Highly doubt the NFL doesn't suspend Burress even if he gets a deal in place to do time next year. I believe the rule for these suspensions that are handed down by the League didn't have to necessarily coincide with what happens in a Court of Law. For example. Say a player goes out to a club, and gets into a fist fight with the club owner. Player gets arrested at the time, and released on bail. Club Owner says he doesn't wanna press any charges. I think the League is still able to hand out suspensions depending on the severity of player's actions. In this case, Burress getting all this media attention in an incident that involved a gun and a shooting, won't sit well with the Commish. He knows the young fans read about this, and he will send a message because of it. I'd like for them to give him a 4 game suspension (if he's a Jet) but more than likely 8 because of the media attention it got and the message the League wants to send...not only to other players, but the fans as well.
If he becomes a player for the Jets, I don't think he'll shoot himself by accident again. It'll be planned!
Yeap, we are not talking about Edwards or Bouldin here, we are talking about a WR that took his team to the super bowl. They don't beat the Pack or Pats without him, he's in Moss level and he's not an a-hole like Owens, he's stupid and I get the feeling Ryan can deal with guys like this, just like Tuna dealt with the crack head LT
The NFL will definitely suspend Plax yet as you mentioned it's a question of how many games he'll serve. I honestly think it can't be anymore than 4 games. There's a precedent already in place. Marshawn Lynch recently got suspended for the first 3 games of next year for 2 big fuckups. One was hitting a pedestrian in Buffalo and the other was a gun charge in Cali. If the NFL wants to distribute their punishment equitably then I can't see how Plax can get more than 3 or 4 games max as Lynch is just as guilty for a similar gun charge. He didn't shoot himself but that's not the point. The crime was they were both carrying a gun illegally in NYC and California. You're right on the media attention playing a factor, however I can't see how Goodell could give anymore than 3-4 games max based on recent precedent. That still leaves us with Plax for the majority of the season.
I am not just trying to pick a fight in this case man. I really have a huge problem with everyone justifying away Burress's criminal negligence. This is exactly what he did. Like I said in my previous post. It was just dumb luck that nobody got killed. Whether or not the city goes after it's superstar for breaking this law is another story, but in my eyes, he is already guilty of it. Burress has a history of me-firstness. Someone that selfish really doesn't give a shit about those around him. He was willing to mishandle a gun to the point that is went off in a crowded place with innocent people around. This is not something that should be acceptable to society, but when it's a Super Bowl Hero, the rules change. That doesn't change the fact that he's was criminally negligent. Do I want to have a receiver of his caliber on our team? Fuck yeah! But I am torn on it. And I guarantee you if I had kids, I would not want him anywhere near the team. He is the kind of dude I root against, not for.
What I'm saying is that I believe it's naive to think his legal team will be successful in getting any criminal penalty for Burress delayed until after the 2009 season. Justice may not be swift, but it's also not going to wait until next February just so Plaxico Burress can play football. That's why I don't view it as question -- I don't think there's a chance in hell of it occurring.
What you say makes sense. I just fear that because Burress is in a bigger media market and it was splattered all over ESPN whereas Lynch (to my knowledge) was mentioned once on each account. That's what I think will set the punishment. It doesn't sound right or fair, but I wouldn't be surprised if they hand him 8. Maybe 4 for carrying an unlicensed gun and another 4 for the actual negligence?
Good point on the media thing. I agree that you can never underestimate the power of the media and the court of public opinion. So probably somewhere between a 3 and 8 game suspension barring he's legally allowed to play next year.
You can't compare the Jets right now to the Giants heading in to 2007, they were in two very different situations offensively. My rationale is that bringing in Burress is a win-now move as he is not young (31) and has a history of wearing out his welcome. Couple this with his penchant for breaking the law (see the numerous fines the Giants hit him with, 4 moving violations in Florida last month, and the 7 different law suits he is facing) and you see this is NOT a guy around for the long term. I just don't think he's a necessary risk.
Retarded Millionaire! No thanks. We need someone without baggage and the propensity to say the wrong thing or do the wrong thing that will hurt the team in the long run. I say give what we have a chance and There may be a gem in the rough right here on our roster.
I don't think anybody is really looking to lock him up to 3+ year deal or anything. I think ppl just want to give him a 1-year deal to see if he can still play. Two things can happen. Either he will be average or below average and we'll go 8-8/9-7, and gets cut next season. Or he will be very good like he's shown he can be and fills in nicely as a weapon (even if only for a season) for Sanchez and takes us deep into the Playoffs. I think the rewards outweigh the risk, even if it's for just 1 year.
I think if he gets outta this with minimal consequences he is going to want to move well away from the NY/NJ area! People/Media in other city's will turn a blind eye to his mishap. I think he will be more intrigued with Tampa or Chicago before us. JMO
ok i over simplified it. burress will not be getting in trouble for potentially hurting others with his gun. he will be getting in trouble for having the gun, which was illegal. he might get four games from the nfl, but it won't be because he could have hurt someone.
