Your words were "have you ever heard of a qb who's a perpetual student."

Yes, I have. There's the example and source.

Any accuracy your criticisms have is lost in a sea of hyperbolae and grumpy old man.

Good post. That's my take on Smith as well. I do think he had problems reading the D, but most of his INT's without question were late throws.

He also had a lot of late throws over the middle.

Smith defenders keep saying this. The Jets had the sixth ranked running game in the league last year. How is that no offense?

Totally agree with the bold but in comparison to other rookie QBs Geno made a lot more correct reads than incorrect ones. That's a credit to him and MM for keeping for keeping his reads simple. I was very impressed with Geno in that regard and took that as one of the major positives going into this year. The major negatives were his footwork and the talked about anticipation. You can fix the former in an off-season but the latter takes a lot or reps and time; time that I don't know Geno will have playing in this market. The same people that were clamoring for Sanchez's departure while coming to Geno's defense at every turn will be the same ones ready to ship him out. That's what Jets fans are good at.

I was not at all a Sanchez partisan, although I did feel the Jets were unfair to him with the Tebow nonsense. While I do tihnk the Jets hanged on too long with MS, his situation doesn't really have anything to with Smith's, with one important exception. And that is that the Jets have so much difficulty finding and developing a Qb who is decent.

Smith so far does not seem ever likely to bccome an average NFL qb, and that is why I am negative on him. Like you I question whether he can develop along any reasonable time line, but it sounds like we are about to see just how much better he will be in the coming regulat season compared to last year's awful performance. My guess is he will show improvement, but not all that much.

I think it's unfair to be so negative on Smith at the moment. I was negative after last season but he looks much different than last year right now - in camp and in preseason. I have his back. I think he will be much improved this year. He just looks much more fluid and comfortable out there.

Blocker you are too set in your ways. You decided that Smith was bad at one point in time and now no matter what you see you have to shit on him. Just like you decided that the Revis thing was wrong so you continually shit on that situation... It's not about being right or wrong about a guy, people can get better, you can do a 180 on a guy like I have and not look like a fool, and so far I really like what I see in the way of Smith's progress.

Legler I agree that Smith's mistakes last year had a lot to do with anticipation and being behind on throws, but I disagree with the rest of what you say. That is actually something that can be fixed. More NFL experience will slow the game down for him and more comfort with receivers also will allow him to anticipate better. I am encouraged that his problems aren't necessarily in accuracy or arm strength, that can't be fixed or decision making that shows a lack of awareness. I actually believe his problems looked a lot like the problems of many young QBs that struggled at first and turned out to be successful.

Part of anticipation is trust that the wr is going to be where the qb thinks he is going to be. That comes from getting reps together. Something geno didn't have a lot of with last years receivers.

I tend to agree with the latter of this post.

I don't think anticipation is as un-fixable as legler clains. Wouldn't you think that better knowledge of the offense along with more time with the same group of wide receivers lead you to believe Smith will understand the spots that he has to throw?

I'm not ready to anoint him but the guy missed preseason and training camp time last year with his injury as well as had to deal with a rotating door of wide receiver including a cancer like Santonio Holmes. I tend to believe that anticipation comes with consistency of understanding how fast or slow it takes receivers to get into their routes and a whole off season of work helps that immensely.

You could see a lot of this in the Panthers game last night. I'm not comparing them in anyway but you could easily see Cam over and under throwing receivers because the entire receiving corps is new and he's just recently been cleared to play. Not knowing a receivers speed and breaks are pretty important for a quarterback.

Appreciate the civil response. I don't think it can't be fixed. I just don't know if Geno will get the time he needs to fix it. From what I've seen in the preseason games he is still a little late on his throws.

Aboushi played really well with the 1st team; don't know if that has been mentioned enough. Winters better watch out.

It's a situation where you hope they stop with the loyalty bullshit. You know since Winters was a higher draft pick and started last year they "hope" he improves. I hope they go out and give the best guy the starting guard spot rather than leaving Winters in there to develop even if he's an inferior player.

Winters just seems too slow moved side to side and when you get him dropping his left foot he's very susceptible to be bullrushed. Could be poor technique in dropping too deep or it could be a strength problem.

From what I saw Aboushi showed excellent technique in the running game and in the passing games he put those long OT arms to good use. Winters be looking like he wants to sumo wrestle guys out there. They both possess a mean streak with Aboushi a bit more controlled. Definitely liked what I saw from Aboushi. He's made tremendous strides from last preseason; very encouraging signs with regards to how we are developing our own.

Starting to worry about Coples - he lost plenty of first team reps today to Jason Babin (who has been under-whelming). Motivational tactic?

How did I shit on him??? I said I expect improvement, but question how much improvment we will see. That counts as shitting on him????

From where he was last year, I never said it wsa impossible for him to get to a point where he could be an average NFL Qb. I just felt the distance he would have to travel would be too much, that the odds of him making it were not good.

As for Revis I believe history has shown I continue to be right about that. The Jets went from having their best player since Martin, if not before that, tying down one corner and more in a Rex Ryan D that is much better with good Cb's to today, which speaks for itself.

A very good point. Aboushi seems to have more of a tackles body with long arms but if he understands and plays the leverage game as he has shown in the preseason he should get the nod. The only thing he might defer to Winters on is pulling but that's not an overly big deal. To put a big masher next to D'Brick would help out the left side running attack so much.

Yup. Too bad the guy was such a money grubbing asshole his former employer wanted nothing to do with him.
