The guy is clearly our best player for the past two years. The Jets have the cap room. Why not just seal the deal now?
part of me says we should. lock him up now before he has some monster contract year with this new D, and demands way more money. part of me says let him play, then put the tag on him, then give him the long term deal. thats what i think we are doing. look at most of our deals right now. the big guaranteed money is gone in 2 years. if we tag mo next year, it aligns perfectly with his getting a new deal, and we would have the money for it
Exactly. The cap is structured to support this down the road. Plus we really won't be saving much by signing him now vs later. He'll demand a ton as it is. Why prematurely effect the cap. I like the jets approach. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
very true. the savings wont be more than 1-3 mil a year, probably closer to 1. and it can also go the other way too. maybe he does great this year, but next year under the tag, he under performs. i dont want that by any means, but it would cause him to sign cheaper
It doesn't seem to be what teams do anymore. They wait until all options are off the table and then offer a new deal where they can take it or leave it.
I can see why Bowles might want to wait until he sees how these guys play on the field but if we can identify the players who will leave next year we can trade them now and get something in return for them. We would also know where the holes will be when we draft.
If we tag Mo then we might wind up having to pay him and Sheldon in the same offseason. And knowing our luck, well tag him then he'll hold out until week 10, grudgingly play the last 6 games and then go sign in New England
thats not that big of a deal. with the amount of guaranteed money that comes off, plus the new CBA having the cap rise every year, it shouldnt be a problem
I think bradway is probably right that he's asking for more than he's worth. Otherwise it would be done already.
But what is more than he is worth? He has been a damn good player and extremely loyal under some of the worst team conditions. He is clearly a leader in the lockerroom. I would hate for him to be distracted during this season because of his contract.
He does, but my point is the Jets have the cap room NOW. Doesn't it make sense to at least negotiate an extension?
not even close to worth that. hes a top DL dont get me wrong, but he hasnt gotten to the QB enough yet, and still has some attitude issues to work out (dont forget he can still get frustrated and get tossed from a game. did it last year.) before he can command that kind of money imo
He's been great as far as not bitching about his contract so hopefully that continues. I think he's sceduled to make 6/7 mill this year. So he's not hurting at this point. I think the jets to have to wait because all of the spending they just did and don't forget right after his contract needs to be addressed so does Richardson. It may be an impossible task to keep both of them. I don't know how much money Wilkerson is looking for and Richardson will eventually want. Both are premier players and will probably command huge contracts. I been assuming for the past year or so we're only gonna be able to keep one of them. I hope that's not the case.
Damn good player is one thing; he's not going to be rewarded for being loyal. The NFL doesn't work that way. Without guaranteed contacts, either side will do what it has to do fit business reasons. Mo has been loyal because he's hasn't had much choice. He's still playing under his rookie contract. That's not to say he isn't loyal. Just that when the time comes he will do what he had to do for mor money and security, not out of spite. If the Jets are a contending team and can offer him money, he'll forget pretty quick that he wasn't signed ahead of time.
With what? The Jets no longer have anywhere near the cap space they'll need to lock him up, unless he agrees to a nothing salary this year and all his money in future years. IMO that should have been done at the start of FA, or preferably before, but the way things turned out, we can't complain. We just have to hope that they have assured Mo that he will be well taken care of, shown him respect, and he has accepted that and not gotten PO'd at Mac and the new FO. That said, it's possible that Mo is asking for way more than he's worth, and Mac has realized that the Jets chance of re-signing him at this point in time aren't very good.
