It always comes back to this. Instead, he is firing us by making the team a thing to be hated by it's own fans.
I don't think he is any good, but you took a bad team and let one pro bowl corner walk in the off-season, then traded his pro bowl dt and corner halfway through the season. What did anyone expect?
I am genuinely surprised that AG fired him and there was no leaks. I am glad to see Wilks dismissed, no one cares enough under him and no turnovers forced wtf
Yeah, from the tank perspective you don't want to see any changes now, but I suspect the issues are much deeper than Steve Wilks. There is some risk involved here, but if the defense actually gets worse, maybe there is some small possibility where Woody may realize Wilks was not the biggest problem on the team...
Woody will never sell the team that's for sure. For such a crappy product that trots out on the field weekly/yearly, we're typically on the cusp of top 5 most valuable NFL teams and the franchise still generates close to $200MM in annual NOI.
Yeah, I also thought Wilks was a decent hire because 49ers went to SB under him and had 3d rated defense. It's pretty rare a guy with good defense like that who goes to SB gets fired. So, I assumed they just butted heads. But Shanahan now is a long time HC, and I think I underestimated his involvement in defense. "Shanahan stated that Wilks was a great person but his system simply wasn't the right fit for what the team needed to achieve its long-term goals." So, basically, Shanahan battled with him all year to improve the defense, and succeed, but ultimately let him go. Lesson learned here: when the guy seemingly does well, but gets fired by a very reputable coach, maybe it wasn't him that actually did well, but they did well in spite of him. After all, we don't know the inner workings of the relationship. AG though should have known.
It was bad before the trades, we had 8 of 11 starters going in and they all regressed. The vanilla defense and missed assignments have been all year and it's painfully obvious to anyone that pays attention. Apparently Glenn wasn't paying attention because he apparently decided to wait till we were completely dead in the water to do anything about it. This isn't much of a debate, you will be hard pressed to find anyone anywhere that thinks this wasn't the move.
This is my favorite comment on this thread Borat, apparently he had nothing to do with the defense till the corpse of our season was cold as ice and he is to take no blame for this whatsoever. Please, if he thought he could have fixed it he would have but he wasn't even a great DC himself in Detroit, blind leading the blind.
I think he felt pressured, the media was asking questions about it in the post game Plus I'm sure Woody logged on to this site and saw the official fire Steve wilks thread
Just seems like you're intentionally embarrassing the guy by firing him with three weeks left. He stinks. The team stinks. Then you traded away the two best players. Now you embarrass the guy for no reason; just dumb from a managing-a-team point of view.
I actually agree, I wish they kept him till the end of the year because we needed the losses. I also agree that it's bad management by the HC to embarrass the guy when it should be the HC that's embarrassed for hiring him. It makes management look stupid but I can see them doing it if the reason behind it is to see if the new guy has any chops for the next few weeks to evaluate if he's on the staff next year.
