did you miss what 3rd said?

Chad makes it very difficult to call pass plays outside the 5 because he risks throwing a pick every time.

The jets have tried all year to run it on 1st and 2nd down and sometimes on all 3(see the Infamous 4th and G from the 3 possession against Indy). The running game has been putrid overall and even worse down there. Every QB would have problems in the RZ w/ no reliable running game. I never remember Chad struggling in the RZ when we had Curtis and Lamont.

By the way, it's never a good sign when Champ agrees w/ you.

Considering he has 2 in his career I don't know how he risks an INT every time he throws.

and they both came this year; there should have been about four because i remember two more being dropped.

everytime he drops back inside the 10, i hold my breath because it may be 6 for us or no points at all.

    cheers

Chad is even more limited by his arm strength then he was in 04, and much more limited then he was in 02/03. Like I said, it's the chicken and the egg, you could make the same argument that if the Jets had a great passing game with a QB spreading the field and the defense the running game would be much more successful. The fact is neither the running game or passing game is very good in the RZ and that's a big problem.

I've got to disagree with you here. Down by the Endzone you have to be able to zip it into your reciever--you can't just throw a normal ball in and try to thread it to the right place, because 99% of the time someone will not be open enough. The Baker play is great when the D bites. But when anything else is called, it doesn't look good.

    couple things here....

a temas effectiveness inside the 20 is a function of many variables, much like the game itself, but they are magnified on a short field.

the main things going AGAINST the jets inside the 20 are no running game, no 6-5 receiver, only one pass catching TE threat, and relative lack of mobility at the QB position.

it is very hard for a team to compensate for these things and they must try to out scheme and flat out execute flawlessly to be successful.

i am a big darksider on CP's arm strength but that really doesn't factor in much near the goal line. its the lack of mobility but even this is way down on the list.

The BIG things are the lack of power running game and big receiver.

By the way we weren't bad in the RZ this year, we had problems late but won all 3 those games. Through the 1st 13 games we were 56%, in the last 3 games we were 25% but overall 48%.

but we're not talking about the Goal line only. say we're on the 8 yard line and Chad drops back 2 yards and tries to throw to a WR who's 5 yards deep in the endzone. that's a total of 15 yards.

anyone think Chad can throw a ball effectively, with zip, for 15 yards into a tight spot in the end zone? for the record, i don't.

    cheers

NE has a strong armed QB, right? NE was at 60%, we were at 58% through 13 games.

It's 45% for TDs and there are only 8 teams in the NFL with a worse % then that. Baltimore is the only team of note behind them, the rest are mostly NFC dogs like Det, GB and TB.

That is difficult no matter what your arm strength, yes had can zip it that far w/o question but there are mroe defenders around than usual and by seeting up 3rd and longs from inside the 10 it decreses the chances of TDs. If we had a reliable gorund game that could pick up a few yeards and make it 3rd and G from the 1 or 2 then the % goes up. You can't expect a QB to score alot of Tds from 3rd and G from the 5 and beyond.

so let's change the numbers: at the 4 yard line, drops back 3 yards, throws 5 yards into the endzone. that's still 12 yards and Pennington can't zip it into tight coverage 12 yards with more defenders around; which is why, when he tries, i hold my breath each and every time.

    cheers

He does it all the time in the middle of the field but any QB will have difficulties down near the GL especially in obvious passing downs. His lack of arm strength is blown completely out of proportion.

You have to take each circumstance individually. Who your playing, at what point in the game it is, how your offense and defense are fairing on that Sunday. He took many risks on Defense yesterday, and far less on offense, I think that was the gameplan.

Out of the top 10 Red Zone TD% offenses 5 of them have mediocre to awful running games.

Do those offenses w/ mediocre running games try to run on 1st and 2nd down setting up tough 3rd down conversions? That's what the Jets always do.

Probably not, because all but one of those teams has an excellent QB. You seem to be trying to blame this on the coaching staff junc. They know exactly what they have in Pennington and try to play to his strengths and cover up his weaknesses. It's not the CS' fault for calling runs when they know Pennington isn't going to be able to get it done passing the ball.

which goes back to this point: the Jets may feel they have to run on 1st and 2nd down because they cannot rely on Pennington's arm.

    cheers

We have an excellent QB. Chad was very successful in the past in the RZ and early in the year Chad's arm was as strong as it had ever been, his lost a little zip late in the year but after all the time off that was to be expected.

Pennington is what he is, you have to give him credit that even with his extremely weak arm he can carve up weaker defenses, but he's never going to play a great game against a tough defense. Even in 04 when he was playing with a torn rotator cuff he was able to carve up the lousy Chargers D and then looked totally lost against the Steelers the next week.

It's the same story this year, he murdered bad teams late in the year even if he did "lose a little zip" and struggled against good defenses.
