Where are you getting this NFL from? I have yet to see him mocked outside the top ten and several still have him at number 1.
well written article thx btw of the 2 options he put forth for next year, I can't see Woody going for cleaning house, getting rid of head coach, gm, sanchez, and the rest of the old players and bad contracts. I can see them keeping Ryan and Sanchez and bringing in Norv as offensive coach. I could see them getting rid of Tanny and maybe Bart Scott but thats about it. Everything in the past indicates that they would rather deny their mistakes and keep doubling down on Sanchez and putting on freeagent bandaids to patch the holes.
Don't shoot the messenger, just because you don't like the message. Surprisingly - or not so surprisingly - his message looks a lot like mine too. Coincidence? I don't think so.
Turk, I wrote an article recently pretty much saying most of the same things Barnwell said. Stock draftpicks, get rid of Tanny, Sanchez, keep RR if we can and go get a new GM. We need to dump a lot of these aging players and do a comprehensive rebuild We have a decent core of players on both sides of the ball. Kerley, Powell, Hill, McElroy (backup). Coples, Wilkerson, Davis, Landry (resign), Cro. We can build around these players via the draft. I've also suggested trading Revis and stockpiling picks. We have PLENTY of holes to fill. But absolutely DO NOT want to do anymore trading up with all of the said holes. I like this article A LOT!
Ideal opening day QB situation for next year: 1) journeyman Vet. / McElroy 2) Sanchez (salary cap $$) 3) developmental prospect (if one worthy is available)
he said the Jets would be one of the worst teams in the league if they followed the option of cleaning house. Gotta read the article slowly
Good article. But I think there may be a third option not discussed by Barnwell. I was reading Shipwell's article in the Times this morning. Here's the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/19/s...ure-with-jets-is-less-so.html?ref=sports&_r=0 And here's the interesting part: "Andrew Brandt, who spent 10 seasons negotiating contracts and handling the salary cap for the Green Bay Packers and is now an N.F.L. business analyst for ESPN, said the Jets’ only passable exit strategy would be to trade Sanchez, provided they could find a willing partner, who would then take on his salary. "Brandt suggested that the Jets could theoretically convert a portion of Sanchez’s 2013 salary to a bonus, which, he said, would make it more palatable for a potential deal. " “It’s a lot of money to sink in a player at any position, and it has to be couched with the understanding that he’s our starter,” said Brandt, who was referring to the new contract Sanchez signed in March that guaranteed him $20.5 million in 2012 and 2013. “If they shift course now, obviously they have to have an alternative. They have to talk about sunk costs and whether ownership’s willing to move on.” " So, the key concepts include converting a big enough chunk of Sanchez's contract to a bonus to make his contract tradeable, then to trade him, and to understand the reason to do this is to view the current contract obligation to Sanchez as a sunk cost. That money's already been wasted, in other words, and the object going forward should be to both get him out of town and minimize the cap hit in doing so. In short, I think there may be a third way.
MS comes across on the TV screen as a non caring QB who does not care if we win or lose so U R totally correct that if he is the starter in 2013 the fans will be over him something akin to mustard on the hot dog. JMHO
Yes. But it would almost certainly also require some alteration of Muck's contract price to make him attractive enough to get someone to take him.
And then what do you do when #1 goes down of turns out to be incapable? Put in the backup nobody wants to see on the field again? When the starter is going bad everybody is chanting for the backup. In this case they'd be chanting to keep the starter on the field. Toxic is toxic. You can't put Sanchez on the field again in MetLife. You can't even risk having to put him on the field. He's worn out his welcome there. Fireman Ed retired because he was afraid he was going to get assaulted for wearing a #6 jersey. That's crazy stuff.
the jets could probably keep their defense as-is, totally clean house on offense, still have some money left over and win 8 games next year. just with the solid defense.
I still don't think that makes us one of the worst teams. Heck, look at the league. We're still a lot better than: Cardinals Jaguars Chiefs Raiders Bills Browns Rams Eagles Lions Panthers That's 10 teams. "One of the worst" is bottom 5. In any case, if we get rid of Sanchez and go back to a decent game manager, I actually think we improve and have a decent shot at the playoffs next year. Think about it. Defense is getting back Revis. Mo, Ellis and Coples have another year under their belt. Pouha will be coming back from injury. Davis should start stepping it up. So I actually think the D improves, especially against the run. Draft a linebacker and a safety and we're good. Offense is huge addition by subtraction. Take away even half of Sanchez's 24 takeaways this season and we probably win 3 more games. Draft a right tackle and a guard, and we can be that ground and pound team that Rex has wanted. Barnwell is gonig to hate the Jets because he's been hating them for a while now. Don't let his "objective" analysis fool you. He wants this team to fail and is engaging in schadenfreude.
If Jets intend to spike and still come out with decent record, this year (2013) is the year to do it. I am all for dumping aging vets that are eating up the cap with monstrous salary figures, and even shipping Revis for more picks. If anything, Jets must do something with Harris - they must either lower his cap figure by half (he ain't worth 6M either, but for now that will suffice) or ship him off to somewhere else. If Ryan is the defensive guru that he claims he is (and I trust him indeed) then he shouldn't have too much trouble concocting plays for rookie LBs either. Just, Jets need to get bigger, faster and smarter at LB position all over. With emerging DL and bedrock of the secondaries, young LBs would do well for years beyond. If they are shooting for respectability soon, then they might throw the LBs into the pitch as soon as they can so the young LBs can gain valuable experience quickly. If they retain Landry, then they only have to worry about FS spot come draft day. That's not too bad position to be in, actually. (Of course Landry has to be in reasonable range, probably around 5M or so.) ------------------------------------------------------------- Also, Jets must dump Santonio Holmes. He SUCKS. His performance does not justify his salary. (He and Nacho must get dumped altogether.) In terms of the WRs, I think Braylon Edwards and Stephen Hill just might work better than either one of them with Santonio Holmes. (That was the WR set-up when Sparano called the plays in Dallas - Glenn/TO) Fasano is coming out as UFA this season - Jets might do very well to take a look. If Keller walks (which I have no problem with - he can't block.) then it would have to be Fasano/Cumberland. I am all for good 2 TEs that can block for any type of short-passing, run-oriented ball control offense. GMac may do well with that. After that... fixing up the OL might do it for this off season. (Again, I still think Mangold and Ferguson need to restructure the contract and lower their respective salary figures.)
I think he's overrating how bad things are. The Jets lost one of the top five overall players in football and its main offensive weapon for the season, plus it's second option for most of the season (Keller), and they still have a decent shot to finish 7-9/8-8. The one game everyone was healthy, they destroyed the Bills. I still think that this team, as constructed, can be a Super Bowl contender with an upgrade at the QB position. Whether that comes through the draft or a trade, I don't know. But the defense should still be very good next year, though they'll need to find a new linebacker or two. But as has been said the D-Line is getting better and better, the secondary will be the best in the league. Offensively, Holmes/Edwards/Kerley/Hill/Keller is not a bad receiving core, and Greene/Powell can be a decent RB combo with a better offensive line. So if they can find a new LG/RT in free agency, draft a couple of young linebackers (one a pass-rusher), and hopefully trade for an upgrade at QB (Rivers? A Smith? Vick? Flynn?) then I think they can be a contender again. They're not that far away. I don't think they need to go and blow it all up.
Norv fixes this. Sanchez,Keller,Cumberland,Edwards,Hill,Holmes,Kerley in the slot, is a pretty good cast to work with. Sanchez is taking too much of the blame for a hands team riddled with injuries and another misguided OC. He's throwing to Clyde Gates, and Mardy effing Gilyard....guys that probably would have a 50 pct chance of starting on my kids HS team.
Let's call it like it is. With Rex Ryan as the Head Coach, the OC is the assistant Head Coach and just as important, if not more important.
