The Titans were able to drive on the Steelers. When it came down to being close to the 2 minute warning, the Steelers D stepped up and got a 3 and out. That was big. It give them enough time to put another drive together and pretty much end the game, until Ward fumbled. I don't have a doubt in my mind, had the Titans won the coin toss, the Steelers would've drawn another 3 and out on them. Some teams can do it, other can't. Defense is a part of that team. The offense relies on them to make plays on the field and give them a chance to win the game. That chance isn't handed out. It's earned. That's the way I look at it.
I'll let u guys get the last word in. I'm headed to bed and will re-join the discussion tomorrow. Goddamn workie. G'night fuckers.
Nope. A bad rationale for a bad system. The Steelers also should have taken care of business in regulation. I don't like a coin toss giving that kind of advantage. I'm not a big fan of the college system either, but anything beats this. I like the split the overtime pizza idea. Each team bids on where they start with the ball until the other team says "Do it." Another option is the first team to six points wins. Better yet, simply make it a tie with no overtime in the regular season and save OT for the playoffs.
We discussed that somewhere in this thread. Changing to that system is silly. As an example, Team A wins the coin toss, returns the kickoff 25 yards, and scores a TD on its third play from scrimmage. Game over. Team B never touched the ball because Team A, while on offense, scored six points and by rule the game ended. Now, the first to score six points with each team having had one possession is a bit different. There still would be a problem. Team A possesses the ball first and drives for a TD. They successfully convert the XP. Team B then gets the ball and does the same thing. Now we are back to where we started when overtime began!!! What do we do now? Team A gets the ball back and drives into field goal range, successfully kicks a 45-yarder, and wins the game. Complaint after the game- "Team A won the overtime coin toss and won the game because they had one extra possession." First team to 8 or 10 points might be worth looking at. However, players and networks (and some fans such as myself) don't want to see these games go on and on and on. I'm okay with the NFL overtime rules. Could kickoffs and field goals be eliminated from overtime periods? This could work. The first team to possess the ball would start at its own 20-yard line. Overtime games could only end on touchdowns or safeties. Still, I'd rather it stay the same. Keep the kicking game in play, first score ends it, and let people complain about coin tosses. Those Dave Williams (Thnksgvng '80) and Chad Morton (Kickoff Weekend '02) game-ending OT kickoff returns were great.
