Culver's performance as a 17-year-old would look so much more impressive if it weren't for Sanchez and Flores completely tearing it up.

I predict, at most, 1 of these guys ever makes any impact on the team(discounting being traded for a vet)

montero is almost a lock to do what you just said. possibly this year. maybe if you knew anything about any one of these prospects you could make a better judgement.

Why should you discount being traded?

If the Yankees had traded Montero for Cliff Lee, for example, wouldn't that have made quite an impact on the team?

Exactly. The point of developing a strong farm system is two-fold:

    1. You increase the chance of promoting a player who can help the team directly. Having cost-controlled players is always a good thing, even for teams with (nearly) limitless resources like the Yanks. Saving money on a fifth starter, second baseman, left fielder, and various bullpen guys allows them to spend even more elsewhere.

    2. You increase the chance that you'll be able to trade your chips for a position of need. It's why no one thinks it's a bad thing that the Yanks have three very good prospects at the catcher position. Obviously they can't all play catcher for the big club. But a top catching prospect can get you quite a bit at another position where there is a need.

A lot of these deals have been done for a while, but Selig waits until the last minute to okay them as some sort of "punishment" for going overslot. Really a pathetic move, costing these young kids valuable instructional time, especially when everyone is playing by the rules.

The Yankees took a lot of raw, high ceiling HS players in this draft, and it looks like that's becoming the trend for them. It's about time.

How far they are from the big leagues is almost irrelevant.

It's a prospect thread. They are prospects. They play baseball. This is the baseball forum. Why shouldn't we talk about them?

Besides, guys who tear up low A and GCL ball usually don't stay there for long. We're not talking about prospects who are doing kinda-sorta okay in the GCL here.

If you're interested in prospects, Riveraveblues' nightly rundown of the Yankees minor league action is a great resource.

I'm sure you all read this by now but just in case you missed it and there is a thread to post it in...

Yankees catcher prospect J.R. Murphy had nine RBI for Class A Charleston in a game against Hickory on Friday night.

Yankees sign draft pick Evan Rutckyl.

    http://riveraveblues.com/2010/08/yankees-reach-deal-with-16th-rounder-evan-rutckyj-33903/

Big lefty from Canada who used to be a hockey player. Even if he doesn't reach his potential on the mound, he'd be useful if the benches clear.

Yankees are still waiting on 4th round pick Mason Williams. Sources are still optimistic he'll sign. Not so much with picks Martin Viramontes and Josh Dezse. High ceiling picks Kevin Jacob and Kevin Jordan have about a 2% chance of signing.

Boston signed their sandwich first rounder Anthony Ranaudo for 2.55M. Sox really opened up their wallets and came away with a major haul.
