With last night's win, the Yanks have now flipped places with the Cubs for the best run differential in MLB at +117. That's almost 100 runs more than the Blue Jay's differential (+21) and yet the Jays are two games up. Can that be explained by anything other than bad luck and/or poor managing? There really should be no way the Jays can hold off the Yankees over an entire season.
Yesterday’s game is a good example as to why that’s misleading though. Winning 11-0 counts the same as winning 1-0. It’s nice for the fans in attendance to pour runs on in the 8th against mop up pitchers and all but it skews the stats. I don’t feel like searching for it but it’d be interesting to see how many blowouts they have like that versus other teams and what their close game record is against a team like the Tigers. Closer games require good fielding and a good bullpen which the Yanks have not yielded up until this point. Maybe the DJ DFA and Jazz back to second thing will help that along. Volpe’s also been garbage in the field so that doesn’t help. The Yankees have to be the best team in league history at hitting meaningless late homers. That’s been a trend since A-Rod got here and he passed the strength on to Judge and friends.
