Monsanto Pope, a 7th round pick 5 years ago? Who cares? Apparently this is big enough news that it is the headline on the official site. They admit that he was signed for depth, so who cares. He is basically the same size as Reed and Legree, and has never been a starter. Is this our solution to the hole at NT? Surely not, I doubt he will even be on the team come September. IMO, if you're gonna draft a guy for depth that might not even make the team, look for guys with huge speed or strength numbers, then u have something to work with. But I guess they can bring as many guys as they want to camp so.....

Monsanto Pope is a good pickup for a 3-4 end. He's bigger than Reed and while he's similar to Legree, he should provide good depth. Remember, all he has to be able to do is hold at the point of attack. The 3-4 is designed to help the linebackers shine.

Jets | Contract update: M. Pope
    Tue, 28 Mar 2006 08:13:25 -0800

Bill Williamson, of the Denver Post, reports DT Monsanto Pope signed a one-year, $585,000 contract that also included a $40,000 signing bonus with the New York Jets, according to agent Ron Del Duca.
    ---
How can anyone complain about this signing? He's basically making minimum wage and has experience in the 3-4 and 4-3 at multiple positions.

Pope is a "hold the fort "type of player. The Jets have tremedous need for OL and DL help. This won't happen overnight. Pope is relatively cheap and hopefully can play well until a better option comes along.

He did not start for the Broncos last year. He played in two games. He was healthy but was deactivated for the other 14 games because of lack of performance.

    http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/302107

The Sporting News ranked him as the 62nd best DT in free agency. James Reed and Lance Legree were rated much higher. His minimum vet contract and 40K signing bonus was the only offer he had from any team.....

its a good signing. Nothing to get too excited about but at least he will help and will be in the rotation for us.

I think that it was a quality signing that didnt break the bank. You should be happy that this FO is more about getting midlevel FA's and rebuilding through the draft instead of getting high priced FA's.

Your posts have been below average at best as of recently...

First you say we should sign Mike Vanderjagt to play ahead of Mike Nugent...

Now you are trashing the Jets for getting solid CHEAP depth for the defensive line?

You might want to think your posts over before you post 'em...

Jason Fergson was a 7th round pick and was the same size but he has played NT for several years. Give this guy a chance and watch him play before you pass judgment on him.

Its nothing to get excited about, but Pope will add depth and doesnt cost too much.

he started 21 games and played in 48 games.

if you look at his numbers in that little time - especially for a R7 pick - he's decent.

we don't need superstars. we need guys that will perform well in our schemes. Mangini and Co. feel Pope will do that and so I trust them. at this point, how could you not? they're still 0-0.

    cheers

If they can bring as many guys to camp as they want then why are you bitching about this signing? It has no risk and a possiblity for reward. Understand that Mangini is going to rotate 7 or 8 defensive lineman over the course of the game. It's not about having 3 or 4 all pro's. It's about having depth and smart hard working players.

OK, but I meant that he has never been a starter in the sense of a John Abraham or Dewayne Robertson, the guy you expect to be the starter for every game he is healthy for.....

Just because he has started games in his career does not make him a starter. Is Brooks Bollinger a starter because he filled in for Pennington/Fiedler/Testaverde?

14 lbs and 3 inches....same idea though. Does signing him not lead you to believe that they don't see Pouha stepping in and taking a lead role? Sucks for him, and us, because I think alot of people were excited to see what Pouha can do so hopefully he will impress in camp and get alot of playing time....Sione is about 6'3, 325 and this is what we have been looking for, right? Maybe because Mangini said we might switch between 3-4 and 4-3, Puha will play in the 3-4 and Robertson/Pope in the 4-3. This is the second consecutive year that we have tried a stop-gap at DT beside Robinson.....

Well, that *is* how the Pats won those superbowls...with pro-bowlers at every position.

We signed the guy for 500k. A starter last season, with the potential to be a solid player in the NFL and a good backup and the guy complains.

    Just go away.
