Not a bad deal I'd say, he would've been cut anyway. So now if he doesn't play and ends up injured or whatever, he'll be worth nothing anyway. If it turns out he has a good year and plays alot, we'll get a nice draft pick.
I don't think this is right. I think the cap hit is the same. The salary does not count against our cap either way. The unamortized part of the signing bonus counts either way.
Maybe, but I thought we would get hit harder by cutting him, I think we catch a break for trading him but I am not sure.
What I am saying is the number of plays he is in will be determined more by his play on the field than by the compensation they have to give up. Do you really think they are going to shoot themselves in the foot and not play him and possibly lose some games because they are worried about giving up a 5th rounder or even a 3rd?
Let's say D'Rob has a good year and the Bronco's are in the hunt for a playoff spot. Do you really think Shannahan will be worrying about Robertson's draft compensation or winning the game. Losing Robertson was a + when you consider what his cap number was fot this year. Jets are on the + side here no matter what draft pick they wind up getting.
The unfortunate thing is, there are jet fans that rooted AGAINST D rob from the second he was drafted. A day one starter who solified a a long time problem position...only to be switched into a scheme that he didnt fit...yet he didnt complain ONCE..and played through a bone on bone condition...and all anyone can say is that he's a Bust. Our biggest need in the 03 draft was a DT.....would you have rather had Jonathan Sullivan, William Joseph, or Jimmy Kennedy??
The only benefit from the trade is the potential compensation. I think the Jets may have simply cut Robertson if they couldn't trade him, and the fact they took such a chance on a trade like this shows how desperate they were to get rid.
Robertson was a goner this year. I know there was some interest in Cincy, but that deal fell apart and I don't think any other team expressed interest in him. We should just be glad he's gone.
It's exactly the same hit, unless you cut him after June 1, in which case the hit is spread over the following 2 seasons.
We were going to cut him, that was obvious. I'm sure the Jets could have either gotten a 6th or 7th round pick, but they chose to roll the dice and hope Denver needs Robertson enough to play him a lot. It's definitely possible, DRob got a lot of time here, and he's been durable despite his knee.
We were going to cut him and get nothing anyway, so why not try to atleast get something, even a 2nd day draft pick
regardless if you trade or cut him, the cap hit = the portion of his signing bonus which has not yet been counted. The SALARY is applied to your cap only if it is a guarenteed contract (few are) and he's cut. With a non-guarenteed contract there is no salary cap hit for the salary for that year for the team that trades him, only for the team he plays for.
