Let me understand the premise by some of you here? If Hill looks really good in OTAs, mini camp and training camp it really means nothing. Got it. I buy the fact we should wait and see what he does when it counts. I wonder however, if the same would apply had he dropped a few balls instead. Would every one say....it means nothing, wait till it counts. Highly doubt it. Like it or not most of the 52 starters will be selected based on their performance in training camp and preseason, so I for one would be very happy to see him outperform everyone's expectations every chance he has. It's what's best for the Jets. I won't be laying down the welcome mat for him but sure as hell won't be unhappy to hear about good performance. I'll wait to rip him if and when his lack of performance deserves it. Or better still, cheer him on as he scores during the season.
I like your optimism, but I think people are skeptical because we have all seen guys say they've turned or a corner, or are improving, or have improved and then it doesn't translate to on the field improvements. I understand the skepticism about OTAs in June. I would also say good vs bad is not equiavlanet in this scenario. This is not a game scenario, I hope everyone looks good. It's like the basic steps that the players need to do well. If Hill then translates the improvement to TC then preseason then the regular season. Boom, there we go.
Hill has looked really good in the off-season before. You apparently are ignoring that. What he hasn't done is look really good when we are in position to win games. That's what people mean when they say "when it matters". I'm also sure that many of those people would drink crow piss if he turned out to be a decent receiver. Stop justifying the hope for a shitty player. He has done very little to deserve a roster spot at this point. And maybe he shocks the world, which I am hoping for. People are expressing their frustration about his past play. You are making an argument for his possible future play. Only one of those has a rational basis for belief.
Ok let me say this, I've been really critical of Hill. I hated the pick, I've been bitching about Alshon Jeffrey for so long now. That NE drop is ingrained in my brain, that's one of the worst Jets moments ever. But really we have to be patient with Hill. He only had like 15 catches in college, so raw. Yes this is why I hated the pick but that argument is in the past now. I think the big problem here is the casual fans perspective. You may not notice or understand the measurables just from watching him on the TV. Hill is an absolute physical beast. He is of Megaton ability. If he ever learns to catch, that's the type of receiver he would be. It's really in the teams interest to be patient and give him every possible shot. I really don't want to see him be a TC cut. Cut it with the negativity, we should be rooting for this guy.
You can root for the guy in preseason. There comes a time where reason trumps hope. That time came early last season, and it will come even sooner this season unless he shows up.
I'm not ignoring that fact, I accept he needs to show it when it counts, although his so called dismal performance last year was a bit exaggerated. I still blame management as much as I blame Hill. We expected way too much out of that kid way too soon. He was not NFL ready. To add insult to injury last years offensive performance by the rookie QB and the total receiving game was a bit of a cluster fuck. Hill certainly was not mature or good enough to be the go to guy and make Geno look good, no one probably was. But this is a new year with better weapons offensively, he needs to shine no doubt, ,and to his advantage he will not have the pressure of being the #1 target . But putting all of that aside, the fact that he is looking good this early is still a plus not a minus. We will know soon enough Hill's future with the Jets, if any, but as you put it, for the Jets sake, ....I certainly hope there is enough crow piss to go around when the season starts.
I'm glad we face them first.. Good tune up game. Just like when colleges like Florida St. or something schedule some slap dick div II school like Savannah St. Or something week 1 to kick the shit out of and gain confidence to start the season. That's what playing the Raiders at home week 1 is the equivalent of.
i bet they're saying the same thing of us right now. they're wrong, I think the jets match up better overall, but they're probably still saying it.
Clearly Hill has been inconsistent, at best, since he's been drafted. If he looks good on OTA's, that's awesome, every Jet fan should be happy. That doesn't mean we should assume that he has turned the corner, but nor should we assume that since he has been mostly crappy in the past he will be crappy again. He will get his chance to perform on the field during live action, and that's when we should be judging him. I think everyone realizes that this is a make or break year for Hill, and that his performance on the field will determine whether or not he will be a Jet in the future. At this point in the season, we as fans should just be hoping that nobody gets hurt and off-field distractions are kept to a minimum. Any flashes of brilliance are just a bonus, and should be taken with a grain of salt.
This will be Cimni's first tweet after every practice this entire summer, just like it was the past two summers. He would like nothing better than a QB controversy, even if he makes one himself.
Not to defend Cimini, but this is three years running that we've invited bored beat writers to invent a QB controversy. Nobody was rushing to tweet Brunell's minicamp stats...
I for one don't have a problem with these tweets and wish fans would stop whining like this. -Don't you want to know how the QBs look in practice? -It's inventing a controversy now for a media guy to report to the fans how the players in the most important position on the field are looking in practice? -You really think he should ignore that the team he is covering has 2 guys competing for the QB position because he might create a controversy??? -Cimini is creating a controversy by just reporting how the QBs look in practice, but the general manager isn't creating one by signing Michael Vick to compete with his young QB? come on now. I don't like Cimini much either but this is dumb. I want to know how the QBs are looking in practice. He's doing his job in this case.
What's interesting is Costello had different stats for both QBs yesterday. He had Geno with better numbers than Cimini had and Vick with worse numbers than Cimini. Would you be shocked at all if Cimini was lying to drum up interest in a QB battle that doesn't exist? Cimini conveniently left out another sack for a Vick and an INT.
