I really don't like the message that Mangini and tannenbaum are sending to their players with their treatment of Pete Kendall. Sooner or later, players are going to learn to stop trusting the team as the give up cash one season and then are not rewarded back the following year. The cold-hearted way the Patriots operate should've ripped the team apart, and it would have, except for the 3 Super Bowls. Tangini has no such collateral, and it may come back to bite them in future player renegotiating. More importantly, it may come back to bite Chad as he drops back to pass. Do the Jets even have a suitable replacement option? Do they think Bender can be the guy? Or Clarke? And how will the loss of Kendall affect Ferguson's protection? I know they were looking at Andruzzi (imagine how that would've worked out if his cancer turned up just a month or two later), but WHAT'S THE PLAN NOW? Eric and Mike have a lot of arrogance...I hope they've got the smarts to back it up. One thing for sure, when it comes to taking your money, the Jets play no favorites -- they steal from their players as fast as they steal from the fans.
Ring or not, you've got to plan for the future. at 34, Kendall is not part of the future. He may be part of the now, but hey, how much is that worth?
What the hell kind of precedence would it set if they paid Kendall just 1 year after he signed extension? On top of that, his extension gave him a raise last year (he made loike $5 million) to make up for his preceeding pay cut in 2005. He's trying to be a media darling, but some key facts are being left out from his side of the table. On top of everything, Bradway was the GM when he took the cut, not Tanny. What happened then is completely unrelated to what happens now. Seriously, if they pay him then every player knows that they just need to sit out until Tanny will give them the raise that they want. It's a terrible way to do business.
The message Tangini is sending is the right message. If they give Kendall a raise what happens when all the other players start asking for raises? They should give into them too? Signing old players to higher contracts....Hmm... thats a good idea. Ask Bradway and Herm how that worked out for them. By the way Kendall was given more money last year so he could take less this year.
Football is a business. Players know that. Kendall knows that. That's why he is requesting a release or trade. He knows the Jets aren't going to pay him when the likely result would be a half dozen more players showing up with hat in hand and asking for more money. Personally I think the Jets should find a team in the NFC and get a future pick for him. Then they can try to figure out what to do as a replacement. Do they have a real option in camp now? Do they trade McCareins for another future pick and then try to leverage the Kendall/McCareins value into an offer for Justin Smiley? There are a lot of options right now and I'm pretty sure Tannenbaum is looking at all possibilities.
First of all, the regime that asked Kendall to take a pay cut is no longer here. That alone, should be understood by Kendall and the rest of the team. Secondly, he is a rapidly depleting player, who is overpaid right NOW, nevermind w/ this potential raise.
I'm pretty sure it was Tannenbaum and Mangini who good-cop/bad-copped him into the restructure last year. As to the previous regime not being here: well that would be Bradway and Tannenbaum and they're both still here.
After reading these articles the past 2 days, I swear I thought I was just imagining that because I don't understand how Kendall can't get that through his skull. The paycut has absolutely nothing to do with this regime.
The message coming from our FO is 100% correct. We pay when you play. We don't overpay for mediocrity (Kendall) but do pay for guys that go above and beyond the call of duty, working hard to improve themselves and the team (Cotchery & Thomas). Do you honestly think that we would be better off caving to the demands of a ranting Nancy who hails from Boston? Once you give in to Kendall which mediocre player is next to rant? The FO has taken the right stance, as appearing soft would serve to compromise their standing with the players.
He stated that it was after the 05 Atlanta game(Which mightve been his worst game as a jet). Now, yes Tannenbaum was a member of that regime, but asking for a pay cut sounds like the work of a GM, and I consider herm/Bradway and Tangini 2 VERY different things.
kendall made 5 mil last year...what did he give up? hes under contract...one he signed....for 1.7 this year. he didnt give up anything......if anything he was slightly overpaid (positionally) last year. the market blew up this offseason and now guys on his level are making boatloads of cash....thats whats in his craw....its not what he is making, its what he could be making.
You are kidding right Why!! should he have his contract renegotiated. He had one year with a weak schedule he has not proven anything.
I totally agree with Kowie. Can not set a precedent here, plus this is not the Patriot way, its how most teams run the business. I bet Herm and Bradway would upgrade his pay. ENOUGH SAID!!!
If they cave to Kendall now what are they going to do when it is time to pay Rhodes and Vilma? He is a needed part to that O-line but the team has to do what is best to insure the future as well.
In actuality, Kendall got a BONUS last year to give up cash this year. He's far from getting screwed.
Jets will not cave in to kendall. He's the perfect player to make an example of. Kendall "seems important" (and he was in past years) but at this point, he is expendable and the jets know it. Jets will trade or waive him just prior to traning camp. Kendall will not be on the roster opening day. Example being: "anyone else care to run their mouths?"
