The simple fact is that if the Pats lose and the Jets win then the Jets (no matter how bad they have played recently) deserve to make the playoffs. The Jets will have had the best division record of the three 10-6 teams. If the Pats win and the Jets win the Pats deserve to go (best overall record). If the Dolphins win they deserve to go - either by having the best overall record (should the Pats lose) or beating the Pats in one of the next tie-breakers after division records. I don't understand what is so complicated here. The tie-breaking rules are known prior to the beginning of the season and don't change. The tie-breaking rules seem to be logical so what's the problem? It doesn't matter when you play the games and whether you look good at the beginning of the year or the end. The success on the field determines who goes to the playoffs and you don't get any style points ala the NCAA. Nor do you have to worry about polls.
all the teams fighting for the final playoff spots and division titles this week have been imperfect. There was no way I would have thought SB going into the year. I figured 10-6 is pretty good. The defense has not reaaly been good all year, even when we open up big leads the other teams wera them down. It's been frustrating every game except the Rams and Titans.
Its a tough one! While thinking back to every playoff game that I have ever watched and also adding in the new members of this team ; especially Brett Farve. I think we have a good shot at going far if we make it in. Then those old memories of blown leads and inconsistent play come rushing back and I think to myself ...Why? If we make it in we will just be bounced in the first round and have the media reflect on the Jets making it in over better teams...To which I wouldn't be able to disagree. Obviously I want to get in , but we find ourselves in the same position we are in every single year. Ask yourself this question. If it wasn't the Jets who squandered a clear path to the 3rd seed , would you think that team deserved to be in the playoffs?
I can understand the viewpoint of someone that says 'we don't deserve to be in the playoffs'. This season the Jets have done well against tougher opponents and lost to teams that they should have fleeced. They've made mistakes that have cost them an easy division championship at the tail end of the season. Detrimental personnel decisions were made at the defensive back position in the offseason that had us scrambling all season trying to fix. We signed Hank Poteat and Ty Law during the regular season to compensate, instead of just bringing them in during the offseason to become cohesive with the rest of the roster. They put all their eggs in Dwight Lowery's basket and had those eggs smashed against the side of a house. The playcalling has been so inconsistent that I don't even know what team I am watching week to week. This whole 'new scheme every team' philosophy looks like it has been bad for the offense, because they have no identity, no rhythm. Or maybe they are trying to force and identity upon them. One week they go heavy Thomas Jones with Leon getting 4-6 carries and they rock the other team. Other weeks they completely abandon the run, practically ignore Leon, and rely on Favre, who has only been effective this year when we have the running game clicking. Some people argue that fans can't tell what is going on to cause a team to lose a game because they aren't coaches, don't have a pedigree. I don't think you need a pedigree to see the things that went wrong in retrospect. You need to have a coaching pedigree to anticipate those things happening in advance and adjust to them, though. At times this season, I didn't see that pedigree at work. However, should we make the playoffs, it will be because we won enough games in the conference and the division to qualify for the playoffs over the com-petition. I don't believe in the notion of 'backing into the playoffs'. We would qualify as pertaining to NFL rules, just like you win games within the NFL rules.
The playoffs is something you earn by playing well when its on the line. This team has been crap for the last month. They dont deserve it becuase they play like they dont want it
And even if we win...if we win... Ha! Even if we win. Even if we play so far over our heads that our noses bleed for a week to ten days. Even if God in Heaven above comes down and points His hand at our side of the field. Even if everyman woman and child held hands together and prayed for us to win. It just wouldn’t matter because all the really good looking girls would still go out with the guys from Mohawk because they’ve got all the money.
It's not about the division record....that's just a technicality. It's about the team and the fact that they are not in the echelon of teams that should be there. Right now, Miami is doing far more with far less talent-wise. They are better prepared every week and they have an identity that it's OK for teams to know because the Fins are dedicated to executing and know what to do in every situation. They are always prepared and always have a plan, the Jets don't, they got figured out and can't do anything about it. They didn't deserve wins in 2 games they won, Buffalo and KC...it just happened, luckily. So, in reality, we're really lucky to even be in consideration right now.
Just a technicality? Those are the rules the league has had for years. Everyone knows those divisional games are the most important ones to win. So are you saying that if we go 2-0 against the Dolphins and 5-1 in the division that they would be more deserving of playoffs than us because they looked better in December? Are we supposed to throw out September, October and November? This isn't the BCS.
I understand that rules are rules, etc. Let me rephrase......subjectively, they should not be there. There are teams in the NFL that will perform better in the playoffs if given the opportunity because they play better on a consistent basis and would kill the Jets right now if the 2 teams had to go head to head for a playoff spot. There are other teams in the league that, if given a shot, would not get embarrassed the way the Jets surely will if they get a playoff game. It is a technicality. Just because these are the rules, it does not mean that, relative to the rest of the league, the Jets should be where they are. Let's say that hypothetically there was a division with 3 teams at 3-13 and one team at 4-12 and then there was another division in the same conference with one team at 13-3 and one at 12-4, they both make the playoffs, but the 10-6 team in that division who has won 4 in a row to get to 10-6 and had to play the 13-3 and 12-4 team twice each, doesn't make the playoffs. Who would you say deserves the playoff shot more, the 10-6 team or the 4-12 team?
The rules determine who deserves the spot. Not someones opinion on which teams are more likely to succeed in the playoffs. Everyone knows the rules going into the season and knows which games are most important. The teams that win enough of their games and tie-breaker games deserve playoff spots. By your logic, a team that starts the season 0-10 but then wins there last 6 games in dominating fashion is more deserving of a playoff spot than a team that started the season 10-0 and lost the last 6 in dominating fashion.
In a way, yes. I know this isn't how it works. Also, despite my feeling that the Jets don't deserve to be there, the fan in me wants them to play a playoff game this season. I guess I feel that if we make the playoffs, we'll sort of be making it in the same way we won the Buffalo game and to me that's not satisfying.
What are we goona do if we get in? make another unique game plan that doesn't work? were not a good team, all good teams have an identity. we don't have one.
For me, this is what it comes down to. The point is to win the Super Bowl. One and done in the playoffs is nothing. Nothing. It doesn't get me excited to go on the road and get our heads handed to us in a Wild Card game. Whats great about that?
Hi...for those of you who'd like to tell Jets fans that if they make the playoffs it won't matter cause they won't do anything...please move to a Pats or Phins board where you can post with your other fans. Ignoring that 30 teams don't make the fucking Super Bowl either...the whole point of the regular season is to make the playoffs...so now you guys just want us to what...quit? That sounds pretty fuckin gay to me. Seems like some people like bitching more than winning.
You see, that's precisely the point. Going to the playoff for the sake of going to the playoff - gives you the sense of false security. In reality, the team is but mediocre - maybe not borderline 8-8 mediocre, but "not-good-enough-to-get-past-the-first-week-of-the-post-season" mediocre.
