It's been said in this thread, but I will reiterate. Every year we get these 'next season's free agents' list and every year that list is halved by teams re-signing them before the season even ends. It's nice to fantasize about how different players would fit into our schemes, but in the end they usually amount to fantasies. Ty Law was such a curse. He will addle the minds of many Jets fans with hopes that we can just go out and grab any marquee FA that might or might not be available the next season.
i would take a shot at m,lewis for safty next to rhodes would be sick briggs for one of the linebackers and l,davis for either a guard spot or RT then draft for other spots
There could also be a list of players who will never see the light of day from that list. Here are a few Schaub Tiki Turner Freeney Briggs
ALOT of those guys will be resigned, franchised, etc...... but one that will most likely slip away and could help the JETS is TE Eric Johnson.
Barber might retire after the season. If not, he'll retire after 2007. He's 31 years old and will get a tv job days after he retires from playing football.
Looks like we'll have to address DT in the draft. Pretty unimpressive free agency for defensive line in general (excluding Freeney, b/c he WILL be resigned by the colts)
Asante Samuel will be a jet, he is a patriot now i believe. Also I think the Jets should go all out for "The Burner" Turner for RB, also just throwing it out there, could you imagine if the Jets got Freeney (Hes staying in indy though) If the Jets picked up Turner in FA then they need to go after either a very good LB or NT in the draft, if they do that this team could be on the fast track to contenders
1. I do not believe in "building through free agency" scheme, nor I endorse it. Before anything, this is a "proven" fact: if you build your team through free-agency, your team is bound to perennial 8-8 franchise, nothing more. 2. With that in mind, if the team is "close" to contending for the big one (superbowl?), getting a marquee free agent is not such a bad idea - it's all about balance between time and salary cap structure. Whichever is closer, you go for the shorter one. 3. I do not believe this team has what it takes to go for the big one just as of yet - maybe two drafts away, but not before. I originally expected this rebuilding to be more than 4 season's worth of work - getting rid of the excess baggages, bringing in the new personnel, installing new schemes, whatever. They all take their time and rushing won't help the cause either. 4. Thus, I think drooling on all these free agents is as good as wet dream, and is not all that constructive. 5. The team still needs serious help at the trench: DT/OG/RT. That is 4 spots to say the least. Of course I do not think the team should invest high round picks on OGs, but DT and RT are seriously hurting as anybody can see. I think the presence of true NT will make other DTs look a lot better. Also, keep in mind that having fearsome presence at the trench makes just about everybody at least a notch better, if not more. (Look at Denver's O-Line - they can make Plummer look like a HoF QB at times, for all I can tell you.) Thus, I think that this team should reinforce the trenches through this draft as well. I don't know - if they can get Eric Steinbach at an affordable price, maybe it will accelerate the rebuilding process to a degree, but then I don't believe he will come at affordable price anyway. 6. Asante Samuel won't be a necessity, if the front seven can generate enough pressure. The secondaries got burned not really because they sucked that bad, but because the QBs had all day to pick the defense apart. Again, it goes back to the trenches. Once the trench is fixed, then LB corps should be fixed. Secondaries are (IMHO) the strongest suit of this defense, not the weakest. Ok, enough yapping. So what was it that I wanted to say? Maybe Eric Steinbach is the only sensible choice, if there was such a choice. Anything else is not as essential.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Barber already has a deal in place. That being said, I can see him playing until his mid-30s, he reminds me of Marcus Allen. Barber doesn't have as much wear and tear as other RBs since he didn't become a full time starter until just a few years ago. His running style also keeps him from taking many direct hits. He can easily go until 33-34, at the least.
