. Big Q proves to be unstoppable and edges Wilk for QBHits, Passes Defended, sacks, strips. Wilk holds the edge in Recovered Fumbles, Tackles and Tackles for Loss.
This is not even a questionable decision. Mo didn't struggle last year, and I think he will reach his assumed potential in his career. He can hold the DE spot for a decade in NY. I don't doubt Coples either, but there is nothing that suggests he'll be a HoF in NFL. There's a probability he'll be a bust. But I don't think so. I think Coples will have a nice career in green. However, in 2012, Wilk is the obvious pick as we haven't seen anything from Coples in the NFL. Not even debatable.
I think Coples will come in and have an immediate impact.. Wilk and Coples will both have solid years...
I think a better question to ask is who will have the better rookie year? Mo Wilk or Coples? We've seen what Mo Wilk can do he can disrupt the offensive line stop the run and he's very good at getting tackles for losses. Can Coples open up the pass-rush for others consistency? Will he show the ability to help set the edge and stop the run? And finally can he, himself get to the QB? I think Coples mid-season will allow our linebackers and Mo Wilk to get sacks and create turnover opportunities (Our D would be Godly if we could only send 4 or 5 at the QB and drop the rest in coverage) Also, Sacks are nice, but at the end of the day its about getting off the field on third down - This is something the Jets defense HAS to get better at, we can look at the statistics and see that the Jets got off the field on 3rd down at a decent rate, but in crucial moments we couldn't get off the field -That has to change first and foremost, if were going to take that step back (or err forward?) into the 2009 form, but hell we could end up being better. We wouldn't have the send the house anymore. I think Coples will have the better rookie year, because he will help make the defense better in general given the talent we have now on defense.
interesting read here too long to post thou http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/04/28/comparing-quinton-coples-with-jason-pierre-paul/
Great question. Wilk is poised for a breakout year. He had a very solid rookie season and I expect him to take a major step forward this year. Coples has the physical tools to make some attention grabbing plays right out of the gate. But you have to think it will take him at least a year to really get his consistency up. I think Wilk will have the better, more consistent year, with above average play across the board, while Coples will be a little more up and down. Coples will make more impact plays but he'll get beat more often than Wilk.
I don't know about Coples being the better of two. I think Wilk be the better player when it's all done. That's of course based on his rookie season that had no off season. Coples is yet to show if he belongs to the NFL. Ghost had great potential too, but great potential doesn't always translate into great NFL careers. I hope Coples becomes great, but I know Wilk belongs in the NFL.
