Sounds like a win/win proposition to me. I wonder if that's a sidebar to the dinner date that's coming up.
The fans and media ran Schitty out of town, if they come back with Sanchez as the starter and no real competition to back him up then I see the same thing happening with him next year. The fans are looking for blood and the media has always disliked the Jets and will continue to pile on all spring. Johnson is smart enough to know that and could really face a backlash at the gate. The Giants were smart enough to make people buy PSLs up top, I'm sure the Jets wish they had too.
We talk about upgrading WR but watching the PAts last night how many times did they actually throw to a wide out? I remember once Wes Welker is in the slot. The PATS are a dink and dunk team but have one of the best offensives in the NFL.
Precisely why I'm worried over what the "splash" is going to be Don. It would be good PR for Woody to make a run at Peyton but failing in that, what are his other high profile options..?
I agree and there is no guarantee at all that they can get Flynn to come here either. They could draft another QB but I don't trust Tannenbaum's picks lately. Revis was the last good high level pick he made.
0% chance with the Jets, too. In order to afford Manning, the Jets have to gut their team. He's NOT going to play for the vet minimum. Ummm ... not exactly. The Jests blew two opportunities in a row to play in the Super Bowl, so they didn't come close to "a Superbowl title"[sic]. The Jets didn't even make the playoffs this season, choking down the stretch against teams that didn't even have winning records. The lottery the Gants won was hiring Tom Coughlin when he was down and out. He's easily 10x the coach that Rex Ryan is, and he's got the rings to prove it. You can bet he'd know what the heck was going on his team's locker room.
This post is so uninformed that it almost doesn't need to be responded to Just as their are remarkable similarities between Eli year 3 and Sanchez year 3, there are also remarkable similarities between Coughlin yr 3 and Rex yr 3 By year 3, Coughlin had a AFCCG appearance under his belt and a Div Championship(1st rd play-off loss) Coughlin ultimately had a second AFCCG appearance and a 14-2 season, followed by 3 losing seasons in a row in Jax, where he supposedly lost the team. Same comment trailed him to his first 3 years w/Giants and his problems w/the players, including hints that he didn't know what was going on in locker room, are well-documented So how, other than by virtue of your fine eye for evaluating NFL coaches, do you asses him to be "10X" the coach Rex is, especially after Rex's third year in
then what do you think the jets look like? the jets are the biggest laughing stock in the nfl at the moment. manning would consider the phins and cards long before the jets.
It just may come down to a matter of perception when it comes to where Peyton chooses to finish his career. If the Jets don't change the noise around this franchise PDQ, its gonna hamper their FA signings as nobody wants to be a part of a franchise that appears to be in disarray even if it's not. Especially if money isn't the only driving factor in the decision of where to sign.
Imo this will not be a good year for getting any FA to come to the Jets if they have reasonable options elsewhere. The turmoil is not merely noise but legitimate questions about Mark Sanchez and whether he is the right Qb to move the team forward. An FA on the outside can see enough to understand there is turmoil and what it is about, but can hardly see enough to conclude that Sanchez is in fact going to take his game up another couple of notches. And if you don't think it clear that he will, why take the chance he won't? Of course I suppose FA's who the Jets will overpay for, or who don't care about winning, or who can't get a decent deal from anyone else, those kinds may be available. But why would the Jets want them? The exception ftr would be Edwards, since I think he thinks not only that he fits in well with the Jets but has a big enough ego that he thinks he can come back and save them. Pouha also is likely to come back. But the big picture is, in all irony considering the suggestion that Woody should do something big in FA, is that this is probably the worst year for trying that in some time for the Jets.
Peyton is 36 years old! 4-5 years?! Who is he, Steve DeBerg? Even if he is healthy, which is fleeting for a late 30's QB, I'd say he MAYBE has 2 years left.
Coughlin had problems in TB and was axed. That was where he was down and out since he was out of football in 2003. The Giants took a chance on him. Coughlin is a disciplarian. He dealt with Tiki Barber mouthing off, and he also dealt with other disgruntled vets, including Michael Strahan, who were used to lax discipline from the previous regime. He also developed/managed a very talented QB with some leadership issues into the most clutch player in the NFL this season. FTR, after inheriting a team that went 4-12 in 2003, Coughlin went 6-10 in 2004 with Eli Manning starting as a rookie in the last 7 games over Kurt Warner. Since then, the Gants have had winning seasons every year except 2006 and 2009 when they went 8-8. They have made the playoffs 5 of the last 7 years, won the NFC East three times, and the Super Bowl twice. The Gants played 5 of their 6 playoff games on the way to their SB wins on the road, including butt whipping the Packers at Lambeau. Ryan inherited a team that went 9-7 in 2008. His team backed into the playoffs in 2009 with a 9-7 record when Indy didn't play its starters the entire game. 2010 was a nice 11-5 season but the Jets failed to win the AFC East, and they blew a big lead to lose the AFCCG that you Jets fans are so keen on bragging about. The Jets could have made the playoffs in 2011 but they choked down the stretch, losing to 3 teams without winning records: Denver, Philly, and Miami. Both the offense and defense took steps back. The defense could not make stops late in games. The offense couldn't make plays except against crap defenses like the Bills. There was trouble in the locker room that Ryan has admitted not knowing about. Plain and simple, when Coughlin's teams needed to step up, especially to get into the playoffs and to win there, they have. Ryan's teams, not nearly so much.
That's because he basically will. That offense cannot operate without a Deep Threat and Braylon will be cheap, has chemistry with the QB, and actually WANTS to be a NY JET which can't be said for any other future potential FA's upcoming...
Uh.. This thread is called BLESSINGS in disguise, not "lets continue to whine and complain about mark sanchez and rex ryan". Please just can it, with the "rex hasn't won a superbowl in 3 seasons so he sucks" jibberish. Peyton is not coming to NY, please drop that silly pipe dream already. Here are the good things: -Schotty is gone -Rex Ryan learned some valuable lessons -The similarity in the career #s of Eli Manning and Mark Sanchez shows Sanchez could still be great. Given the right system and running game with a line that can protect, Sanchez will excel. -Most importantly we're back to underdog status. I'm so tired of the media having a field day with our team. This will put pressure on the guys and make them hungry again.
